awscommonui.dll Won’t Load: Check the Adobe Install First

awscommonui.dll is an Adobe application file, not a Windows component. When Windows says awscommonui.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, identify the older Adobe program that needs it before attempting any repair.

The safest fix is to repair or reinstall that Adobe application from its genuine installer or original installation media. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy it into System32.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing anything, record what Windows is telling you:

  • Which program fails? It may be Acrobat, Photoshop, InDesign, GoLive, PageMaker-related software, or another older Adobe application.
  • When does the error appear? Note whether it happens when opening the program, signing in, opening a document, or after an update.
  • What changed first? Consider an uninstall, cleanup utility, backup restore, antivirus action, Windows upgrade, or Adobe update.
  • Where is the program installed? Right-click its shortcut, select Properties, and check Target. The DLL normally belongs in the same application directory as the executable.
  • Is the application old and 32-bit? Many Adobe products associated with this file are legacy 32-bit programs. A current 64-bit Adobe installer is not necessarily a replacement for an older release.
  • What exact error appears? “Missing” and “not found” usually indicate an absent file. “Not designed to run on Windows,” an entry-point error, or status 0xc000012f usually indicates a mismatched or damaged binary.

If you do not know which application is responsible, do not copy the file anywhere yet. Start the affected programs one at a time and note which executable produces the message.

1. Repair the Adobe application

Repair is the fastest supported fix when the file was deleted, damaged, or omitted during installation.

Repair Acrobat from Control Panel

For an Acrobat installation that still appears in Windows:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Select the Adobe Acrobat entry.
  4. Select Change.
  5. Choose Repair.
  6. Follow the prompts.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Open Acrobat again.

If the error has disappeared, the repair restored the application files or corrected the installation record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If there is no Repair option, or repair fails:

  1. Return to Programs and Features.
  2. Select Adobe Acrobat.
  3. Choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Reinstall from Adobe’s genuine installer or your original installation media.

Do not assume that the newest Acrobat installer will restore a file required by Acrobat 7. Current Acrobat packages may use a different application structure and may not include legacy components.

Repair Creative Suite-era software

Older Photoshop, InDesign, GoLive, and PageMaker-related installations may not provide a modern repair button. Use the original installer or a registered previous-version download associated with your Adobe account.

The general process is:

  1. Open Settings with Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for the affected Adobe application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Uninstall if a repair option is not available.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Run the matching Adobe installer as administrator.
  9. Start the program from its normal shortcut.

For an installer stored in a ZIP file, extract the entire ZIP first. Do not run setup from inside the compressed archive. Right-click the extracted Setup.exe, select Run as administrator, and complete the installation.

If the installer asks for a serial number, use the product’s legitimate serial number. A different Adobe release may install successfully but still provide the wrong DLL or incompatible supporting files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the application folder after repair

After reinstalling, inspect the folder containing the Adobe executable:

  1. Right-click the program shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, read the Target path.
  4. Open that folder in File Explorer.
  5. Look for awscommonui.dll beside the application files.

The exact folder varies by product and release. It is normally an application-directory file, not a file that belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

If the file is present but the error continues, do not replace it immediately. The message may refer to a dependency of awscommonui.dll, or the installed DLL may be the wrong release or architecture.

2. Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can quarantine or remove an application file. A missing DLL does not prove that the file was malicious, and a quarantine entry does not prove that restoring it is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the security product that was active when the problem began:

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review entries from the time the Adobe program stopped working.
  5. Expand any entry referring to the Adobe installation folder or awscommonui.dll.
  6. Confirm that the path belongs to the genuine Adobe application.
  7. Restore the file only when the installation source and path are trusted.
  8. Update the Adobe application afterward and run a full scan.

If the file is restored but disappears again, do not repeatedly restore it. Uninstall the Adobe application, run a full malware scan, and reinstall the program from genuine Adobe media. The reinstall is preferable to keeping a possibly damaged or mismatched copy.

3. Reinstall the exact Adobe release

A common mistake is installing a current Adobe product over an older program and expecting it to supply the old program’s private files. awscommonui.dll is associated with older Adobe software, including releases of Acrobat and Creative Suite-era applications.

Use the same product family and release that created the installation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Acrobat files should come from the matching Acrobat installer.
  • Photoshop files should come from the matching Photoshop release.
  • InDesign files should come from the matching InDesign release.
  • GoLive or PageMaker-related files should come from their own original installation media or supported Adobe account download.

Do not substitute a file from another Adobe product. Two applications can use the same filename while requiring different exports, dependencies, or architectures.

After reinstalling, launch the program from its installed shortcut. If it works there but not from an old shortcut, delete the obsolete shortcut and create a new one from the repaired installation.

4. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Many older Adobe applications are 32-bit. A 32-bit application normally loads its private DLL from its own program directory. Installing a 64-bit runtime or placing a 32-bit application DLL in a Windows system directory will not convert the application into a compatible 64-bit program.

To check the application architecture, use the application’s documentation or installer information. You can also inspect the installation folder and product release details. Do not infer architecture from the fact that Windows itself is 64-bit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical rules are:

  • Keep the DLL beside the executable that needs it.
  • Use the DLL from the same Adobe product and release.
  • Do not use a 64-bit replacement for a 32-bit legacy application.
  • Do not copy a 32-bit application DLL into System32 or SysWOW64.
  • Do not mix files from separate Adobe installations.

If reinstalling produces an error such as “not designed to run on Windows,” the file may be corrupted, the wrong architecture, or dependent on an incompatible library. Treat that as an installation or compatibility problem rather than a simple missing-file problem.

5. Determine whether a dependency is actually missing

The wording “The specified module could not be found” is ambiguous. Windows may be unable to find awscommonui.dll, or it may have found that file but failed to load one of its dependencies.

