The Backbone One Xbox Edition is a USB-C controller that attaches to a compatible phone; it is not a handheld console and does not provide games by itself. It can control supported mobile games, Xbox Cloud Gaming streams, and Xbox Remote Play sessions from a console you own. Whether you need Game Pass depends on which game and play method you choose.
What is the Backbone One Xbox Edition?
Announced by Xbox on March 27, 2025, the Xbox Edition is a phone-mounted controller made with Backbone. Its translucent green finish, Xbox-style ABXY buttons and dedicated Xbox button echo an Xbox Wireless Controller. It connects directly to a phone’s USB-C port rather than pairing over Bluetooth, and the controller itself does not need battery charging. Backbone describes the direct connection as low latency; that does not guarantee lag-free streaming, which still depends on the network and service. The controller supplies physical controls and holds the phone. The phone, game, account and, depending on the game, subscription or Xbox console supply the rest. Xbox branding does not mean every game supports a controller or that every Xbox game is available to stream.
Price, availability and the included Game Pass offer
Xbox announced a U.S. launch price of $109.99. Backbone’s product page also lists $109.99, but its captured page showed “Sale Sold out”; inventory can change, so check the current product page before buying. The launch announcement’s reference to additional markets in April 2024 conflicts with its March 2025 date, so it does not establish current availability outside the United States.

The product page advertises one month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for eligible new members. The offer is redeemed through the Backbone app, expires March 31, 2028, and automatically renews unless canceled. Check the offer’s terms before redeeming; the included month is not an unconditional subscription for every purchaser.

Xbox Cloud Gaming
With cloud gaming, the game runs remotely and its video streams to your phone. The Backbone is the controller, not the cloud service or game library. Xbox currently lists cloud gaming with Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate, with catalog and service benefits varying by plan. Some supported free-to-play titles can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Game availability changes, and access to a game you own is limited to participating titles and regions. Check the live Xbox Cloud Gaming page and its catalog rather than assuming a particular game is included.

Xbox says cloud play requires an eligible subscription or a supported free-to-play title, a supported device and region, and a compatible controller unless a game supports touch controls. Native games downloaded from the App Store or Google Play are separate: they do not require Game Pass, but the individual game must support controllers to use the Backbone’s physical controls.
Xbox Remote Play
Remote Play streams games from your own Xbox console to a supported device. It is not a way to access someone else’s console or a cloud library without console setup. You need an Xbox profile, a console configured for remote features, the Xbox mobile app and a suitable network connection. Game Pass is not automatically required for every Remote Play game; access depends on the game and any online-service requirements it has.

Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data with at least 10 Mbps download speed for Remote Play. That is a connection guideline, not a promise of smooth play: home upload capacity, signal quality, congestion, latency and the phone’s connection also matter. Which phones fit?
At launch, Xbox specified USB-C iPhones, including iPhone 15 and later, and Android phones running Android 6.0 or newer. The Xbox Edition is not the Lightning model for older iPhones. Backbone says the second-generation controller works with most phones and slim cases, and includes magnetic adapters to help with fit. A USB-C port alone does not guarantee that a phone will fit securely: dimensions, port position and case shape or thickness matter. Check the exact phone against Backbone’s compatibility information, and remove a bulky case if it prevents the connector from seating properly.

How to set it up
- Confirm that your phone has USB-C and fits the controller; remove a case if it blocks the connector.
- Use the appropriate magnetic adapters if needed, then insert the phone into the controller so its USB-C connector seats fully.
- Open a controller-compatible mobile game, the Xbox app, or a supported cloud-gaming route, and sign in to the relevant account.
- For Cloud Gaming, choose a title available to your account in your region and plan. For Remote Play, configure your own console and start a session from the Xbox app.
The USB-C connection is designed to work without Bluetooth pairing or charging a separate controller battery. The Xbox button can open the Xbox guide or dashboard in supported Xbox games and apps; its behavior is not identical across every app. Backbone also says the button can be customized in supported contexts. What games and services can it control?
- Native mobile games: games on iOS or Android that support physical controllers. The Backbone does not add controller support to a touch-only game.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: eligible cloud titles, subject to plan, region and account requirements.
- Xbox Remote Play: supported games streamed from your configured Xbox console.
- Other streaming services: Backbone lists compatibility with other platforms and remote-play applications, but support depends on the app, phone and game.
One notable caveat for multi-console owners: Backbone says official PlayStation Remote Play on Android is not available with the Xbox Edition. Its PlayStation Edition is the officially supported Backbone model for PS Remote Play on Android. General controller compatibility with other apps should not be confused with official support for a particular remote-play service.
Is the Xbox Edition worth buying?
It makes sense if…
- You want a compact controller that attaches directly to a compatible USB-C phone.
- You regularly use Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play and prefer Xbox-style controls and the dedicated Xbox button.
- You value a wired connection and a controller that needs no separate battery charging.
- Your phone and case fit, and you also play controller-compatible mobile games.
Consider another option if…
- You want a standalone handheld, a wireless gamepad, or a full-size controller for several devices.
- You have a Lightning iPhone, play mostly touch-only games, or use a case that prevents a secure fit.
- You expect the controller to provide games, a Game Pass subscription, or remote access without a console.
- You prioritize official PlayStation Remote Play on Android, or already own a suitable Bluetooth controller and phone clip.
The standard Backbone One is the closer alternative if Xbox styling and branding are not priorities. A full-size Xbox Wireless Controller with a phone clip is bulkier but can also serve with a console or PC. Wireless mobile controllers offer more freedom in where the phone sits, but require pairing and typically their own charging. Compare fit, phone connector, platform support and features before choosing.
