Backbone announced the Backbone Pro | XBOX Edition on November 12, 2025: a Backbone-made controller with Xbox branding, Xbox integration and Designed for Xbox positioning. The U.S. price was $179.99 when checked in August 2026. It is a premium USB-C phone controller that can also work wirelessly with PCs, tablets, TVs and other Bluetooth devices.
That distinction matters. The Pro Xbox Edition does not replace an Xbox Wireless Controller for direct console play, and it does not provide Xbox games by itself. Its value comes from combining a telescopic phone design with a full-size Bluetooth controller.
What was actually announced?
Backbone, not Microsoft’s Xbox hardware division, announced the product and sells it through Backbone, Best Buy and Amazon, subject to regional availability. Xbox supplies the branding, platform relationship and software-facing integration; Backbone supplies the hardware.
The translucent green shell, Xbox-style button labels and Xbox presentation distinguish this edition from the regular Backbone Pro. The underlying controller remains cross-platform: Backbone also lists support for PlayStation, Steam, native mobile games and other cloud services.

How the Backbone Pro Xbox Edition works
USB-C handheld mode
Slide a compatible USB-C phone into the controller and connect it through the built-in USB-C plug. Backbone positions this as its lowest-latency mode, and the controller does not need to be charged for ordinary wired phone play. It is the same basic arrangement used by telescopic controllers such as the Backbone One or Razer Kishi, but with larger controls and a more substantial grip.
Bluetooth wireless mode
Pair the Pro over Bluetooth and the phone no longer has to sit between the controller halves. You can use it with a tablet, PC, laptop, smart TV, Meta Quest headset or another compatible screen. Backbone advertises up to 40 hours of wireless battery life; actual runtime varies with use and is a manufacturer claim.
Controls and audio
- Full-size ALPS thumbsticks.
- Hall-effect triggers.
- Rear buttons and remappable controls through the Backbone app.
- Control profiles for different games or platforms.
- 3.5mm headset jack, plus Bluetooth audio through the connected device.
The official specifications identify the thumbsticks as ALPS and the triggers as Hall-effect. They do not establish that the thumbsticks themselves use Hall-effect sensors.
What Xbox features do you get?
Xbox Cloud Gaming
The controller works with Xbox Cloud Gaming when you have an eligible Game Pass plan and are in a supported region. The hardware does not include permanent cloud access or a game library. The included one-month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate offer is promotional, limited to eligible new Ultimate members and governed by the redemption terms shown at purchase or activation. Backbone’s product page and announcement display different offer-expiration information, so use the current redemption page and Xbox subscription terms rather than relying on a date printed elsewhere.

You do not need Backbone+ to use Xbox Cloud Gaming through supported Xbox software.
Xbox Remote Play
Remote Play streams games from your own Xbox console. You must configure the console for remote features and sign in with a supported Xbox account and app setup. It is different from Cloud Gaming: Remote Play needs your console and its network connection, while Cloud Gaming streams from Microsoft’s servers. Phone connectivity, console upload performance and network latency determine the result.
What it cannot do
The Pro Xbox Edition is not a normal Xbox console gamepad that connects directly to an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One as a replacement controller. Its Xbox relationship primarily concerns mobile, cloud and remote-play use, not local console control.

Phone compatibility and operating-system requirements
Backbone’s Pro FAQ lists iOS 15 or later for iPhones and Android 10 or later for Android phones. The Pro uses USB-C, so Lightning iPhones—including iPhone 14 and earlier models with Lightning ports—are incompatible. USB-C alone is not a guarantee of fit: phone width, camera bumps, USB-C-port placement and protective cases can prevent the connector from lining up.
- Check Backbone’s compatibility and case lists for your exact phone.
- Remove a thick case temporarily when testing the fit.
- Use any supplied magnetic adapters where the compatibility guide calls for them.
- Never force the USB-C plug into a misaligned phone.
Backbone’s product page references iPhone 15, 16 and 17 families and popular Android manufacturers, but model-by-model mechanical compatibility remains the deciding factor.

Games and services that work
Native mobile games
Any App Store or Google Play game with physical-controller support can use the Pro. Backbone specifically lists Minecraft, Roblox, Genshin Impact, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, Apple Arcade titles and Netflix Games. A game must implement controller input; Xbox branding does not add support to a title that accepts touch controls only.
Other streaming and remote-play platforms
Backbone lists Steam Link, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna, PlayStation Remote Play and other controller-compatible apps, as well as native PC and tablet gaming. Platform support differs by operating system. For example, Backbone’s FAQ says PlayStation Remote Play is not officially available on Android in this context.

The cheaper model is not simply an older version of the same idea. The central difference is wireless, multi-screen versatility versus inexpensive plug-in portability. Backbone also lists the non-Xbox Backbone Pro at $169.99 for buyers who want the hardware without Xbox styling; current catalog prices are shown at Backbone’s product catalog.

Backbone+ is optional. You can use the controller with compatible games and access Xbox Cloud Gaming or Xbox Remote Play through Xbox software without paying for Backbone’s subscription. Backbone+ may add app organization, recommendations, perks, streaming features and other enhancements. Opening the app can start a free trial, so check its renewal terms and cancel before conversion if you do not want a paid plan.
The one-month Game Pass Ultimate code is also optional and temporary. Eligibility is generally limited to new Ultimate members, and the membership continues under the offer’s renewal terms unless canceled. It does not guarantee access to every Xbox game; catalog, regional and account conditions change.

Common problems and fixes
The phone does not fit
- Remove the case and retry.
- Confirm the exact model in Backbone’s compatibility list.
- Check camera-bump clearance, phone dimensions and port alignment.
- Use the recommended adapter, if supplied.
- If the phone remains incompatible, use a Bluetooth controller with a phone mount instead of forcing the connector.
A game ignores the controller
Confirm that the title supports physical controllers on your operating system, enable controller input in its settings, update the game, connect the controller before launching and use the native app rather than a browser page where required.
Cloud Gaming fails to start
Verify Game Pass eligibility, supported-region access, Xbox sign-in, network quality and the game’s current catalog availability. The correct browser, Xbox app or service path can change, so follow the current Xbox instructions.
Remote Play is confused with Cloud Gaming
Remote Play requires a configured Xbox console and streams from it. Cloud Gaming does not require your own console but does require a supported Game Pass plan and region.
Who should buy it?
Good reasons to buy
- You have a compatible USB-C phone and regularly use Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play.
- You want one controller for a phone, PC, tablet and TV.
- You prefer full-size grips, rear buttons and remappable controls for longer sessions.
- You value Xbox styling but also play across PlayStation, Steam or other services.
Reasons to skip it
- You own a Lightning iPhone.
- You only need a small wired phone controller; the Backbone One Xbox Edition costs $109.99 at the same catalog check.
- You will never use Bluetooth or another screen.
- Your case or phone is mechanically incompatible.
- You expect a direct Xbox-console replacement controller.
- You already own an Xbox Wireless Controller and only need a phone clip or occasional mobile play.
Verdict
The Backbone Pro Xbox Edition is best understood as a premium multi-platform controller with Xbox styling, not as a Microsoft-built handheld or a new console controller. At $179.99, its premium pays for Bluetooth operation, larger controls, rear buttons and the ability to move between a USB-C phone and other screens. If those features match how you play, it is the more capable Backbone option; if you mainly want inexpensive phone-mounted play, the $109.99 Backbone One Xbox Edition or an existing Bluetooth controller is the better value.
