Use this flexible Act 2 checklist to explore the Shadow-Cursed Lands, follow the quests you care about, and avoid crossing the main point of no return before you are ready. The key warning: entering the Shadowfell from the Gauntlet of Shar can make Act One areas inaccessible and advance unfinished Act Two content, so visit Moonrise Towers and finish your chosen side quests first.
How to use this Act 2 checklist
Act Two centers on the Shadow-Cursed Lands, with Last Light Inn, Reithwin Town, Moonrise Towers, and the Gauntlet of Shar as major destinations. Not every quest is available in every run: some depend on earlier choices, and some outcomes conflict with one another. Treat the items below as options to check against your own goals, not a requirement to complete everything. The BG3 Wiki’s Act Two overview and quest list can help you identify which threads are relevant to your run.
Spoiler note: The route and quest names are unavoidable spoilers. The Isobel section flags choice consequences without detailing specific outcomes.
1. Arrive and get protection from the Shadow Curse
Choose an entrance
You can enter the Shadow-Cursed Lands from the Mountain Pass via the Rosymorn Monastery Trail, or from the Underdark via Grymforge. Both routes lead into Act Two; choose based on where you have been and what you want to explore. There is no single order that is right for every playthrough. Secure a way to travel safely
Do not assume ordinary light is enough to protect you everywhere in the curse. Look for a source of protection before pushing deeper: a Moonlantern is one important option, and Last Light Inn can also provide a route to protection depending on your progress and choices. Explore the Ruined Battlefield on the way
- Explore the Ruined Battlefield and its encounters as you travel toward the hub.
- Pick up optional fights and loot if they interest you; neither is a prerequisite for completing Act Two.
- Keep track of unresolved encounters rather than assuming they will wait indefinitely if you later make major story choices.
2. Make the most of Last Light Inn
Talk to the people there before changing the situation
Last Light is a useful hub for conversations, quests, vendors, and leads. Speak with the characters you care about and check what is available before committing to major choices elsewhere. Its later state can depend on what happens in the Isobel encounter.
Choice-dependent: Isobel
Spoilers for the consequences of a major choice: Isobel’s situation can change the fate of the inn and its inhabitants. If you want to see the available conversations and quest hooks at Last Light before resolving that situation, do so first. The resulting outcomes are choice-dependent, so do not treat one version of the inn as inevitable.

Check on Rolan and other rescue threads
- Find Rolan in the Shadows: follow this thread if it is active in your run. GameStegy warns that, in some circumstances, approaching Rolan and then fast-travelling or resting without resolving the encounter can lead to his death. Because this is conditional, treat an active rescue as time-sensitive and handle it before leaving the situation unresolved rather than assuming the warning applies identically to every run. - Wake Art Cullagh: pursue this if the quest is available and you want to follow the story of lifting the Shadow Curse.
- Arabella’s parents: follow up on this thread if it matters to your playthrough.
- Selûnite resistance: investigate the resistance if you want more of the region’s optional story.

3. Sweep Reithwin Town and its optional stories
Visit the town’s major locations
Reithwin has several distinct places to explore. Consider checking the House of Healing, Reithwin Tollhouse, and Waning Moon before you move the central story forward. These stops offer optional encounters and story; you can skip them if they are not a priority.
Decide how much of the Thorm family content to pursue
The Thorm family encounters around Reithwin are optional content. Explore them if you want the extra character and area stories; do not assume that every encounter must be resolved through combat. The Switchblade Gaming Act 2 guide covers optional Reithwin content and approaches.

Follow the ledger thread if it interests you
Punish the Wicked is an optional quest tied to a ledger. It is not required to reach the Act Two finale, so pursue it if you want to follow that side story. The available details and outcomes can depend on how you handle the related characters.
4. Explore the Grand Mausoleum and Gauntlet of Shar—but stop at the threshold
The Grand Mausoleum leads to the Gauntlet of Shar, a major dungeon and a junction for the main story and Shadowheart’s personal story. You can explore the area and make progress on its trials, puzzles, and related objectives before deciding whether to continue. Use the Gauntlet to prepare, not to rush
- Track the Nightsong objective and the associated Shadowheart story.
- Make progress on the trials and puzzles if you want to complete the dungeon.
- Pay attention to Balthazar’s role in the main-story thread.
- Save before the decision point so you can commit only when you are ready for its consequences.
5. Visit Moonrise Towers before entering the Shadowfell
Moonrise is not just the destination for the final confrontation. Infiltrate and explore it while access is still open, talk to the characters relevant to your run, and check its vendors and quest leads. The main-story path involving Ketheric’s relic and Balthazar sits alongside optional interactions, so you can investigate the former without feeling obliged to exhaust every conversation.

Check the prison and rescue opportunities
If you want to rescue the tieflings, Wulbren, or other prisoners, deal with those opportunities before advancing to the final assault. Which prisoners and quest flags apply depends on your run; use an Act Two walkthrough for exact locations and steps rather than relying on a generic checklist. Check conditional character content
Minthara’s presence and possible outcomes at Moonrise depend on earlier choices. If that thread is relevant to your playthrough, check her status while exploring rather than assuming the same encounter or recruitment option is available in every run. Before you proceed, check:
- Have you visited Moonrise and handled the conversations, quests, and rescues you care about?
- Have you explored the parts of Last Light, Reithwin, and the surrounding region you want to see?
- Have you followed up on the Halsin, Thaniel, and Art Cullagh thread if lifting the Shadow Curse is a goal?
- Have you resolved any active Rolan rescue rather than leaving it unfinished?
- Have you completed the companion scenes you want and saved before the Nightsong decision?
- Are you ready for Act One travel to close and Act Two outcomes to advance?
What order should you do Act 2 in?
A practical low-risk order is to secure curse protection, use Last Light as a hub, explore the side locations that interest you, and visit Moonrise while access remains open. You can then explore the Gauntlet and stop before entering the Shadowfell for a final check. This is a risk-reduction route, not a universal optimum: quest availability, companion content, and desired outcomes vary with earlier choices.
If you prefer fewer spoilers, explore each area organically and use the final checklist only when you reach the Gauntlet’s threshold. If you are trying to avoid missing optional content, track the named quest threads as they become available and resolve time-sensitive encounters before resting or travelling away.
