First determine whether the audio is offset by roughly the same amount from the start or drifts farther out of sync as the stream runs. A fixed offset calls for measured alignment; accumulating drift calls for checking timestamps and clocks, and may warrant FFmpeg’s aresample compensation. There is no universal sync flag, and the available official guidance does not identify Azure VMs as the cause.
Diagnose the kind of sync problem before changing FFmpeg
Compare the audio and video near the beginning and later in the same recording or stream preview. If the gap stays about the same, investigate an initial timing offset. If it grows, investigate timestamp progression, clock differences, or track timing. A delay filter that corrects the start cannot reliably fix ongoing drift.
- Check where the problem first appears. Compare the source, a local output or archive, and YouTube’s preview. If the archive is already out of sync, focus on the source and FFmpeg processing. If it is clean but the YouTube preview or viewers’ playback is not, inspect the publishing path, stream health, network, and player conditions.
- Record the deployment details. Note the FFmpeg version and build, input arrangement, output topology, and whether the output is one muxed stream or separate devices. These details determine which remedy can be appropriate.
- Inspect stream metadata. Run
ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format -of json INPUTon the source and, if available, the local output. Compare audio and video start times, durations, time bases, and timestamp progression. Metadata alone may not reveal every playback or device-buffering issue, so also inspect representative audio and motion.
YouTube’s live troubleshooting guidance recommends inspecting the encoder, local archive, CPU load, and outbound connectivity. These are diagnostic checks, not evidence that Azure CPU or networking caused a particular sync defect. See YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance.
Use aresample only for measured timestamp drift
FFmpeg’s aresample filter can adjust audio to match timestamps by stretching, squeezing, filling, or trimming samples. Compensation is disabled by default: “Default value is 0, thus no compensation is applied to make the samples match the audio timestamps.” The option’s async value sets a maximum adjustment rate in samples per second; it is not a recommended correction amount for every stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If measurements show gradual drift against reliable timestamps, test a value such as -af aresample=async=1000 as a starting experiment, then compare the result against the input timestamps and local output. Do not treat 1000 as a universal setting: choose or adjust the rate based on the observed drift and confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the filter. The FFmpeg Resampler Documentation describes the compensation options.
If you know the expected first audio timestamp, the resampler’s first_pts option can pad or trim at the start to align initial timing. That is an initial-alignment tool, not a cure for clock drift that continues during playback.

Correct a constant offset at the source of the timing error
Measure how far audio leads or trails video and identify which input starts early or late. In a workflow with separate inputs, correct the relevant input timing or use an appropriate audio or video delay filter. The exact filter and value depend on the input arrangement and measured offset; without those details, a single command would be guesswork.
Recheck the offset later in the stream. If it changes, stop treating the issue as a fixed delay and investigate timestamp progression or clock differences instead. A FFmpeg-user discussion of YouTube Live capture reported that the observed delay varied between runs, so a value that appeared to work once is not necessarily stable.

Check whether separate outputs are being synchronized
If FFmpeg sends video and audio to different playback devices or sinks, those outputs may buffer and schedule independently. An FFmpeg-user case describes YouTube Live video sent to a loopback device and audio to a sound card; the reply notes that the two outputs were not synchronized as a pair. For workflows that require synchronized encoded media, keep audio and video on a common timestamp timeline and mux them into one output when the architecture allows.
FFmpeg output sync modes and muxers can alter timestamps. Options such as -copyts or a frame-rate mode affect timestamp handling; neither should be added as a blanket cure for incorrect input timing. Check the FFmpeg command-line documentation for the behavior relevant to your installed version and output format.

Validate the YouTube live ingest separately
For its listed RTMP/RTMPS live encoder guidance, YouTube supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and recommends AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, plus a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. These ingest recommendations do not prove that source timestamps are correct.
Test with representative sound and motion, review the local archive, and monitor YouTube stream health. If the local archive is clean, use stream-health and delivery checks to narrow down where the mismatch is introduced. YouTube’s recommendations and stream-health advice are in its live encoder settings and bitrates guidance.

Common troubleshooting branches
- Audio is already late or early in the source: inspect source track start times and timing before changing output sync flags; align the relevant input based on a measured offset.
- The gap grows during playback: compare timestamp progression and test
aresamplecompensation only if timestamps are reliable and the installed build supports it. - The archive is synchronized but YouTube is not: inspect encoder errors, stream health, outbound connectivity, and playback conditions rather than presuming a VM-specific fault.
- Audio and video go to separate devices: check device buffering and scheduling; if synchronized encoded playback is the goal, consider a single muxed output on a shared timeline.
- A sync flag makes results worse or inconsistent: remove blanket timestamp or frame-rate changes and retest while changing one timing variable at a time.
