awview32.dll is a legacy Microsoft At Work Fax file, not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 runtime. If Windows reports that awview32.dll is missing, the safest solution is to identify the old program requesting it and restore that complete application or Fax Viewer installation rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What awview32.dll belongs to
awview32.dll supported the Fax Viewer included with Windows 95 and used with Microsoft At Work Fax, Microsoft Exchange fax workflows, and related legacy software. It helped display fax images stored in the .AWD format.

Some old imaging or fax applications may also have bundled or depended on the same viewer files. That does not mean every modern fax program uses awview32.dll, and it does not belong in every copy of C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
The original Fax Viewer installation commonly depended on additional files, including:

Errors associated with the file
Depending on the program and Windows version, you may see messages such as:
- “A problem occurred while working with, or connecting to, a linked or an embedded object or its source application.”
- “This application failed to start because awview32.dll was not found.”
- “The file awview32.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “The program can’t start because awview32.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading awview32.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
The wording may vary. The message does not prove that the DLL itself is the only missing component.

Before fixing anything, identify the calling program
Do not begin by searching for a random copy of the DLL. First determine which program displays the error.
- Note the title bar of the error window.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Processes or Details.
- Look for the application that was starting when the error appeared.
- Right-click it, choose Open file location, and record its installation folder.
- Search that folder for
FAXVIEW.EXE,awview32.dll, and the MFC files listed above. - If the error appeared when opening an
.AWDfile, right-click the file, select Open with, and note the selected application.
If the program is no longer needed, the safest fix may be to stop opening the obsolete file association instead of rebuilding the legacy viewer on the current operating system.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete legacy application
This is the most reliable fix when the error comes from an old fax, imaging, or document program.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the program that produced the error.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the application from its original installer or an installation source you trust.
- Restart again and test the original action.
If the installer offers components, select Fax Viewer, Microsoft Fax, At Work Fax, or any equivalent viewer option. Do not install unrelated Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages simply because a DLL error appeared.
If the old installer cannot run on Windows 10 or Windows 11, do not force the installation by copying files into system folders. Install the application in a compatible isolated Windows 95 or Windows 98 virtual machine, or use a supported method to convert or view the old fax.
Fix 2: Restore the file from authentic Windows 95 media
Microsoft’s historical Fax Viewer troubleshooting guidance recommends extracting replacement files from the original Windows 95 disks or CD-ROM. This is preferable to downloading a standalone DLL.
The exact cabinet name differs between Windows 95 editions and media. On a genuine Windows 95 system or compatible legacy environment:
- Insert the original Windows 95 CD or mount its authentic image.
- Open Command Prompt.
- Locate the Windows 95
EXTRACTutility. - Display the cabinet contents with a command similar to:
EXTRACT /A /D D:WIN95_02.CAB AWVIEW32.DLL
- Extract the file to the required legacy Windows directory:
EXTRACT /A D:WIN95_02.CAB AWVIEW32.DLL /L C:WINDOWSSYSTEM
Replace D: with the actual media drive and adjust the cabinet name if your edition uses a different one.

If FAXVIEW.EXE or the file association is missing, reinstall the Fax Viewer or Microsoft Fax component instead of treating the DLL as a standalone program.
Do not judge authenticity by file size alone. Historical Windows 95 inventories contain different builds and sizes, so a matching file must come from the correct installation media or a known-good installation of the same software.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows Security quarantined it
If the program worked previously and the error appeared after a security scan, check Protection History before reinstalling anything.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
awview32.dll, the calling application, or its installation folder. - Expand the detection to view its path and details.
- Restore or allow the file only if you have verified that it came from authentic installation media or a known-good matching installation.
Microsoft explains the Protection History process in its Windows Security Protection History guidance.

Do not create an exclusion for an unknown DLL merely to make the error disappear. If the file is located in an unrelated temporary folder or has suspicious behavior, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
Fix 4: Repair current Windows components
System File Checker and DISM repair protected components belonging to the current Windows installation. They can correct broader Windows corruption, but they are not guaranteed to recreate the obsolete Windows 95 Fax Viewer file.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the calling application again.
Microsoft documents these commands in its System File Checker guidance.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without checking what changed can make troubleshooting slow and inconclusive. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work by scanning for reported Windows problems and showing what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the obsolete Fax Viewer component.

