Bard comes next for spellcasting and social utility, followed by Warlock and Paladin in a general-purpose ranking. The order changes for weapon-focused builds: Pact of the Blade or Patch 8 Hexblade Warlocks, and Oathbreaker Paladins, can turn Charisma into a combat stat beyond spellcasting.
Which Baldur’s Gate 3 classes use Charisma?
The four classes whose class spellcasting uses Charisma are Bard, Paladin, Sorcerer, and Warlock. For their class spells, Charisma contributes to spell attack rolls and the Difficulty Class (DC) enemies must meet to resist spells. It also governs Deception, Intimidation, Performance, and Persuasion checks; Persuasion can improve trader prices. The game’s description, reproduced by the BG3 Wiki, says Charisma “Improves spellcasting for bards, paladins, sorcerers, and warlocks. Influences traders’ prices.” (BG3 Wiki: Charisma)
How the ranking works
This is a general-purpose ranking of how consistently Charisma supports each class’s defining kit and social utility—not a measured damage tier list or a claim that one class wins every fight. Sorcerer and Bard rely on Charisma for their class spellcasting; Warlock can extend it to weapon attacks through particular features; Paladin’s weapon attacks ordinarily do not use Charisma, though some subclass features add Charisma-based damage.
| Rank | Class | Why Charisma matters | How much depends on build choices? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sorcerer | Central to class spellcasting and the class’s spell-focused combat identity. | Low for its core spellcasting role. |
| 2 | Bard | Supports class spellcasting as well as dialogue and performance skills. | Low for its core spellcasting and social profile. |
| 3 | Warlock | Supports class spells; can also govern weapon attacks with Pact of the Blade or Patch 8 Hexblade. | Weapon scaling depends on pact or subclass features. |
| 4 | Paladin | Supports class spells and can boost melee damage through Oathbreaker’s Aura of Hate. | Weapon damage scaling depends on subclass; ordinary weapon attacks are not universally Charisma-based. |
1. Sorcerer: the most consistent Charisma investment
Sorcerer takes the top spot because spellcasting is central to its identity, and Charisma directly supports the class’s spell attacks and spell save DC. Investing in Charisma therefore reinforces the class’s defining combat toolkit without requiring a particular pact, subclass, or weapon feature. It also naturally supports the four Charisma skills and Persuasion’s potential effect on trader prices.

2. Bard: spellcasting with a broad social payoff
Bard uses Charisma for class spellcasting and benefits from the same dialogue and trader interactions as the other Charisma classes. Performance is an especially natural skill fit, alongside Deception, Intimidation, and Persuasion. That combination gives Charisma a broad spellcasting and noncombat role. Patch 8 added College of Glamour, but the ranking here concerns the class’s general Charisma use rather than a subclass power comparison. (BG3 Wiki: Patch 8 notes)
3. Warlock: strong Charisma weapon builds, with feature-dependent scaling
Warlock’s class spells use Charisma. It can also use Charisma for weapon attacks, but that extra combat payoff depends on the build. With Pact of the Blade, the pact weapon uses Charisma rather than Strength or Dexterity for attack and damage modifiers. Deepened Pact grants an extra attack at Warlock level 5. Patch 8 Hexblade
Patch 8 added the Hexblade subclass. Its Bind Hexed Weapon lets attacks with weapons the character is proficient with use Charisma instead of Strength or Dexterity. That provides another Charisma-based weapon route, separate from treating Pact of the Blade as the only option. The general ranking puts Warlock below Bard because this broader weapon payoff is feature-dependent, not universal to every Warlock build. (BG3 Wiki: The Hexblade; Patch 8 notes)
4. Paladin: Charisma matters, but not to every weapon attack
Paladin uses Charisma for class spellcasting and social checks, but its ordinary weapon attacks are not universally Charisma-based. That makes Charisma less consistently tied to the whole class than it is for Sorcerer or Bard. Oathbreaker is a notable exception for melee damage: Aura of Hate adds the Paladin’s Charisma modifier to melee weapon damage for the Paladin and nearby fiends and undead. This is meaningful subclass-specific scaling, not a rule for every Paladin. (BG3 Wiki: Oathbreaker)

Which class should you choose for a Charisma-focused build?
- Choose Sorcerer if you want Charisma to support a spell-focused class from the outset.
- Choose Bard if you want Charisma to pair class spellcasting with social and performance utility.
- Choose Warlock if you want Charisma-based spellcasting and may also want weapon attacks to use Charisma through Pact of the Blade or Hexblade.
- Choose Oathbreaker Paladin if the specific appeal is adding Charisma to melee weapon damage through Aura of Hate.
If weapon attacks are your main priority, compare the specific Warlock pact or subclass and Paladin oath rather than relying on the general ranking. The ranking measures consistency across the class, not the ceiling of a particular build.
How to tell which ability a spell uses
Do not assume every spell on a multiclass character uses one shared spellcasting ability. Class spells use the ability associated with the class that granted the spell. Spells cast from items, scrolls, and some other non-class sources can instead use the spellcasting ability of the last class in which the character took a first level, so multiclass level order can matter for those sources. (BG3 Wiki: Item spellcasting ability)
