Backbone Pro is one of the more comfortable telescopic phone controllers, with full-size ALPS thumbsticks, rear buttons and a wireless mode that lets it work beyond a phone. At its current US list price of $169.99, though, it is hard to recommend for casual mobile gaming: the $99.99 Backbone One is a more sensible buy if you mainly want a controller attached to your phone. Pro’s premium makes more sense if you play long sessions or regularly move between a phone, tablet, PC or TV.
What the Backbone Pro offers
Backbone Pro is a telescopic controller that expands around a compatible USB-C phone. In handheld mode, the phone plugs directly into the controller, which draws power from the phone. For supported devices, Bluetooth Low Energy also enables wireless play away from the phone, with Backbone rating the controller for up to 40 hours per charge. That runtime is a manufacturer estimate based on internal testing, and actual battery life varies. Backbone’s product page and launch announcement describe the two modes and the hardware.
The design is more substantial than Backbone One’s slim, phone-first form. Backbone specifies full-size ALPS joysticks, rear buttons, laser-etched grip texture and Hall Effect triggers. Those are manufacturer specifications, not proof that the thumbsticks themselves use Hall Effect sensors: Backbone identifies the sticks as ALPS, and the Hall Effect claim applies to the triggers. The distinction matters because Hall Effect triggers do not remove the potential for conventional analog-stick wear or drift. Backbone’s Pro page lists the controls; Tom’s Guide’s review also notes the lack of Hall Effect sticks.
Those larger controls and grips are the practical case for Pro. They should appeal to players who find compact phone controllers cramped, especially during longer sessions or games that rely on precise stick input. The trade-off is bulk: the larger body is less pocketable than Backbone One. Without independent hands-on measurements here, claims about exact stick precision, button noise, trigger resistance or comfort for every hand size would go beyond what the available evidence establishes.

USB-C handheld play or Bluetooth wireless
Direct USB-C
In handheld mode, the phone connects directly through USB-C. This is the natural setup for playing on the phone itself, and it avoids needing to charge the controller for that use. A direct connection is also the more straightforward choice when you want controller input without a Bluetooth pairing step. It does not guarantee zero latency; game performance and the phone still matter.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is the feature that gives Pro a broader role. It can be used with supported tablets, PCs, TVs, Macs and other compatible screens, letting you set the phone aside or use the controller for a larger-screen session. The value depends on whether you will actually use those setups: a phone-only player pays for a wireless capability that may see little use. Wireless play also means keeping the controller charged and pairing it with the target device.
Cloud and remote-play input still travels through the network and the relevant game service. A controller cannot compensate for congested Wi-Fi, cellular instability or a distant server, so network quality can matter more to responsiveness than the difference between this controller and a cheaper one.
Games, remote play and cloud gaming
Backbone Pro supplies controller input; it does not supply games, a console or cloud-service access. Compatibility depends on the game, platform and device. A game that expects touch controls will not automatically become controller-compatible just because Pro is connected.

- Cloud gaming: Services such as Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna may work through compatible apps or browsers that recognize controller input. A service subscription or other entitlement may be required, and the controller does not provide it.
The Backbone app can organize or launch services, but it is separate from the underlying game and streaming services. See Backbone’s product page for its platform positioning.
Backbone App and Backbone+: what is free
You do not need Backbone+ for ordinary gameplay or core controller functions. Backbone’s support documentation says the free app includes firmware updates, joystick calibration, button testing and remapping; compatible games can also be played without the app or a subscription. Backbone’s support page explains the free app and subscription distinction.
Backbone+ is an optional ecosystem subscription. Depending on availability and plan, its extras include a unified launcher and library, recommendations, voice and text chat, recording and editing, cloud storage, Twitch streaming, emulator access, cloud-service integration, perks and some Android TouchSync features. The feature list is on Backbone’s Backbone+ page, with membership details in its membership support article.
Backbone’s official information directs customers to the App Store price and notes regional variation. Reviews commonly report about $39.99 per year, but that is not a universal official price; check the live offer in the app for your region before subscribing. The hardware can be judged separately from these extras: subscription features are not prerequisites for using the controller.

