For a straightforward Arcane Archer build in Baldur’s Gate 3, play Fighter through level 12, choose the Archery fighting style, and focus on Dexterity. Improve Dexterity early, then take Sharpshooter when you can manage its accuracy penalty. The subclass is part of the base game, not a mod: Larian added it in Patch 8, released April 15, 2025 (Larian’s Patch 8 announcement; BG3 Wiki’s Patch 8 entry).
Why take Fighter to level 12?
A pure Fighter progression reaches Arcane Archer at level 3, Improved Extra Attack at level 11, and another feat at level 12. Improved Extra Attack lets you make three attacks per action, giving this route a strong martial payoff without delaying the subclass’s defining abilities.
Fighter 12 is a practical, subclass-focused recommendation—not a claim that it is mathematically best for every party, difficulty, or play style. Larian described the subclass as one that lets you weave magic into attacks and give archery a supernatural quality (Patch 8 announcement).

Abilities: prioritize Dexterity, keep Constitution adequate
Dexterity is the priority for a ranged-weapon-focused Arcane Archer. Constitution helps the character survive when enemies close the distance. One published starting spread is Strength 16, Dexterity 16, Constitution 14, Intelligence 8, Wisdom 10, and Charisma 10; it uses Ability Improvements at Fighter levels 4 and 6 to raise Dexterity (TheGamer’s build guide).

That spread is an example, not a requirement. With Intelligence 8, this setup favors weapon attacks over Arcane Shots that call for saving throws; do not treat it as a way to maximize every shot’s save DC.

Ability Improvement
Raising Dexterity at levels 4 and 6 is the straightforward early plan. It supports the build’s primary ranged attacks before you add a feat with a more situational trade-off.

Sharpshooter
Sharpshooter trades a -5 penalty to attack rolls for +10 ranged damage. It is not an automatic toggle: use it when your hit chance can absorb the penalty, and switch it off when accuracy matters more than the damage bonus.
Level 12 choice
The cited build guide lists Savage Attacker or whichever of Sharpshooter and the second Dexterity improvement you did not take at level 8. The better fit depends on the choices made earlier and the character’s needs.

Arcane Shots: spend them on the encounter
Arcane Arrows replenish on a Short or Long Rest. The subclass starts at level 3 with four arrows and three chosen shots, rises to seven arrows and four shots at level 7, and reaches ten arrows and five shots at level 10 (BG3 Wiki’s Arcane Archer reference). These are limited-use tools, not a rotation you need to follow every fight.
- Burting Arrow: A choice for clustered enemies; the cited guide describes force damage around the impact point (TheGamer’s build guide).
- Grasping Arrow: Use it to punish movement and limit a target’s mobility.
- Piercing Arrow: Look for lined-up enemies so positioning can help you get value from the shot.
- Seeking Arrow: Consider it at level 7 when you want to focus on an important target.
- Shadow Arrow: Consider it at level 10 for damage and a chance to blind.

Level 7 features
Curving Shot uses a Bonus Action to redirect a missed magical ranged attack to the next closest target. Magic Arrow makes ranged attacks count as magical to overcome resistance. Treat Curving Shot as a way to salvage a miss when another target is available, rather than as a replacement for managing accuracy.

There is no required equipment set. The cited guide names Gloves of Archery for ranged damage and Gandrel’s Aspiration or The Joltshooter as bow options for earlier play; it lists Gontr Mael as a late-game ranged option (TheGamer’s build guide). These are optional loot choices, not items you need to buy or obtain to make the build work.

- Control and status effects: Consider effects that complement your Arcane Shots or give you another way to influence a fight.
- Positioning and defense: Ranged attacks benefit from choosing useful firing positions, while defensive options help if enemies reach you.
