To stream to YouTube Live with XSplit Broadcaster, build your scene, connect a YouTube Live output, and start sending video before the event. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and key if XSplit asks for them. Check the incoming preview and stream health before you click Go live.

Before you start: enable YouTube Live and prepare your event

You need a YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before a scheduled broadcast. Open YouTube Studio, choose Go Live to enter Live Control Room, then create a stream or select the scheduled event you plan to use. Check the title, description, visibility, and other event details.

YouTube’s default privacy setting varies by age: for users aged 13–17 it is private, and for users 18 or older it is public. You can change the setting. See YouTube’s encoder live-stream guide and guide to managing live stream settings.

Build your scene in XSplit Broadcaster

Add the sources you need for your show: gameplay or screen capture, camera, microphone, and any overlays. XSplit’s getting-started workflow is to create a scene, set up streaming, and then use the Stream control. Its guide also describes setting resolution and frame rate at the top of the canvas. For the current output setup, use Broadcast > Set up a new Output, select a platform, and follow the wizard. Menu wording can change with software updates; the wizard may optimize settings for your hardware and connection.

Use Custom RTMP if needed

  1. In XSplit, choose Broadcast > Set up a new Output > Custom RTMP.
  2. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the event you intend to use. Paste each into its matching field in XSplit.
  3. Name the output so you can identify it in XSplit’s Broadcast menu, then save it.
  4. Start the saved output from Broadcast.
  5. Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. For a scheduled event, click Go live after the preview appears.

The stream key authenticates where your encoder sends its feed, so treat it like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update XSplit; YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance. XSplit also documents setting up Custom RTMP for different platforms.

Prefer RTMPS when supported

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP with TLS/SSL. Live Control Room shows the standard RTMP URL by default; to use RTMPS, expose and copy the RTMPS URL from Stream settings, then enter it in the encoder. If XSplit does not offer a YouTube RTMPS preset, enter the RTMPS URL manually. YouTube says port 443 may be specified if needed. Details: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Choose encoder settings that your connection can sustain

YouTube recommends letting the platform detect resolution and frame rate by default. If you set them yourself, choose a resolution and frame rate that your computer and reliable upload capacity can sustain. The following are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates; they are not a guarantee that your connection or PC can maintain them. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not display a publication year for these recommendations.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are selected entries from YouTube’s broader recommendations, which also cover 4K, 1440p, 480p, and 360p. Consult YouTube’s full encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for those cases and current details.

Match the encoder to YouTube’s technical guidance

  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; use RTMPS when supported.
  • Video codecs: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps.
  • Keyframes: use a 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Rate control: use CBR.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate.

YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Allow for the stream’s bitrate, other traffic on your connection, and any backup stream you plan to run; YouTube’s streaming tips specify capacity for the primary stream plus any backup plus that headroom. A high peak speed is not enough if upload throughput fluctuates, so test at the time and location you expect to broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Choose latency for the kind of show

If close-to-real-time audience interaction matters, choose a latency setting that supports it, while remembering YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. For a broadcast where interaction is less important, prioritize a stable viewing experience instead. YouTube describes the options in its live stream settings guidance.

Run a preflight, go live, and end cleanly

  1. Test a representative scene. Include gameplay or screen motion, the camera if used, and the audio sources you will use in the real show. Check that movement remains clear and speech or game audio is audible.
  2. Start early. YouTube recommends setting up at least 2 hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand.
  3. Inspect Live Control Room. Start the XSplit output, wait for the preview, and check stream health before going live. For a scheduled event, click Go live once the preview appears.
  4. Monitor during the broadcast. Keep an eye on stream health and audio/video. Avoid changing to a bitrate your upload connection cannot sustain.
  5. End the broadcast. Use the Live Control Room controls as appropriate and stop the XSplit encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Troubleshoot common XSplit-to-YouTube problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
No preview or no connection The wrong event is selected, credentials are stale or in the wrong fields, or the XSplit output is not running. Confirm the intended Live Control Room event, check the URL and key, and verify that the output is started from XSplit’s Broadcast menu.
RTMPS SSL or connection error The URL may be standard RTMP rather than RTMPS, or the encoder may not support RTMPS. Check the URL and encoder support. YouTube says port 443 may be specified if needed.
Dropped frames or buffering Bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or other traffic may be consuming bandwidth. Lower bitrate or resolution, account for competing traffic, and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom. Consider whether a less aggressive latency setting better suits the show.
Stream key exposed Someone may be able to send a feed using the compromised credential. Have a channel owner or manager reset the key in Live Control Room, then update XSplit.
Scheduled show does not start on time The wrong scheduled event may be selected, or the encoder may not have been started early enough to confirm preview. Verify the selected event and start XSplit early enough to check the incoming preview before the planned start.

For the connection and event workflow, consult YouTube’s encoder streaming guide and XSplit’s stream setup guide.

Or let it run in the cloud

The XSplit steps above are for broadcasting a live production from your PC. If instead you want an uploaded video or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, supports uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and gives each account one free day with no card required.

Each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. Plans differ by duration, not features. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
