For your next Baldur’s Gate 3 run, these 10 subclasses are worth considering if you want a combat loop or character fantasy that feels distinct. “Underrated” here means under-discussed options with a clear payoff—not a claim that they are among the game’s least-picked subclasses. No comprehensive pick-rate survey establishes that ranking.

Patch 8 added 12 subclasses, one for each class. This list focuses on 10 of them, weighing when the subclass becomes available, what it does in a fight, whether it emphasizes party support or personal damage and control, and what kind of character it suits. The two Patch 8 additions not covered below are Oath of the Crown Paladin and Bladesinging Wizard.

Which underrated subclass should you pick?

Start with the kind of turn you want to take. These options offer very different payoffs: some strengthen allies, some add ranged or spell-based control, and others center on mobility, throwing, or a memorable role-play premise. Subclass unlock levels vary by class, so use the timing below as a guide rather than assuming every class chooses at the same level.

Subclass Class Choice timing Best fit
Circle of Stars Druid Level 2 A flexible combat-and-healing identity
Swarmkeeper Ranger Level 3 Distinctive swarm effects and damage flavors
Swashbuckler Rogue Level 3 A mobile, dirty-fighting Rogue
Arcane Archer Fighter Level 3 Ranged attacks with magical effects
College of Glamour Bard Not stated in the cited subclass descriptions Ally support and enemy control
Path of Giants Barbarian Not stated in the cited subclass descriptions A strength- and throwing-focused Barbarian
Death Domain Cleric Not stated in the cited subclass descriptions Necrotic damage and corpse-based effects
Way of the Drunken Master Monk Level 3 Ki-fueled movement and alcohol-themed tricks
Shadow Magic Sorcerer Not stated in the cited subclass descriptions Shadow teleportation and enemy control
Hexblade Warlock Not stated in the cited subclass descriptions A cursed-weapon and spectre-summoning fantasy

Larian’s Patch 8 announcements describe these subclass features; PC Gamer’s Patch 8 guide is useful additional context for Rogue and Warlock builds. The level entries above are included where the official descriptions specify them.

1. Circle of Stars Druid: choose an early, flexible identity

At level 2, a Circle of Stars Druid can assume Starry Form, gaining new abilities and bonuses to combat and healing. That gives the subclass an early distinction and a way to lean into both helping the party and contributing directly in a fight. Pick it if you want a Druid whose character concept and combat form are tied to the stars, rather than a subclass pitch built around one narrow damage trick.

2. Swarmkeeper Ranger: make the swarm part of your attack

Swarmkeeper is a level 3 choice that gives the Ranger three striking swarm expressions: moths for psychic damage, jellyfish for lightning damage, and bees. It is a good fit if you want your attacks to carry a strong creature-and-damage identity instead of feeling like purely conventional ranged weapon turns. The official description highlights these swarm forms; it does not establish a comparative damage ranking against other Ranger options.

3. Swashbuckler Rogue: set up Sneak Attacks through movement

Swashbuckler becomes available at level 3. Larian emphasizes dirty fighting—such as throwing sand to blind enemies—and the ability to move in and out of combat. PC Gamer’s September 2026 guide also points to easier Sneak Attack setup and a bonus-action attack as reasons the subclass has a distinctive playstyle. Consider it if you want a Rogue who feels like a mobile duelist, not just a character waiting for an ally to create an opening.

4. Arcane Archer Fighter: add magical control to ranged attacks

At level 3, an Arcane Archer can use special arrows including Banishing Arrow and Shadow Arrow, and Curved Shot can redirect missed shots. The appeal is a ranged Fighter with more than straightforward weapon damage: the arrows add magical effects, while Curved Shot offers a way to respond when an attack misses. Pick this if you like the reliable martial foundation of a Fighter but want your ranged turns to have a magical twist.

5. College of Glamour Bard: support allies, then dictate enemy movement

College of Glamour combines party support with control. Mantle of Inspiration grants allies 5 temporary hit points, while Mantle of Majesty lets the Bard command charmed enemies to flee, approach, freeze, fall prone, or drop their weapons. Its draw is not just adding damage: it can help the party withstand pressure and make enemies’ positioning or actions less dependable. Choose it if you want your Bard to shape the fight around the group.

