Short answer: the “AYN dual-screen handheld” is the AYN Thor, not the single-screen Odin 3. Choose the Odin 3 for the simplest, strongest all-round Android gaming experience; choose the Thor for a lower-cost physical dual-screen layout; and choose the AYANEO Pocket DS if its large 7-inch OLED and 5-inch 4:3 lower display are the main reason you are buying. For Nintendo DS and 3DS, screen arrangement, touch input and hinge ergonomics matter more than processor branding.
At a glance
These are three different propositions rather than three versions of the same handheld. The Odin 3 is a conventional landscape device. The Thor is AYN’s clamshell dual-screen model. The Pocket DS is AYANEO’s premium dual-screen competitor.

The buying decision in one minute
Pick the Odin 3 for a conventional powerhouse
Its 6-inch 120Hz AMOLED, Android 15, 8,000mAh battery and 390g listed weight make it the least complicated choice for ordinary Android games, streaming, remote play and single-screen emulators. There is no hinge, second-display management or unused lower panel. It is also the only option here with a clearly listed current starting price and RAM/storage ladder. The cost is that DS and 3DS emulation must be arranged on one physical display.

Pick the Thor for the value dual-screen idea
The Thor is the AYN product meant by “AYN dual-screen handheld.” Its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and clamshell layout target buyers who specifically want two panels, while the $259 starting price is below the Odin 3’s $349 starting price. Those figures are not an equal configuration comparison: Thor’s exact memory and storage for that price are not stated, and both listings are batch-based preorders. Confirm the selected specification, warranty and shipping terms at checkout.
Pick the Pocket DS for the display experience
The Pocket DS offers the most ambitious screen combination: a large 7-inch 16:9 1080p OLED up to 165Hz and a 5-inch 4:3 LCD below it. That makes the lower panel unusually suitable for DS-style layouts while preserving a genuinely large upper screen for Android games and video. It is the specialist choice, not the obvious value choice; current retail pricing and availability need checking rather than relying on its historical campaign price.
What the second screen actually changes
Nintendo DS and 3DS
A physical lower display lets an emulator keep the game view and touch interface visible simultaneously. The Pocket DS’s 5-inch 4:3 panel should fit a DS-era screen shape with less wasted width than a wide phone-like display. The Thor may feel closer to a compact 3DS-style arrangement, but its complete screen dimensions and spacing are not established by the cited official material.
In practice, check four things rather than assuming “dual screen” means perfect emulation:

- Whether both screens remain visible at a comfortable hinge angle while your thumbs stay on the controls.
- Whether touch targets are large enough for fingers or whether a stylus is preferable. AYN lists a Thor stylus among its accessories at its accessories collection.
- Whether the emulator supports per-game screen swapping, rotation, gap size and touch calibration.
- Whether the lower panel’s brightness and viewing angle are adequate; the Pocket DS lower screen is LCD rather than OLED.
Games that use the second screen for maps or menus are usually more forgiving than titles requiring constant, precise touch input. Portrait games and titles that expect a stylus can still require awkward hand movements on either clamshell. A hinge that is stable on a table may feel less convenient when the device is held in both hands.
One screen versus two
The Odin 3 can simulate two screens through emulator layouts, stacked views, overlays or rapid screen switching. That is useful, but it shrinks the playable image or replaces the physical separation with software controls. If DS or 3DS is an occasional activity, this compromise may be preferable to carrying a heavier clamshell. If it is the reason for buying, a native dual-screen device removes a recurring annoyance.
Performance and emulation
Chip names do not establish a universal winner. Emulator performance varies by game, emulator version, graphics driver, Vulkan behavior, operating-system support, thermal limits and configuration. The Odin 3 uses Qualcomm’s Dragonwing Q8, the Thor is listed with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and AYANEO specifies Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 with a claimed 15W peak TDP and PC-style cooling. Those are platform descriptions, not guarantees of flawless PS2, GameCube, Wii or Switch operation.
For a purchase decision, treat high-end systems as experimentation unless independent testing covers the exact games you care about. Look for sustained frame rate, thermal throttling, fan noise, controller mapping and game-specific emulator profiles. Dual-screen output may also alter heat and battery behavior, so single-screen benchmark results should not be transferred automatically to the Thor or Pocket DS.

