Spoilers for Act Three. Aid the Underduke takes you from the Guild’s fight with Stone Lord thugs in Rivington to a choice between Nine-Fingers Keene’s Guild and the Zhentarim. To recruit Minsc along the way, bring Jaheira, keep her alive, knock Minsc out with non-lethal attacks, and persuade the Emperor to protect him.
Start Aid the Underduke
This Act Three quest can begin in either of two places:
- Rivington’s Western Beach: Speak with Farlin while the Guild is fighting Stone Lord thugs. You can help, respond neutrally, or stand back; the quest reference says this early choice does not change later stages. If you help Farlin’s group and its members survive, Farlin gives you 674 gold.
- Sharess’ Caress: On the ground floor, listen to Earspoon and Borgus Elamin discuss Nine-Fingers. A dialogue or Perception check can point you toward the Guildhall.
Do not confuse the beach encounter with the later Guildhall faction decision: the former does not determine which group can become your ally for the final fight.
Enter the Guildhall and uncover the ambush plan
You can reach the Guildhall through its guarded alley entrance or by taking a sewer route. At the alley, Tusgront and Guild members guard the way. Deception, Intimidation, or Persuasion can get you through; the listed standard checks are DC 20. Jaheira has a special dialogue route, and if you helped Farlin, the Guild recognizes your party as allies.

Get into the Counting House vaults
Talk to Head Clerk Bloris Meadhoney to learn that Head Banker Rakath Glitterbeard took the Stone Lord into the vaults. Dialogue and social or mental checks may be involved. A successful Persuasion, Intimidation, or Deception check can secure a bank pass; Jaheira can lead the conversation and lower the check DC. Alternatively, steal the pass from an upstairs room.

The sequence is 1-3-5-6. The walkthrough also documents two alternatives: achieve a critical lockpick success, or wet the floor in front of the door with Create Water or thrown water and apply lightning damage to electrify it.
Minsc vanishes before you can confront him in the bank, and Bhaalists attack. After the fight, inspect the smashed large vault and pass the Perception check to spot sewer mud. Follow the trail into the sewers.

Follow Minsc into the sewers
Route through the Abandoned Cistern
Cross the pipes over the caustic water, fight the Bhaalists, and reach the sluice valve. If you cannot unstick it with an Athletics check, use the two controls instead: activate the water-level valve, wait about five seconds, then activate the temperature valve. The gate should open.
Alternative route from the surface
North of the Steel Watch Foundry, look for the “Keep Out” garden area. Stand party members on both wall switches at once, or put boxes on them, to open the concealed entrance. A blast mine is just inside; the walkthrough lists DC 15 Perception to spot it and DC 10 Sleight of Hand to disarm it.

Knock Minsc out and recruit him
As you approach Minsc, a cutscene reveals that a Jaheira doppelganger is manipulating him and paying a Zhentarim agent. Minsc remains under the Absolute’s control and attacks with cultists and doppelgangers.
- Bring Jaheira into the encounter. She must have been recruited beforehand and must survive; otherwise, Minsc cannot be recruited.
- Defeat the other enemies, then use non-lethal attacks to knock Minsc unconscious. Make sure non-lethal attacks are enabled before finishing him.
- When the Emperor objects to protecting Minsc, persuade him to do so.
If successful, Minsc can join the party. The dialogue and encounter details may be sensitive to game updates.
Choose the Guild or the Zhentarim
Return to the Guildhall for the faction conflict. If Roah Moonglow—or Boss Friol, if Roah is dead—and Minsc survive, the Zhentarim may offer an alliance to take over the Guild. Accepting sides with the Zhentarim; fighting them supports Nine-Fingers. If key characters died in the earlier battle, the Zhentarim may turn hostile automatically.
| Choice | Final-battle support | Guildhall outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Support Nine-Fingers and the Guild | Guildmaster Keene’s Fixers | The Guild remains in control. |
| Support the Zhentarim | Black Fist Enforcers | The Zhentarim take over the Guildhall. |
| Neither faction is positioned to support you | Neither group aids the final confrontation. | No allied faction outcome. |
The Guild and Zhentarim are mutually exclusive as allies in the final fight, so this is the consequential choice—not which side you helped on the beach. A surviving leader of the faction you support can offer its forces. The sources establish the control and ally outcomes, but neither option is objectively superior; choose the faction and story outcome you prefer.
