A practical Swashbuckler build in Baldur’s Gate 3 is Hexblade Warlock 1 / Swashbuckler Rogue 11, following PC Gamer’s Patch 8 build guide. It favors mobile melee combat, skill utility, and Charisma-based options over keeping every Rogue level. It is a play-style recommendation, not a proven universal best: the available sources do not include controlled comparisons or build-performance testing.
What Swashbuckler adds to a Rogue
Larian introduced the Swashbuckler as one of 12 subclasses in Patch 8, the game’s final major patch; Larian says minor bug fixes may still follow. Rogues choose their subclass at Rogue level 3. Larian’s Patch 8 notes

Fancy Footwork and Rakish Audacity
Fancy Footwork lets you move away from a creature you have attacked in melee without provoking that creature’s opportunity attacks for the rest of the turn. It supports a hit-and-reposition style, but does not prevent opportunity attacks from other creatures.

Rakish Audacity adds +2 to initiative and enables the subclass’s close-range Sneak Attack condition without advantage, provided you are not disadvantaged. Dirty Tricks and Panache
At Swashbuckler level 4, Dirty Tricks provide bonus-action options: Flick o’ the Wrist can disarm, Sand Toss can blind, and Vicious Mockery can impose disadvantage on a target’s next attack roll. Most use Charisma as their spellcasting ability; Sand Toss uses Dexterity. They compete for your bonus action, so using one means giving up another bonus-action option that turn.

At Rogue level 9, Panache makes a Persuasion-versus-Insight check against a humanoid. The effect differs depending on whether the target is an enemy or another target. Why use a Warlock level—and what it costs
PC Gamer recommends Hexblade Warlock 1 / Swashbuckler Rogue 11. Its rationale is that Rogue’s lack of Extra Attack constrains damage and that a Warlock dip, including the guide’s proposed use of Booming Blade, can help address that constraint. The tradeoff is concrete: at Rogue 11, the build gets +6d6 Sneak Attack and Reliable Talent, but it does not reach Rogue 12 and therefore misses that level’s feat opportunity. The class reference lists Rogue feats at levels 4, 8, 10, and 12; this split reaches only the first three. Recommended attributes and level progression
PC Gamer’s suggested starting attributes are one viable example, not a mandatory setup. The high Dexterity supports the Rogue’s core approach, while Charisma contributes to the guide’s Warlock choice, most Dirty Tricks, and Panache.

- Use mobility deliberately. Attack a target in melee, then use Fancy Footwork to reposition away from that target without provoking its opportunity attack for the rest of your turn.
- Exploit Rakish Audacity’s close-range condition. It can make Sneak Attack available without advantage when its conditions are met, but being disadvantaged still matters. Check the specific Rakish Sneak Attack action’s conditions before relying on it.
- Spend bonus actions with a purpose. Dirty Tricks can add control or disruption, but they compete with other bonus-action actions. Choose between them based on whether the turn needs damage, repositioning, or a status effect.
- Balance Dexterity and Charisma. The guide’s suggested profile invests in both: Dexterity remains central to its Rogue setup, while Charisma strengthens most Dirty Tricks and Panache.

Who should choose this split?
Choose Hexblade Warlock 1 / Swashbuckler Rogue 11 if you want a Rogue-heavy melee character with Swashbuckler mobility, the guide’s Warlock and Booming Blade approach, and Charisma-backed utility—and are comfortable giving up Rogue 12’s feat. Consider staying pure Rogue if retaining all four Rogue feat opportunities matters more than that multiclass rationale. The sources do not establish which option deals more damage or performs best across difficulties, parties, or play styles.
