For a classic unarmed Tavern Brawler in Baldur’s Gate 3, the clearest default is an Open Hand Monk: the subclass is built around close combat and unarmed techniques, while Tavern Brawler turns Strength into the central attack bonus. Stay Monk for the simplest progression, or consider Monk 9 / Thief Rogue 3 if you want a burst-focused route with another Bonus Action. Neither path has a verified universal damage ranking.
Why Open Hand Monk is the best fit
Larian describes Open Hand Monks as excelling at close combat with special unarmed techniques. That makes Open Hand the most direct match for a build centered on punching rather than throwing weapons. Monk also has built-in support for unarmed combat: Martial Arts can grant a bonus unarmed attack after attacking with a punch or weapon, and Open Hand features interact with attacks such as Flurry of Blows.

How Tavern Brawler works with Monk
In BG3, Tavern Brawler adds the character’s Strength modifier again to attack rolls and damage rolls for qualifying unarmed attacks. The extra Strength contribution can apply even when a Monk uses Dexterity for an attack through Martial Arts, so the feat’s interaction still rewards building Strength. This is BG3’s implementation; tabletop Dungeons & Dragons rules are not interchangeable with it.

Choose your progression: straight Monk or Monk / Thief

The BG3 Builds Team’s guide, updated August 18, 2026 and labelled for Honour Mode and Patch 7, recommends taking Monk to level 4 for Tavern Brawler before continuing the build; it also presents Monk 9 / Thief 3 as a burst alternative. Which route should you choose?
- Choose straight Open Hand Monk if you want the clearest leveling plan and prefer continued Monk progression over multiclass burst.
- Choose Monk 9 / Thief 3 if you value an extra Bonus Action and are comfortable trading away higher Monk progression for the guide’s described Flurry burst.
- Look elsewhere in the Tavern Brawler family if you mainly want thrown-weapon play rather than unarmed attacks. Those builds answer a different combat preference, not a stronger version of the unarmed Open Hand recommendation.
These are playstyle comparisons, not measured damage rankings: no authoritative performance statistic establishes one of these builds as the universal highest-damage choice.

Patch details matter for interactions. Larian’s Patch 6 notes say Tavern Brawler bonus damage began applying to Improvised Weapon attacks and that Bear Wildheart Barbarians correctly receive Rage bonus damage on unarmed attacks. Those notes describe specific fixes; they do not establish every edge case for every later version.

Larian called Patch 8, announced April 15, 2025, the game’s final major content patch. It added 12 subclasses, including Path of the Giant Barbarian and Way of the Drunken Master Monk; Larian also said minor bug fixing could continue. See The Final Patch announcement. The Monk 9 / Thief 3 guide is specifically labelled Honour Mode and Patch 7, so check current in-game behavior if a later update affects the interaction you rely on.
Third-party guides may include gear routes and damage estimates, but those figures are not established here as independently verified or universal. Treat any such totals as guide-specific calculations rather than guaranteed results.