Compatibility and case fit need checking
The Pro is USB-C, so Lightning iPhones are not compatible. Backbone’s Pro FAQ lists iOS 15 or later and Android 10 or later, while the separate Xbox Edition page lists different OS requirements. These pages do not establish one universal requirement for every edition, device and feature. Check the exact model against Backbone’s current Pro compatibility list before buying. The Xbox Edition’s listing is at Xbox’s product page.
Case support is selective, not universal. A phone’s dimensions, case thickness, camera bump and adapter configuration can affect whether it fits. Verify the exact phone-and-case combination on Backbone’s compatibility list rather than assuming a case-compatible design will accommodate yours. The larger controller may also be inconvenient with bulky rugged cases, grips or external cooling accessories.

US prices below are list prices seen on Backbone’s catalog on August 18, 2026; promotions and regional pricing may differ. The Pro-versus-One features are drawn from Backbone’s comparison page and its product catalog.
| Feature | Backbone Pro | Backbone One |
|---|---|---|
| US list price | $169.99 | From $99.99 |
| Connection | USB-C handheld and Bluetooth wireless | USB-C or Lightning, depending on model |
| Battery | Internal battery; rated up to 40 hours wirelessly by Backbone | No internal battery; powered by connected phone |
| Controls | Full-size ALPS joysticks and rear buttons | Smaller, slimmer controls |
| Form factor | Larger, more substantial grip | Compact and more portable |
| Remapping | Supported | Supported through the app |
| Best suited to | Longer sessions and multi-screen use | Phone-first gaming and portability |
At these US list prices, Pro costs about $70 more than the entry Backbone One. That premium buys a larger grip, fuller-size controls, rear buttons, Bluetooth and a battery—not a proportionate increase in basic phone-game functionality. If you will play almost exclusively on a phone, One’s compactness and lower cost are stronger advantages than Pro’s extra features.

What ownership costs beyond the controller
The standard Pro is listed at $169.99 US, the Xbox Edition at $179.99, and Backbone’s Universal Carrying Case at $29.99. The case is separate, not included. These prices were listed in Backbone’s catalog on August 18, 2026; check the current catalog for changes.
| Purchase | Price seen August 18, 2026 (US) |
|---|---|
| Backbone Pro | $169.99 |
| Backbone Pro Xbox Edition | $179.99 |
| Universal Carrying Case | $29.99 |
| Pro plus case | $199.98 before tax |
| Pro, case and one year of Backbone+ at the commonly reported rate | About $239.97 before tax; subscription price varies by region and storefront |
That last total is illustrative, not a required cost: Backbone+ is optional, and its current price should be confirmed in-app. You may also need separate access to Xbox, GeForce NOW, PlayStation or other game services. The controller does not include their games or subscriptions.
Who should buy Backbone Pro?
Buy it if comfort and flexibility matter more than value
- You regularly play long sessions and want a larger grip and thumbsticks than compact telescopic controllers offer.
- You will make real use of Bluetooth across a phone, tablet, PC or TV, rather than playing only with a phone mounted in the controller.
- You want rear buttons and app-based remapping in a telescopic design.
- You have a compatible USB-C device and have checked that your case fits.
- You are comfortable paying for refinement and convenience rather than chasing the lowest cost per feature.
Choose Backbone One if you are phone-first
- You mainly want a controller attached to your phone and do not need wireless use away from it.
- You value a lighter, more compact design, or want to spend about $70 less at the listed US prices.
- Your sessions are short or moderate and smaller controls are acceptable.
Consider a different controller for specific priorities
If Hall Effect thumbsticks are a priority, seek a model whose manufacturer explicitly specifies Hall Effect sticks; Pro’s listed Hall Effect feature is on its triggers. A less expensive telescopic controller may suit buyers focused on value, while a conventional Bluetooth gamepad may make more sense if phone mounting is unnecessary. The GameSir, Razer and 8BitDo catalogs show relevant product categories, but prices and device compatibility vary and should be checked for the specific model.
Verdict
Backbone Pro’s strongest case is comfort plus flexibility: it combines fuller-size controls and a larger grip with direct USB-C phone play and Bluetooth use on other supported screens. That makes it a compelling premium choice for multi-device players and a poor-value choice for many casual phone gamers. If you will not use wireless mode or the more substantial controls, save the difference and choose Backbone One; if you will, Pro’s premium has a clear purpose, even if it remains expensive.
