For a flexible shortlist, Investment, Coupon, Rare, Uncommon, Polychrome, Negative, Economy, Voucher, Top-up, and Double are strong candidates—but their value changes with your cash, Joker build, and plans for the next shop.
What tags do—and what skipping costs
Tags are rewards for skipping a Small or Big Blind. You get the tag instead of playing that blind, which means giving up its reward and the cash-out opportunities from defeating it. There are 24 tags, they are equally weighted, and the same tag can appear more than once in an ante, according to the Balatro systems reference.

Timing matters: some tags pay immediately, while others wait for the next shop, blind choice, round, or a later event. The ranking below is a strategic shortlist based on flexibility and mechanics, not a measured win-rate tier list. The mechanics references document game behavior but are not official developer documentation; one identifies game data version 1.0.1o-FULL, and the current live game version is not established here.
The 10 best tags for a flexible run
-
Investment Tag
Pays $25 after you defeat the next Boss Blind. Early in a run, that delayed cash can fund several later shop choices. It is a poor fit if you doubt you can reach the payout. Tag mechanics

Balatro: Special Edition - For Nintendo Switch- 150 Jokers, each with their own unique abilities.
- 15 Decks with distinct modifiers to choose from for each run.
- 5 potential variants of each Joker which add further abilities.
- 22 Tarot cards variants that can enhance your regular playing cards.
- 11 Planet cards that help level up your possible poker hands.
-
Coupon Tag
Makes the initial cards and booster packs in the next shop free. It offers flexibility across several kinds of shop items, but pays off most when that shop has something useful to take. Tag mechanics
-
Rare Tag
Creates a free Rare Joker in the next shop. It can reshape a run, but rarity alone does not make a Joker fit your build; you also need room to use it. Tag mechanics and the systems reference
-
Uncommon Tag
Creates a free Uncommon Joker in the next shop. As with Rare Tag, judge the Joker by how it supports your current plan rather than by its rarity. Tag mechanics and the systems reference
Rank #2
Balatro Special Edition - Compatible for NS - UK PAL- UK e-store account may be required for any online features
-
Polychrome Tag
Makes the next eligible base-edition shop Joker free and Polychrome. The payoff depends on seeing a useful eligible Joker; edition tags can be held until one appears. Tag mechanics and the systems reference
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Negative Tag
Makes the next eligible base-edition shop Joker free and Negative, potentially adding a Joker without using an ordinary slot. Its value still depends on whether the offered Joker helps your run. Tag mechanics and the systems reference
-
Economy Tag
Doubles your current money, up to a $40 increase. It is strongest when you already have cash to multiply; the systems reference says a negative balance is not doubled, effectively wasting the tag. Tag mechanics and the systems reference
Rank #3
Hello Neighbor - Nintendo Switch- STEALTH horror
- Neighbors AI learns your tactics and evolves
- Interactive environment
- Extremely tense, but family-friendly gameplay
- Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) Content Description: Mild violence
-
Voucher Tag
Adds one Voucher to the next shop. This is an extra offer, not a free redemption, so it suits a run that can afford the purchase and would benefit from the available Voucher. Tag mechanics
-
Top-up Tag
Immediately creates up to two Common Jokers if you have room. It can add early options quickly, but the available Joker slots and the generated effects determine whether those options help. Tag mechanics and the systems reference

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Double Tag
Copies the next selected tag, but not another Double Tag. It is conditional value: hold it for an appealing future tag if you can wait. Multiple held Double Tags each copy the selected tag; they do not recursively double a doubled result. Tag mechanics and the systems reference
Rank #4

Situational tags that can beat the shortlist
- Handy Tag: pays $1 per hand played so far in the run. Its value rises with the number of hands already played.
- Garbage Tag: pays $1 per unused discard, making it more attractive when you have saved discards.
- Speed Tag: pays $5 for every Blind skipped so far, including the blind skipped to take this tag. Earlier skips increase its payout.
- Orbital Tag: upgrades a specified random Poker Hand by three levels. It is most relevant when that hand fits your scoring plan.
- Voucher Tag and Double Tag: may be more appealing in a long Endless run than when your immediate goal is clearing Ante 8; that is a strategic distinction, not a universal ranking.
Tag interactions can also change the calculation when you bank them: tags are held until used, edition tags queue for eligible Jokers, Investment and Speed stack additively, Voucher tags add Vouchers until the eligible pool is exhausted, and Juggle stacks hand size. Systems reference
How to decide whether to skip
Compare the tag with the blind and shop opportunity you are giving up. A useful choice usually comes down to four questions:
Quick Recap
- When does it trigger, and can the run reach that point? A delayed payout is less dependable than an immediate one if the next Boss Blind is a serious risk.
- What does the run need now? Cash, scoring support, or another Joker can matter more than a powerful reward that arrives too late.
- Does it fit your build? A free or upgraded Joker is not automatically useful, and an Orbital upgrade only helps if you can score the named hand.
- What are you surrendering? Skipping means foregoing the blind’s reward and cash-out lines, so weigh the tag against the value of playing through.
