How to approach the groups
Start with familiar measurements
AREA, LENGTH, PERIMETER, and VOLUME are all measurement terms. If you spot several words that belong to school mathematics, check whether the connection is specifically geometric calculations rather than a broad subject such as “math.”
Check more than one kind of black-and-white thing
A crossword, domino, orca, and Oreo are very different things, but each fits the same visual description. Connections can group words across objects, animals, and foods rather than within one narrow category.

Look for proper names
ARIA, ENCORE, EXCALIBUR, and LUXOR are casino hotel names in Las Vegas. A set of familiar names may share a location or type of place even when their words do not look alike.
Read the remaining words aloud
The final group depends on pronunciation: ARS sounds like “R’s,” AYES like “I’s,” EASE like “E’s,” and OWES like “O’s.” Reading candidates aloud is a useful way to catch a connection that spelling alone can obscure.
