Baby Steps turns the simple act of walking into its whole game: guide each leg, keep Nate upright and pick a way up a mountain where a bad stumble can undo hard-won progress. That premise makes for unusually tactile comedy and exploration, but the same falls that create its best stories can make the hike feel punishing. It is a 2025 award-recognized comedy—not a winner of PC Gamer’s overall Game of the Year award.
What is Baby Steps?
Baby Steps is a physics-based hiking adventure by Gabe Cuzzillo, Maxi Boch and Bennett Foddy, published by Devolver Digital. You guide Nate through a misty mountain landscape, placing his feet and controlling his legs rather than moving him with ordinary directional controls. The official descriptions also highlight hazards, local wildlife and a dynamic soundtrack. Steam lists the release date as 23 September 2025; official links point to Steam and PS5 versions. Steam PlayStation
The PlayStation listing describes fully simulated, physics-based walking. That means movement is not just a novelty layered on top of a conventional adventure: it is the central challenge. Every stretch of ground asks you to think about balance, foot placement and the surface under Nate’s feet.
How does walking—and falling—feel?
Controlling each leg individually makes even routine movement feel deliberate. A careful step can be satisfying because it is the result of your input, not an animation carrying Nate forward. It can also feel fiddly: if you want responsive, dependable movement, having to manage each step may test your patience rather than your skill in a satisfying way.

Falls are the natural consequence of that system, and the source of much of the game’s slapstick. PC Gamer praised the game with an 85 score and called it a “Sisyphean challenge after which you’ll never take pressing W to walk for granted again.” That is a critic’s verdict, not a guarantee that every player will find a setback amusing. GamesRadar+ likewise praised the traversal and exploration while faulting some long recoveries and lost progress. PC Gamer’s review GamesRadar+’s review
The key question is how you respond when a stumble costs time. If recovering, trying a different line and finally staying upright feels like part of the joke, the friction can make success memorable. If repeating a long stretch after a fall feels like busywork, the same design may become more irritating than funny.

Does the mountain reward exploration?
The goal is geographical—a distant mountain—but the route need not be a straight march. A PlayStation Blog hands-on report describes players choosing diversions through the landscape. In that preview build, campfires helped indicate the general direction, and there was no map or waypoint system. Those navigation details are observations from the hands-on build, not a guarantee about every version or later update. PlayStation Blog’s hands-on report
That route-finding grew out of a change in scale. Bennett Foddy told PlayStation Blog: “But just as a test, I made a level that was 100 meters wide, and it was immediately clear to us that that was going to make for much more interesting gameplay, involving strategic route-finding as well as tactical foot placement.” The 100 meters refers to Foddy’s test level, not the width of the game world.

Exploration and movement therefore work together: choosing where to go is one problem; figuring out how Nate can get there without falling is another. The mountain setting gives those small tactical decisions room to develop into a hike rather than a sequence of tightly marked objectives.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Baby Steps actually funny?
Its comedy comes from the gap between the monumental task of climbing a mountain and Nate’s precarious, awkward movement. The falls are physical punchlines, but the humor is inseparable from the challenge: a mishap can be funny in the moment and frustrating when it sends you back over ground you have already covered.

PS5 controls and accessibility options
The PS5 listing includes advanced controller remapping, adjustable stick sensitivity and inversion. It also lists options to play without rapid button presses, motion controls, vibration or adaptive triggers. Those settings may help players tailor the experience, though they do not change the basic premise of physics-driven walking. The PlayStation Blog also describes tactile DualSense feedback as Nate walks over different surfaces; a DualSense controller is not established as a requirement.
Who should play Baby Steps?
It is a strong fit for players who enjoy unusual controls, physical comedy and figuring out their own route through an environment. The appeal depends less on conventional action or a smooth power fantasy than on paying attention to movement and finding humor in a journey that refuses to be effortless.
- Try it if individually controlled walking sounds fresh, you like exploratory detours, and setbacks give you a reason to laugh and adapt.
- Think twice if lost progress quickly drains your enjoyment, you prefer precise conventional movement, or you want navigation marked with familiar maps and waypoints.
Verdict: Is Baby Steps worth playing?
Baby Steps is worth playing if its central trade-off appeals to you: deliberate, physics-driven walking in exchange for a hike full of awkward comedy, route choices and genuine friction. Its distinctive control system gives simple movement a personality that ordinary game locomotion rarely has. But repeated falls and lengthy recoveries are not incidental annoyances; they are part of the experience, and they will be a deal-breaker for some players. Consider it a notable 2025 comedy contender, not an overall Game of the Year winner.