If DISM or SFC reports corruption, restart and run the commands again only as directed by the result. If they complete successfully but the same old application still requests awview32.dll, return to the application reinstall or legacy-environment solution.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help if the file disappeared after a recent installation, cleanup, or system change.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
System Restore does not guarantee recovery of an old application’s files. If the program was installed long ago or the restore point does not contain its files, reinstall the application from its original source.
Fix 6: Check Windows Features, but do not expect Fax Viewer there
Some Windows components can be managed through Optional Features, but current Windows versions do not automatically provide the Windows 95 Fax Viewer just because a related feature is enabled.
To inspect available components:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the available Windows features.
- Enable only a feature that clearly matches the application’s documented requirements.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
If no Fax Viewer or Microsoft At Work Fax feature is listed, that is expected on many current installations. Do not enable unrelated features in the hope that they will supply awview32.dll.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall a related device driver
A printer, scanner, or fax modem driver can cause an old fax workflow to fail, but a driver update does not normally recreate awview32.dll.
Use Windows Update first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if available.
- Install the driver that matches your hardware.
- Restart Windows.
You can also check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Imaging devices, Modems, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart and test the fax application.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which installed drivers are outdated instead of making you inspect many devices manually; the full version performs the driver installation, and updating a driver will not replace the legacy Fax Viewer files themselves.
If Device Manager reports no problem and the error names only awview32.dll, focus on the application and its dependencies rather than repeatedly reinstalling drivers.
Fix 8: Move the old software to an isolated legacy environment
Windows 95-era software may depend on obsolete APIs, 16-bit installers, old MFC libraries, registry entries, or file associations that current Windows does not provide. Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 also used different fax-viewing components in some situations.
If the application cannot be installed reliably on Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Preserve the original installer and media.
- Do not copy individual DLLs into the modern Windows system directories.
- Use an appropriately isolated Windows 95 or Windows 98 virtual machine where legally available.
- Install the complete fax application inside that environment.
- Open or convert the
.AWDfiles there. - Keep the environment disconnected from the internet unless access is essential and appropriately protected.
If you only need to read old fax files, a supported conversion or viewing path is safer than rebuilding an obsolete system component on the host operating system.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy regsvr32 awview32.dll is usually the wrong fix
Do not blindly run:
regsvr32 awview32.dll
regsvr32 works only with DLLs that expose the required registration entry points, such as DllRegisterServer. Many DLLs are not self-registering. Microsoft’s Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance explains why registration can fail and why 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the tool differ.

There is no reliable basis for assuming that every build of awview32.dll is self-registering. Re-registration also cannot restore missing companion files, FAXVIEW.EXE, registry associations, or obsolete runtime dependencies.
What not to do
Do not download a random copy
A DLL download may contain malware, the wrong historical build, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the calling application. It may also leave the real dependency problem unresolved.
There is no verified current Microsoft standalone download package for awview32.dll. Use the original Windows installation media, the original application installer, or a known-good matching installation instead.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64 by default
awview32.dll is a legacy 32-bit component. Its correct location depends on the application and historical installation. A 64-bit Windows system directory is not automatically the correct destination, and system-wide copying can create conflicts.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Visual C++ redistributables, DirectX, and .NET are not interchangeable with Microsoft At Work Fax. Install them only when the application specifically requires them and you have verified that requirement.
Do not assume SFC will restore it
SFC repairs protected current Windows files. It is not a universal repair tool for an optional Windows 95 accessory or an old third-party application.
32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
awview32.dll is a 32-bit legacy DLL. A 64-bit replacement is not a valid substitute, and a 32-bit DLL cannot make an incompatible legacy application work automatically on 64-bit Windows.

How to tell whether the repair worked
The repair is successful when:
- The original program starts without the
awview32.dllerror. - The Fax Viewer opens the intended
.AWDfile. - The application can display or print the fax.
- No new error names an MFC file or
FAXVIEW.EXE. - The repaired program loads from its intended installation directory.
If a new DLL name appears, do not download it automatically. That usually indicates an incomplete installation or a missing dependency set. Reinstall the complete application or move it to a compatible legacy environment.
FAQ
Is awview32.dll a Windows 11 system file?
No. It is associated with the Windows 95-era Microsoft At Work Fax and Fax Viewer components. It is not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 runtime.
Is awview32.dll malware?
The filename itself is legitimate, but a file with that name is not automatically safe. Check its location, origin, and security status. A copy from authentic installation media is more meaningful than a matching filename in an unrelated folder.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I fix it by installing Visual C++?
Usually not. The file belongs to a legacy fax viewer, and its dependencies may include old MFC files. Installing a current Visual C++ package does not recreate the complete Fax Viewer installation.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Not unless the exact application documentation confirms that the DLL is self-registering. Blind registration often produces another error and does not restore missing Fax Viewer components.
Does Windows Update provide it?
Windows Update is not a dependable source for this Windows 95-era file. Use the original application installer or authentic Windows 95 media.
What if I only need to read an .AWD file?
Avoid rebuilding the old component on your main Windows installation if possible. Use a supported conversion or viewing method, or open the file inside an appropriately isolated legacy environment containing the complete Fax Viewer installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat information should I provide when asking for further help?
Record the Windows version, the exact error wording, the application that displays it, whether an .AWD file is involved, the path of any existing awview32.dll, and whether FAXVIEW.EXE is present. These details distinguish a missing DLL from an incomplete legacy application or a compatibility failure.