First, reinstall the Adobe application. That restores the complete set of files and is safer than guessing which runtime is missing.

If the dialog specifically names a Microsoft runtime such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll, install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft. Choose the architecture required by the Adobe application. A 32-bit Adobe program generally needs the x86 package even when Windows is 64-bit.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not install a Visual C++ package merely because awscommonui.dll is missing. The redistributable does not provide this Adobe DLL.

If the application asks for a legacy Windows feature:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures and press Enter.
  3. Review the feature named by the Adobe installer or error.
  4. Enable only the specifically required feature.
  5. Select OK and restart Windows if prompted.

Do not enable unrelated legacy features as a general DLL fix.

6. Do not register this DLL with regsvr32

regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It calls a registration routine used by DLLs designed for COM or similar registration. A normal private application library does not become usable because it was registered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid commands such as:

regsvr32 awscommonui.dll

If you already tried this and received an error, that does not identify the original problem. Return to the Adobe application repair or reinstall steps instead.

Only use regsvr32 when the software’s official instructions explicitly require registration for that particular DLL and provide the correct command. That is not the normal repair path for awscommonui.dll.

7. Test permissions and another Windows profile

A damaged user profile or restricted permissions can prevent an old Adobe application from reading its own files.

First test the program as administrator:

  1. Open the Adobe application’s installation folder.
  2. Right-click its main executable.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open the Compatibility tab.
  5. Select Run this program as an administrator.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.
  7. Start the application.

Use this only as a diagnostic step. If it works only as administrator, the underlying issue may be permissions, an old installer, or the application writing to a protected location.

To test another profile:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Select Other users.
  4. Select Add account.
  5. Follow the prompts to create a local test account.
  6. Sign in to that account.
  7. Start the Adobe application.

If the program works in the new profile, repair the original profile’s permissions or application settings rather than copying DLLs into system folders.

8. Check legacy application compatibility

A repaired file does not guarantee that an old Adobe product can run on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Older applications may depend on obsolete installers, licensing services, drivers, activation systems, or operating-system behavior.

Try Windows compatibility settings only after repairing the Adobe installation:

  1. Right-click the Adobe executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose an older Windows version suggested by the application’s documentation.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.
  7. Start the program.

If the application still fails, check whether Adobe provides a supported replacement. For documents and workflows that can be migrated, a current Adobe product may be safer than continuing to patch an obsolete installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the application requires old hardware drivers, display components, or scanners, identify those separately. Do not install a driver just because a DLL with an Adobe name is missing.

9. Update or reinstall a named driver only when the error identifies one

awscommonui.dll is an Adobe application file, so a graphics or printer driver is not the first suspect. Driver work is relevant only when the Adobe error also names a display, printer, scanner, tablet, or other device component.

To check a device driver:

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category for the named device.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties and read the Device status message.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Select Update Driver.
  8. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  9. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, obtain it from the device manufacturer. Do not use a driver package to replace awscommonui.dll.

If you are manually hunting through many hardware versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies problems, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the Adobe program remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that program.

10. Run DISM and SFC only for wider Windows corruption

Windows system repair commands do not supply third-party Adobe files. Microsoft’s tools repair the Windows component store and protected Windows system files.

Use them when other Windows applications are also failing, Windows reports damaged system files, or updates are malfunctioning. Open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Try the Adobe application again.

Run the commands one at a time. If they report that no integrity violations were found but the Adobe error remains, that result is consistent with an Adobe installation problem. Return to repair or reinstall rather than repeating SFC and DISM.

If you want help interpreting repeated Windows repair failures, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. It is not required for this Adobe DLL, and reinstalling the affected Adobe program remains the definitive fix.

11. Avoid unsafe DLL downloads

Do not download awscommonui.dll from an arbitrary DLL archive. A file with the correct name can still have the wrong Adobe release, wrong architecture, missing dependencies, or an unsafe origin. Manual copying also leaves the damaged installation record and other missing files untouched.

Never:

  • Copy the DLL into System32.
  • Copy it into SysWOW64.
  • Replace it with a file from another Adobe product.
  • Use regsvr32 as a general repair.
  • Disable antivirus protection to force an unknown file into place.
  • Treat a third-party version number as proof that it matches your installation.

Use Adobe’s genuine installer, original installation media, or a legitimate registered previous-version download instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is awscommonui.dll a Windows file?

No. It is an Adobe application component named AWSCommonUI. Windows Update, SFC, and DISM should not be expected to provide it.

Is it related to Amazon Web Services?

No. The AWS prefix is part of Adobe’s historical component naming. It does not identify Amazon Web Services software.

Which Adobe programs use it?

Public installation inventories associate it with older Acrobat, Photoshop CS, InDesign CS, GoLive CS, and PageMaker-related software. The exact files vary by product release, so do not assume every Adobe version contains it.

Should I download the missing file?

No. Restore it through the matching Adobe installer or trusted quarantine recovery. Random downloads can be mismatched or unsafe.

Why is the file not in System32?

It is normally a private application DLL. It should generally be beside the Adobe executable that loads it.

Will installing Visual C++ fix the problem?

Only if the error separately identifies a missing Microsoft runtime such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll. Visual C++ does not replace awscommonui.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if reinstalling Adobe does not help?

Check the exact executable path, antivirus history, application architecture, dependencies, user profile, and compatibility with your Windows release. If the message says the file is not designed to run on Windows, suspect a wrong or incompatible binary rather than a simple missing file.

Should I keep repairing an old Adobe application?

If the program remains incompatible after a correct reinstall and compatibility test, migrating to a supported Adobe product may be more reliable. A current installer may not contain the legacy component required by the old application, and that omission is expected rather than evidence that Windows is missing a system file.
