“Mod is out of date, waiting for an update” means your installed BakkesMod build does not yet match the current Rocket League build. The warning normally appears after Rocket League has been patched and before a compatible BakkesMod release is available. It is a version-compatibility state, not evidence that your installation is damaged. Reinstalling the same BakkesMod build cannot create the missing compatibility update.
Close both programs, confirm that Rocket League and BakkesMod are fully updated, and wait for the compatibility release if Rocket League changed recently. Linux and Steam Deck users have an additional documented safe-mode workaround, but it bypasses a protection check and does not update BakkesMod. For online play, disable BakkesMod: Slipstream’s current documentation describes BakkesMod as a deprecated legacy feature blocked by Easy Anti-Cheat and limits enabled use to offline modes.

What the warning actually says
BakkesMod loads against a particular Rocket League game build. When Rocket League updates, internal files, interfaces or protections can change. Until BakkesMod is rebuilt or otherwise made compatible with that new build, its injector cannot safely treat the game as supported. The launcher therefore displays the exact message “Mod is out of date, waiting for an update”.

The message does not identify a missing Windows component, a corrupt save, a bad controller or a failed internet connection. It also does not mean that repeatedly uninstalling and reinstalling BakkesMod will force an update. If the only available installer contains the old build, reinstalling simply puts the old build back on the computer.

Why it often appears suddenly
Rocket League can update while you are away from the game or while its launcher is open. BakkesMod may have worked normally the previous day, then refuse to inject after Rocket League changes version. That timing is expected when one application updates before the other. The practical question is not “How do I repair every file?” but “Has a compatible BakkesMod release been published yet?”
First response after a Rocket League update
- Exit Rocket League completely. Close the game rather than leaving it suspended or running in the background.
- Exit BakkesMod. Start it again only after the game launcher has finished checking for updates.
- Check Rocket League for pending patches. Allow the platform or launcher to complete the update, including any file verification it performs automatically.
- Check BakkesMod for its current release. If its compatibility update has not arrived, keep the existing installation and wait rather than cycling through reinstalls.
- Test after both sides are current. Launch Rocket League normally, then start BakkesMod as you ordinarily do. A remaining warning means the builds still do not match, not that a new reinstall is necessarily required.
A short delay after a major Rocket League update is therefore a normal part of the support cycle. The warning should be treated as a compatibility hold until the BakkesMod side catches up.
Linux and Steam Deck: keep both programs in the same Proton or Wine environment
On Linux, BakkesMod relies on the same Wine/Proton prefix and launcher environment as Rocket League. BakkesLinux’s setup guide identifies Rocket League’s Steam AppID as 252950 and explains how to locate the prefix used for the game. If BakkesMod is installed into a different prefix, or started through a different launcher context, the game and mod are not sharing the environment in which injection is expected to occur.
Use one consistent environment
- Identify the prefix for AppID 252950. Use the prefix associated with your Steam Rocket League installation, following the BakkesLinux setup guidance.
- Install or configure BakkesMod in that prefix. Do not mix a prefix used by one launcher with a separate prefix used by another.
- Start Rocket League through the same launcher environment. The Proton/Wine context that runs the game must be the context in which BakkesMod is configured.
- Launch BakkesMod after Rocket League. BakkesLinux documents starting the mod after the game in that shared environment.
Using the correct prefix can resolve an environment mismatch, but it cannot manufacture a compatibility release. If Rocket League has just updated and the warning is still shown in the right prefix, the underlying version gap remains.

The documented safe-mode workaround
For a Linux or Proton setup that continues to show the warning, BakkesLinux documents a workaround inside BakkesMod:
- Open BakkesMod Settings.
- Find Enable safe mode.
- Disable that setting.
- Accept the warning before injection when prompted.
This bypasses a protection check. It does not update BakkesMod or prove that the current build is compatible with the latest Rocket League build. Use it only when you understand the guide’s warning and accept the risk of injecting an out-of-date mod. If you want the normal safety path, leave safe mode enabled and wait for the official compatibility update instead.
Slipstream users: update through the game manager first
Slipstream can bypass the Epic Games Launcher when launching Rocket League, but that does not remove the game manager’s role in installing and updating the game. A launcher shortcut that starts the game is not necessarily the component that applies Rocket League patches.