6. Path of Giants Barbarian: turn throwing into a character fantasy

Giant’s Rage increases the Barbarian’s size and strength, improves throw attacks, and increases carrying capacity. That makes Path of Giants an unusual fit for a class often imagined as charging in with a weapon: here, throwing is part of the subclass’s identity. Try it if you want a physically imposing Barbarian whose strength shows up in how they handle objects and enemies, not only in close-quarters attacks.

  • Contains Enhanced Editions of Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, & Siege of Dragonspear

  • Baldur's Gate II - Continue a journey started in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition or create an entirely new character in this isometric Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game.
  • Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear - Adds a new chapter to the Bhaalspawn saga. The events occurring between Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II are at last revealed in this 25-hour adventure.

7. Death Domain Cleric: build around necrotic damage and the dead

Death Domain Clerics focus on necrotic damage, gain three necromancy cantrips including Toll the Dead, and can explode nearby corpses. Larian’s announcement says Toll the Dead deals 1–8 damage and scales when its target has already been injured. That specific damage figure belongs to the official announcement; it is not a general damage comparison with other Cleric options. Pick the subclass if a darker divine character and necromantic effects suit your role-play as much as your combat plan.

8. Way of the Drunken Master Monk: make alcohol part of the Ki loop

This level 3 Monk subclass can regain Ki by consuming alcohol, is immune to getting drunk, and can use Sobering Realisation to deal psychic damage and sober enemies. Those mechanics make its flavor more than a costume: drinking can feed the resource loop, while Sobering Realisation turns the theme into a combat effect. Choose it if you want a Monk with an offbeat, chaotic edge rather than a more austere martial fantasy.

9. Shadow Magic Sorcerer: teleport through shadows and lock down a target

Shadow Magic offers shadow teleportation and a Hound of Ill Omen that can trap enemies. That combination points toward mobility and control: reposition with shadow magic, then use the Hound to pressure a foe. It suits players who want a Sorcerer whose dark-magic identity changes where they can be and how an enemy can act, rather than one chosen only for raw spell damage.

10. Hexblade Warlock: make the pact feel like a cursed weapon

Hexblade begins with a bound Hexed Sickle, Maul, or Flail, and cursed enemies can rise as Accursed Spectres. The premise gives the Warlock a concrete weapon-centered identity and a supernatural payoff when a cursed foe falls. PC Gamer’s September 2026 build guide discusses a pure Hexblade build and Patch 8’s Shadow Blade, but neither detail establishes that Hexblade is objectively stronger than other Warlock choices. Choose it for the cursed-weapon fantasy and the prospect of turning defeated enemies into part of the encounter.

When do you choose a subclass?

There is no single level that applies to every class. PC Gamer’s September 2026 guide says most classes choose at level 3, while most spellcasters and Paladins choose at level 1. Larian’s subclass descriptions specifically place Circle of Stars and Bladesinging at level 2, and Arcane Archer, Swarmkeeper, Way of the Drunken Master, and Swashbuckler at level 3. Check your class’s progression when planning a build, especially if you want the subclass identity to shape the opening hours of a run.

What “underrated” means here

This is a recommendation list, not a least-played ranking. The cited sources do not provide a comprehensive subclass pick-rate survey or comparative win-rate statistic, so there is no sound basis for saying which options players overlook most often or which performs best overall. Each pick earns its place through a distinct mechanic, role, or character fantasy that may appeal to someone planning what to roll next.

Patch 8’s 12 additions span all classes: Path of Giants Barbarian, College of Glamour Bard, Death Domain Cleric, Circle of Stars Druid, Arcane Archer Fighter, Way of the Drunken Master Monk, Oath of the Crown Paladin, Swarmkeeper Ranger, Swashbuckler Rogue, Shadow Magic Sorcerer, Hexblade Warlock, and Bladesinging Wizard. Larian described the update as adding new abilities, animations, visual effects, summons, cantrips, and some role-playing reactivity.
