There is no universal cost or performance winner. For a stream sent from a Google Compute Engine VM to YouTube, Google lists VM-to-YouTube data transfer in a no-charge category. You still pay for the VM and other billable resources, and that network-pricing distinction does not establish that a particular VM can sustain your encoder workload. Azure costs and capacity depend on the VM, operating system, runtime, storage, network use, and destination.
Choose between them by matching a specific VM and region to your encoder, estimating the full month of resources, and testing the actual stream. If you want to avoid managing a VM, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative that loops uploaded videos to YouTube without keeping your own computer on.
What matters most for a 24/7 YouTube stream
A live stream from a VM typically depends on an encoder running continuously, a stable connection to YouTube’s ingest service, and enough compute and network capacity for the selected settings. These are separate questions: cloud-provider bandwidth limits describe a maximum network allowance, not a promise that an encoder will sustain a chosen bitrate or that a stream will remain uninterrupted.
- Encoder workload: Resolution, frame rate, codec, and whether the VM must encode video or simply send an already encoded stream affect the compute requirement. The available provider documentation does not establish a minimum VM size for an unspecified workload.
- Network capacity: Compare the exact VM’s outbound limit with the stream’s bitrate, leaving room for protocol overhead and other traffic. Treat the limit as an upper bound, not an ingest guarantee.
- Full-time cost: Estimate the VM for its intended runtime, plus the operating system, disks, IP or other network resources, and applicable outbound transfer.
- Destination-specific pricing: The cost of outbound traffic depends on where it goes and, for Google Cloud, the applicable Network Service Tier.
Azure and Google Cloud compared
| Decision point | Azure VM | Google Cloud VM |
|---|---|---|
| VM-to-YouTube transfer | Estimate bandwidth charges for the selected configuration and destination; the reviewed Azure source does not establish a matching no-charge rule. | Google’s network-pricing page lists VM-to-YouTube data transfer in a no-charge category. This applies to that documented destination category, not every kind of Google Cloud outbound traffic. |
| Network capacity | Outbound throughput is allocated per VM across all NICs and destinations. The published limit is not a sustained encoder-throughput guarantee. | Maximum egress depends on the machine type and destination route. The published limit is an upper bound, not a guarantee of achieved stream bitrate. |
| Compute and operating system | Estimate using the VM size, operating system, and hours it will run. | Estimate using the VM configuration, region or zone, operating system, and hours it will run. |
| Storage and retained resources | Include attached storage and other resources. Microsoft notes that an OS disk retained after stopping a VM can continue to incur charges. | Include disks and other deployed resources in addition to the VM; the total depends on the selected configuration and location. |
| Monthly price verdict | Not established without a specific region, VM, OS, runtime, storage, and traffic estimate. | Not established without matched assumptions. The YouTube transfer rule alone does not make a Google Cloud VM free. |
These comparisons reflect official Microsoft and Google Cloud documentation and pricing pages reviewed October 3, 2026. Neither provider’s published network ceiling proves end-to-end performance for a particular stream, and the available material does not provide an apples-to-apples benchmark of the two services.

How to choose a VM and estimate the real cost
- Define the stream. Record resolution, frame rate, encoder and codec, target bitrate, and whether the VM will encode the video or transmit an already encoded source. Decide whether it needs to run continuously for a full month.
- Select a region and candidate VM. Choose a region close to the relevant services and a VM family and size appropriate to the actual encoder workload. Confirm that the SKU is available for your account and region. No tested minimum size is established here.
- Check the VM’s network specification. Compare its outbound limit with the stream bitrate and account for other traffic and overhead. On Azure, Microsoft says all traffic leaving a VM counts toward its allocated limit, regardless of destination. On Google Cloud, maximum possible egress depends on machine type and destination route. Neither figure promises the stream’s achieved bitrate.
- Build a continuous-runtime estimate. Include compute hours for the intended operating schedule, OS charges if applicable, attached disks, IP and other network resources, and outbound traffic. For an always-on deployment, estimate the actual long runtime rather than extrapolating from a short test.
- Apply destination-specific network pricing. For a Google VM sending to YouTube, use the documented VM-to-YouTube no-charge category, but keep compute, disk, and other applicable resource charges in the estimate. For other Google Cloud destinations, outbound pricing depends on destination and Network Service Tier; do not assume YouTube’s treatment applies.
- Compare matched estimates. Use each provider’s current pricing tools with the same region assumptions, runtime, operating system, storage, and workload. Google notes that regional and zonal pricing can vary. Recheck current SKU availability and prices before deployment.
- Test the complete path. Run the selected encoder and VM against the intended YouTube ingest destination, verify stream health, and observe resource use before relying on the setup for continuous operation.
What the Google Cloud YouTube transfer rule does—and does not—mean
Google’s network-pricing page lists VM-to-YouTube data transfer among the specific Google product transfers with no charge. That can make the traffic line item meaningfully different from a destination for which outbound transfer is billed. It does not eliminate charges for the VM, disks, IPs, or other resources, and it is not a blanket rule for all Google Cloud traffic.
Google Cloud’s broader network pricing distinguishes inbound and outbound transfer, and outbound cost varies by destination and Network Service Tier. Therefore, do not apply a generic egress rate to a VM-to-YouTube stream—or extend the YouTube rule to a different destination—without checking the current pricing page for the actual route.

Common mistakes and troubleshooting
- The estimate treats Google Cloud as entirely free. Only the documented VM-to-YouTube transfer category is no-charge; include VM compute, disks, and other resources.
- A high network limit is treated as proof of stream stability. A VM’s published egress ceiling is not the achieved encoder bitrate or a guarantee of YouTube ingest. Test with the actual configuration.
- The comparison uses different assumptions. Match region, VM workload and size, OS, runtime, storage, and destination before comparing totals.
- Azure’s total overlooks outbound traffic or retained storage. Azure counts all VM egress toward the allocated limit, and an OS disk can continue costing money after the VM is stopped if retained. Include both in planning.
- A test works, but the always-on deployment is not costed or validated. Estimate the intended continuous runtime and verify the full streaming path under the selected configuration before depending on it.
