Its wired connection, improved rigidity, magnetic case adapters and excellent platform integration make it a strong travel accessory. At the US list price of $99.99 (checked August 18, 2026), however, it is no longer an automatic recommendation: larger controllers with Hall-effect hardware or wireless support often cost less. Buy it for portability and the Backbone ecosystem, not for maximum ergonomics or features.
What the Backbone One 2nd Gen is
The Backbone One 2nd Gen is a telescoping controller that grips a phone and connects directly through its charging/data port. Choose either the Lightning or USB-C version; the connector is built into the controller and cannot be changed with an adapter. It has two analog sticks, a D-pad, ABXY buttons (or PlayStation symbols on the PlayStation Edition), shoulder buttons, analog triggers, a Backbone/app button and a capture button.
Because it draws power from the phone, there is no controller battery to charge and no Bluetooth pairing for normal use. A pass-through charging port lets you charge while playing. Backbone advertises a low-latency direct connection and supports wired use with an iPad, tablet, Mac or PC when you have a suitable cable. The charging connection does not carry video or audio to an external display. Backbone’s product page describes the second-generation design and current editions.
What changed from the first generation?
Magnetic adapters and better case fit
Gen 2 ships with interchangeable magnetic phone adapters. They make it easier to accommodate many slim cases, but this is not automatic compatibility with every case. Backbone’s instructions say to remove the factory adapters, try the smaller included adapters, or remove adapters altogether when a particular phone or case needs more clearance. Thick rugged, wallet, battery and unusually shaped cases may still need to come off. See the tested-case guidance for your exact phone.

Sturdier bridge
Independent hands-on coverage found the Gen 2 bridge substantially more rigid than the original. The phone feels less likely to flex the controller during play, while the telescoping design remains compact.
Redesigned D-pad
The revised D-pad is more responsive and directional than Gen 1’s. The overall concept is unchanged: this is still a small, wired, phone-mounted controller with no wireless mode.
Versions and phone compatibility
| Phone or device | Correct version or setup | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Older Lightning iPhone | Lightning Backbone One | Check the exact model, camera clearance and case against Backbone’s selector. |
| USB-C iPhone | USB-C Backbone One | Do not order the Lightning model; current product copy can lag behind newer iPhone generations. |
| USB-C Android phone | USB-C Backbone One | Confirm supported dimensions, software and case fit. |
| iPad, tablet, Mac or PC | Wired mode with a suitable cable | This is a cable-connected use case, not the normal handheld telescoping configuration. |
Backbone’s Lightning page text still references older iPhone generations, while its case-support material lists tested cases for newer models, including the iPhone 17 series. Treat the model selector and current support pages as the authority rather than assuming an old “iPhone 14 and earlier” sentence is exhaustive.
Standard, Xbox and PlayStation editions share the core hardware. The connector determines whether your phone fits; the edition mainly changes symbols, styling and some platform-specific official support. On Android, Backbone says only the PlayStation Edition is officially supported for PlayStation Remote Play, while its product FAQ says PlayStation Remote Play is not available on Android. Verify the current app and device requirements before buying specifically for that use.

Build, controls and comfort
Independent comparison coverage lists approximate dimensions of 176 × 94 × 34 mm (6.93 × 3.70 × 1.34 inches) and weight of about 138 g (4.86 oz). Those measurements are reported by comparison coverage rather than clearly exposed in the current official specification panel. The low weight and collapsing bridge make the One easy to carry in a small bag.
The controls are tactile and the Gen 2 D-pad is an improvement, but the sticks and face buttons are smaller than those on a conventional Xbox controller, DualSense or larger telescoping pad. Smaller hands may appreciate the compact reach; large hands can experience cramped thumbs or reduced palm support during long sessions. The triggers provide analog input, but the controller does not offer the Hall-effect sticks and triggers found in some newer competitors.
- Strengths: rigid-for-its-size bridge, improved D-pad, tactile buttons, low weight, direct low-latency input, capture and app shortcuts, and charging passthrough.
- Trade-offs: small controls, no Bluetooth, no normal standalone use without a mounted phone, and limited long-session palm support.
Tom’s Guide lists a 3.5 mm headphone jack, but the current official product information does not clearly confirm audio implementation for every revision. Check the exact edition’s specification before treating a headphone jack as guaranteed.
Games, cloud services and remote play
Native mobile games
The One works with iOS and Android games that implement controller support. Examples on Backbone’s product material include Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, Genshin Impact, Stardew Valley, Roblox and Minecraft. A controller cannot add native controls to a touch-only game. Backbone’s TouchSync feature may help with some Android titles, but it is not universal compatibility. Backbone’s game information identifies compatibility at the game and operating-system level.

Cloud gaming
Supported services include Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna and Apple Arcade or other compatible subscription ecosystems. You still need the relevant service subscription and a reliable, low-latency internet connection; the controller supplies input only.
Remote play and Steam Link
PlayStation Remote Play requires a PlayStation console, account, app and network setup. Xbox Remote Play similarly requires an Xbox console. Steam Link requires a suitable PC and network. These streams are games you own or access on another device, not games provided by the Backbone. Backbone’s requirements article explains the distinction.
Backbone app and Backbone+
You can use the controller in compatible games without opening the Backbone app every time. The app adds a unified library, discovery, capture and social features, firmware/software management, and links to supported platforms. Buy the hardware for those features only if you actually want that ecosystem.
Subscription wording is inconsistent. Backbone’s current Wired Mode support article says Backbone+ is not required for wired play. Elsewhere, product-page copy says wired mode requires it, and some app launch paths—particularly launching Xbox Cloud Gaming from inside the app—may be gated. Basic controller input and app-level benefits should therefore be treated separately, and current terms should be checked before subscribing.

Who should buy it?
- Buy it if you mainly play on a phone, value the smallest practical setup, want direct wired input with no pairing, and can confirm the correct connector and case fit.
- It is especially sensible for commuters, travelers and users who value Backbone’s library, capture and platform links.
- It becomes easier to recommend below the $99.99 list price, because larger or more capable alternatives can cost less.
Who should skip it?
- Choose another controller if you need wireless use with a phone, tablet, computer or TV.
- Large-handed players, users wanting full-size comfort, Hall-effect components, back buttons, vibration or extensive remapping will get more hardware elsewhere.
- Budget buyers who do not care about the Backbone app should consider the 8BitDo or GameSir options.
- Existing Gen 1 owners should upgrade mainly for the sturdier bridge, redesigned D-pad and case adapters; the core wired concept is unchanged.
Buying checklist
- Identify your phone’s port: Lightning or USB-C.
- Select the edition whose button layout and platform support match your use; Android PS Remote Play officially points to the PlayStation Edition.
- Check your exact phone and case in Backbone’s compatibility information.
- Plan for adapter swapping or case removal if the phone does not seat fully or the camera bump interferes.
- Confirm that your games support controllers and that any cloud or remote-play service, console, account and network requirements are met.
- Check current stock, price and Backbone+ terms for the exact configuration.
The Bottom Line
The Backbone One 2nd Gen is still a polished, exceptionally portable wired phone controller. Its improved build and case adapters solve real Gen 1 weaknesses, but $99.99 buys less hardware value in 2026. Choose it when compactness, instant setup and the Backbone ecosystem matter most; choose GameSir, 8BitDo or Backbone Pro when comfort, wireless use or advanced controls matter more.
