AWS Elemental MediaPackage

AWS Elemental MediaPackage vs OBS for Streaming Prerecorded Videos to YouTube

OBS can play a prerecorded file into YouTube Live directly; MediaPackage is a downstream packaging service that needs an upstream encoder such as MediaLive.

For a straightforward YouTube Live broadcast of a prerecorded video, OBS is the more direct place to start: it can play a media file in a scene and send the stream to YouTube. AWS Elemental MediaPackage is not a file player or encoder. In AWS’s documented live architecture, an upstream encoder such as MediaLive sends a stream to MediaPackage, which packages and originates it for downstream playback.

Choose OBS for a local, single-file broadcast. Consider an AWS pipeline when you need managed cloud encoding and origination or packaged outputs for other playback destinations—not simply because you have an MP4. If you want an uploaded video to keep looping on YouTube without a computer left running, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option; it is not an AWS MediaPackage workflow.

First, distinguish a YouTube Live broadcast from an upload

Streaming a prerecorded file as a live broadcast means sending its playback through a live encoder to YouTube Live. That is different from uploading the file as a normal YouTube video or using a Premiere. The distinction matters because MediaPackage’s live input is an upstream stream, while AWS’s VOD path uses source files stored in S3. AWS documents these as separate workflows in its MediaPackage documentation.

What OBS and MediaPackage do

OBS: play and send the source

OBS is desktop production and streaming software. You can add a media source to a scene, play the file, and configure OBS to send the resulting stream to YouTube. Its official guide explains media sources in scenes. The computer running OBS and its network connection must remain available for the duration of a local broadcast.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

MediaPackage: package and originate a live stream

MediaPackage sits downstream of an encoder. A MediaPackage v2 live channel receives an upstream stream, and an origin endpoint defines packaging settings for playback outputs. In AWS’s described live flow, an encoder such as MediaLive sends HLS to MediaPackage; a player or CDN then requests an endpoint output. MediaPackage’s documented live input types include HLS and CMAF over HTTPS, and its supported inputs and outputs include formats such as HLS and DASH. See AWS’s live-content overview, live processing flow, and supported inputs and outputs.

That makes MediaPackage a poor substitute for OBS when the request is simply “play this local MP4 into YouTube Live.” The AWS live path needs an upstream component to produce and send a live stream; MediaLive is the likely encoder in AWS’s documented architecture.

Which route fits your YouTube broadcast?

Requirement OBS-led route AWS MediaPackage route
Play a prerecorded file as a live scene OBS can add a media source to a scene and send the stream. Validate playback in the OBS version installed. MediaPackage is not the file player or live encoder; an upstream source must send it a stream.
Package a live feed for playback formats such as HLS or DASH Not MediaPackage’s role. MediaLive can encode upstream; MediaPackage can package and originate outputs for players or CDNs.
Send the event to YouTube Use the ingest details shown for the event in YouTube Live Control Room and configure OBS to match. AWS has documented MediaLive workflow options for direct social-platform outputs including YouTube; confirm current support and configuration in AWS and YouTube documentation.
Setup and operations Fewer cloud services for a desktop-only workflow, but a capable host and network are still needed. Requires more AWS configuration and services; the exact design depends on the workflow and region.
Cost No cloud-service costs are specified here; account for the computer and connectivity you use. AWS charges depend on the services, settings, runtime and region. Its RTMPS example says its resources are not covered by Free Tier and incur charges while running; check current regional pricing.

Decision rule: use OBS first when one computer can play and send the file and you do not need cloud-managed packaging. Consider AWS when managed encoding and origination or multiple packaged playback outputs solve a real requirement and justify the additional services.

How to send a prerecorded file through OBS to YouTube Live

Labels and available options can vary by OBS version. YouTube’s current event settings are the authority for ingest details and stream requirements; check its live encoder settings and resolution guidance and the event’s Live Control Room rather than relying on an old copied stream key or a generic preset.

  1. Create or open the YouTube Live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the event. Confirm that the channel can go live and review the event’s current stream URL, key, and ingest protocol details. Keep the key private.
  2. Add the file in OBS. Add a Media Source to a scene and select the prerecorded video. Choose whether it should restart when the source becomes active and whether it should loop; verify the intended behavior in the installed OBS version. Preview playback, audio, duration and aspect ratio before starting.
  3. Set the output to match YouTube. In OBS, open Settings and configure Stream with the service and ingest details supplied for the event. In Output and Video, choose an encoder, resolution, frame rate and bitrate appropriate to the source and YouTube’s current guidance. Use YouTube’s published keyframe interval and other encoder requirements where specified. Avoid upscaling a low-resolution source without a reason, and confirm the resulting stream is within the event’s limits.
  4. Test before the event. Start the stream in OBS and inspect the Live Control Room preview and health indicators before making the event public or announcing playback. Check that picture and sound stay in sync and that the file’s ending and loop behavior are what you intend.
  5. Start and monitor the broadcast. Begin streaming from OBS, then use YouTube’s controls to start or manage the live event as applicable to its setup. Keep OBS, the source file and the network connection running until the broadcast is finished. Stop the stream deliberately when done.

Important limits and operational checks

OBS depends on the local machine

Because OBS is playing and encoding locally, shutting down or sleeping the computer, closing the application, losing access to the media file, or losing connectivity can interrupt the broadcast. A desktop workflow also means monitoring that host during the event.

Do not treat an AWS wizard as a universal MP4 recipe

An AWS MediaLive workflow-wizard article lists RTMP and MP4 among input options and lists MediaPackage origination and social destinations such as YouTube among outputs. Its example uses OBS as an RTMP live camera source, and the article is several years old. It is useful architectural context, not a current end-to-end instruction for sending any local MP4 straight through MediaPackage to YouTube. Review AWS’s workflow-wizard example alongside current service documentation before designing a deployment.

Check rights and YouTube rules

Having a video file does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast its music, footage, or other material. Review YouTube’s current copyright rules and channel policies before streaming. A live presentation of prerecorded material is still subject to applicable rights and platform policies; do not assume that changing the format to a live stream makes reused content permissible.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube receives no signal: confirm OBS is streaming to the event’s current ingest destination, that the key is for that event and copied correctly, and that the network permits the selected protocol. Recheck the event status in Live Control Room.
  • The file does not start or stops early: confirm the media source points to an accessible file and test its playback inside OBS. Check source restart and loop options if the video should repeat.
  • The picture or audio does not match expectations: inspect OBS preview and audio meters, then verify resolution, frame rate, output settings and the source’s aspect ratio against YouTube’s current guidance. Test the complete path before the scheduled broadcast.
  • The broadcast drops when unattended: a local OBS setup requires the host and connection to remain available. If that is not practical, use a cloud-based workflow rather than assuming MediaPackage alone will play and transmit the file.
  • The AWS pipeline cannot ingest the file as expected: separate VOD storage and processing from live ingest. MediaPackage live channels expect an upstream stream; confirm which AWS service is responsible for reading the source, encoding it and delivering to YouTube before provisioning resources.

Or let it run in the cloud

For an uploaded video that should stay live on YouTube without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is the simpler alternative to maintaining an OBS host. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not camera feeds or other platforms.