Fix a version-mismatch error
- Close Rocket League and Slipstream.
- Open the Epic Games Launcher or Heroic, depending on which manager owns your installation.
- Allow Rocket League to download and apply its pending patch completely.
- After the manager reports that the game is current, close it if desired.
- Open Slipstream again and launch Rocket League.
If Slipstream reports a version mismatch, returning to Slipstream repeatedly will not patch the game. The Epic Games Launcher or Heroic game manager must perform that update first.

Can you use BakkesMod online?
Current Slipstream documentation labels BakkesMod a legacy and deprecated feature, says it is blocked by Easy Anti-Cheat, and restricts enabled BakkesMod use to offline Free Play, Replays and Custom Training. That makes the safe online choice straightforward: disable BakkesMod before joining online play.
What to do before an online match
- Exit BakkesMod or disable its injection.
- Start Rocket League through the supported game path for your installation.
- Do not treat the Linux safe-mode workaround as an online-play fix. It bypasses a check; it does not change the documented online restriction.
Keeping the mod enabled for an offline session is a different decision from keeping it enabled when connecting to online services. The offline allowance does not extend to online matches, and the out-of-date warning is not a reason to test an unverified build online.
Choose the appropriate response
| Option | When it fits | What you gain | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wait for the official compatibility update | Rocket League updated recently, or you want the normal supported path | Preserves the ordinary safety check and avoids injecting an unmatched build | BakkesMod features remain unavailable until a compatible release exists |
| Disable safe mode on Linux/Proton | Your Linux setup follows the correct prefix and you understand the documented warning | May permit injection in that environment | Bypasses a protection check and does not update the mod; compatibility is not guaranteed |
| Disable BakkesMod for online play | You need to join online services or a competitive match | Restores the documented supported online path | BakkesMod features are unavailable while disabled |
The table separates two issues that are easy to conflate. Waiting addresses the version gap. The Linux setting changes a safety check. Disabling the mod addresses online compatibility. None of these actions turns an old BakkesMod build into a new one.
Diagnose the common symptoms
The warning appeared immediately after a Rocket League patch
This pattern points to the expected compatibility delay. Confirm that Rocket League finished updating, then wait for BakkesMod’s compatible release. Reinstalling before that release exists is unlikely to change the result.

Rocket League is current, but BakkesMod still says it is out of date
Check whether BakkesMod itself has received an update. “Rocket League is current” only confirms one side of the pairing. The mod must also contain support for that exact game build.
The warning appears only on Linux or Steam Deck
Verify that Rocket League and BakkesMod use the same Wine/Proton prefix and launcher environment, using Steam AppID 252950 to identify the game’s prefix. Start the mod after Rocket League. If the environment is correct and the warning persists, decide whether to remain in safe mode and wait or use the documented safe-mode bypass with its stated risk.
Slipstream says the game versions do not match
Open Epic Games Launcher or Heroic and let the game manager apply the Rocket League patch. Slipstream bypasses that launcher for starting the game; it does not replace the manager’s update function.

Disable BakkesMod before connecting. The current Slipstream guidance restricts enabled BakkesMod use to offline modes and describes the feature as blocked by Easy Anti-Cheat.
What not to do
- Do not keep reinstalling in the hope of creating an update. An installer cannot add compatibility that its release does not contain.
- Do not assume a successful launch proves online support. A mod that injects in Free Play may still be unsuitable for online services.
- Do not mix prefixes or launcher contexts on Linux. The game and mod need the same Wine/Proton environment.
- Do not confuse Slipstream’s launch shortcut with the update mechanism. Use Epic Games Launcher or Heroic when the game itself needs a patch.
- Do not interpret the safe-mode bypass as a repair. It changes the protection check only; it leaves the version relationship unchanged.
A compact checklist
- Record whether Rocket League updated just before the warning appeared.
- Close Rocket League and BakkesMod fully.
- Complete Rocket League’s update in its owning launcher.
- Check for a compatible BakkesMod release.
- On Linux or Steam Deck, confirm the shared Wine/Proton prefix for AppID 252950.
- Launch BakkesMod after Rocket League in that same environment.
- If using Slipstream, patch through Epic Games Launcher or Heroic before launching through Slipstream again.
- For online play, disable BakkesMod rather than attempting to work around the warning.
Following this order prevents three separate problems—an unpatched game, a mismatched Linux environment and an unsupported online configuration—from being mistaken for one another.
