The race’s light and medium armour proficiency, weapon training, flexible skill feature, and racial spells are most valuable when they fill gaps in a class’s kit. For a practical mechanical fit, consider Wizard or Sorcerer; choose martial classes for their play style rather than expecting a proven race-specific power advantage.
How to choose a Githyanki class
Compare three things: what proficiencies the class already provides, whether the racial spells add useful mobility, and what kind of character you want to play. The available sources do not establish a controlled class-by-class performance ranking, so “best” depends on your build rather than a universal tier list.
- Proficiency gain: Githyanki gain light and medium armour proficiency, plus proficiency with shortswords, longswords, and greatswords. These are most noticeable when the class would otherwise lack access to some of that equipment.
- Spell utility: Githyanki Psionics provides Mage Hand at character level 1, Jump at level 3, and Misty Step at level 5. These spells add utility and movement without dictating your class’s core combat plan.
- Skill coverage: Astral Knowledge grants proficiency in all skills associated with one selected ability, according to the BG3 Wiki’s Githyanki entry. It lets you tailor your character’s skill role.
Which classes benefit most?
Wizard or Sorcerer: a practical fit for armour flexibility
For a lightly armoured caster, Githyanki medium armour proficiency can add flexibility to the character’s defensive equipment choices. Jump and Misty Step also provide mobility that does not depend on the caster class. This is a mechanics-based fit, not a tested damage or survival ranking.
Warlock: consider the subclass and equipment plan
Warlock suits players who want a martial-caster theme, but the value of Githyanki proficiencies depends on the specific subclass and equipment plan. Patch 8 added the Hexblade subclass; Larian’s announcement does not identify it as uniquely strongest for Githyanki.

Fighter or Paladin: choose for the class play style
Fighter and Paladin may already have much of the armour and weapon training that Githyanki provide, so the race can add less equipment flexibility to these classes. The racial spells and Astral Knowledge still apply. Choose either class for its own play style, not because the available evidence proves a Githyanki-specific advantage.
Other classes: weigh overlap against utility
No class is barred by the cited BG3 mechanics. For any other class, consider whether its starting proficiencies overlap with Githyanki training, then weigh the remaining value of the racial spells and skill feature. Do not assume character-creation restrictions from tabletop versions apply to BG3.

Does Patch 8 change the choice?
Larian’s April 15, 2025 announcement says Patch 8 added 12 subclasses—one for every playable class—and describes it as the last game patch to introduce new content, while allowing for minor bug fixes. The additions include Bladesinging Wizard, Hexblade Warlock, and Arcane Archer Fighter, among others. The update broadens the subclass options to consider, but it does not establish a best Githyanki subclass or class. See Larian’s Patch 8 announcement for the full list and details.