RAM and storage
Odin 3 configurations range from 8GB/128GB to 24GB/1TB. More RAM is not automatically useful for ordinary retro emulation; chipset, drivers and emulator software usually matter more. Storage capacity is the practical differentiator for a large, legally obtained library. Community reporting says later Thor batches moved from UFS 4.0 to UFS 3.1 because of supply and cost changes; treat that as batch-specific and verify the storage type on your order confirmation: community report.
Android games, streaming and remote play
The Odin 3 is the least compromised for conventional landscape Android games. One uninterrupted 6-inch panel avoids letterboxing decisions between two screens, and there is no lower display to ignore. Cloud gaming, remote play and video apps likewise behave like they do on a normal Android handheld.
The Pocket DS’s 7-inch OLED can be more immersive for streaming and games that benefit from a large image. Its 165Hz ceiling is most relevant to compatible Android interfaces and games, not to most retro emulation. The Thor and Pocket DS carry clamshell hardware even when an app uses only one screen, so the second panel becomes extra weight and power demand in those sessions.
Ergonomics and portability
The Odin 3’s 390g listed weight is close to Android Central’s approximately 380g report for the Thor, so “dual screen” does not automatically mean dramatically heavier in these two cases. Neither should be described as jeans-pocket portable; a large coat pocket or bag is the realistic expectation. The Pocket DS’s weight and closed dimensions are not stated in the cited material, but its 7-inch upper panel and clamshell construction indicate a larger carry footprint than a conventional 6-inch handheld.

Before ordering a clamshell, consider whether you will play with it open on a lap, at a desk or in both hands; whether the hinge opens easily and stays rigid; whether triggers and sticks remain comfortable while touching the lower screen; and whether charging cables, heat and fan noise interfere with your grip. Closing the device protects both panels during transport, but introduces hinge wear and two-screen failure points. Ask the seller specifically about hinge, dead-pixel and battery coverage.

Rated capacity is 8,000mAh for the Odin 3, 6,000mAh for the Thor and 8,000mAh in AYANEO’s Pocket DS launch material. These numbers are not runtime tests. Two active displays, a 165Hz refresh mode, OLED versus LCD power characteristics, emulator load and high TDP settings can change endurance substantially. Charging speed, charger inclusion and play-while-charging behavior require separate confirmation; do not infer them from capacity alone.
Software, updates and support
The Odin 3 listing specifies Android 15 and a one-year warranty. The Thor storefront currently shows Android 13. A newer Android version can improve app compatibility and security support, but it does not by itself prove faster emulation. The Pocket DS depends on AYANEO’s dual-screen software for screen assignment, touch behavior and per-game management, so launcher quality and update cadence matter as much as the hardware.
For any of the three, check firmware frequency, built-in button mapping, screen-management tools, replacement-part availability, return shipping responsibility, dead-pixel policy, international warranty handling and customs exposure. Do not assume AYN and AYANEO offer equivalent after-sales service.

Price, batches and purchase risk
Prices below are time-stamped to August 18, 2026. AYN lists the Odin 3 from $349 in a Batch 8 preorder and the Thor from $259 in a Batch 7 preorder on its storefront. A preorder is not immediate in-stock delivery; the Odin 3 page describes estimated batch shipping rather than a guaranteed arrival date. Thor’s starting price may represent a lower RAM/storage version, so compare like-for-like configurations.
AYANEO’s official launch material confirms the Pocket DS, but the cited current pages do not provide a dependable August 2026 retail price. Android Central reported an early-bird 8GB/128GB price of $399 during the campaign; that historical figure should not be presented as today’s checkout price. Verify whether a listing is campaign fulfillment, preorder, backorder or regular retail before paying.
Final recommendations
- Best overall performance and simplest experience: AYN Odin 3. Buy it when most of your games use one landscape screen and you value Android 15, battery capacity and a straightforward handheld.
- Best value dual-screen option: AYN Thor. Choose it when a native clamshell is essential and its exact lower-cost configuration, batch and warranty satisfy you.
- Best dual-screen display experience: AYANEO Pocket DS. Choose it for the 7-inch OLED plus 5-inch 4:3 LCD, accepting the larger design and uncertain current price or availability.
- Best for DS/3DS: choose between the Thor’s potentially more compact, 3DS-like arrangement and the Pocket DS’s larger, more spacious panels. Compare touch accuracy, stylus access, hinge angle and emulator layout support—not just processors.
Whichever model you select, use game software you legally own or have lawfully dumped; a dual-screen device does not include rights to copyrighted games.
