If Baldur’s Gate 3 opens to a black screen, try the fixes below in order: close overlays, switch between DirectX 11 and Vulkan, simplify display settings, then check configuration files, mods, and the game installation. A black screen can have several causes, so no one step is guaranteed; change one thing at a time and test the game after each change.
1. Close overlays and non-essential programs
Temporarily close chat apps, graphics monitoring or tuning overlays, and other non-essential programs before launching the game again. Larian lists these, along with antivirus and firewall tools, among possible sources of issues. Treat this as a diagnostic test: do not leave your security protection disabled. 2. Switch between DirectX 11 and Vulkan
In the Larian Launcher, choose the graphics API you are not currently using: try DirectX 11 if the game is set to Vulkan, or Vulkan if it is set to DirectX 11. Relaunch and compare the result. Larian recommends this as a test, not as a claim that one API is best for every PC. Its PC graphical-issues guidance gives the same advice.
3. Simplify the display settings
Reduce display complexity to see whether the black screen is tied to resolution, graphics load, or display mode. Try a lower resolution, lower graphics quality, and Windowed mode or Fake Fullscreen. If your monitor refresh rate is above 60 Hz, Larian also suggests capping the frame rate at 60. If a change helps, raise settings gradually to identify what triggers the problem; if it does not, restore your preferred settings before moving on.

4. Reset the graphics configuration carefully
If changing settings through the game does not help, Larian recommends resetting the graphics configuration file. First back it up, then rename or delete %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3graphicSettings.lsx and launch the game so it can recreate the file. The recreated file may use 1280×720 resolution, Windowed mode, and Very Low quality, so you may need to set your preferences again. This resets configuration; it is not a hardware repair. Follow the steps in Larian’s graphical-issues guidance.
5. Check for mods and leftover files
If you use mods now, or have used them before, check for current or residual files before assuming the game itself is damaged. Larian’s troubleshooting covers the installation’s DataMods and DataPublic locations, the local AppData Mods folder, and modsettings.lsx where applicable. Remove or disable only mod-related files you can identify; do not delete the entire profile folder as an early fix, because it also contains saved games and configuration files. 6. Verify or repair the game installation
Use the repair option for the storefront where you own the game. This checks the installation and can replace damaged or missing game files.
- Steam: Open the game’s Properties and use the game-file verification control.
- GOG Galaxy: Open Manage Installation → Verify / Repair.
Larian includes both storefront routes in its startup troubleshooting and bug-report guidance.

7. Check drivers, Windows updates, and GPU selection
Install available graphics-driver and Windows updates. If your PC has both integrated graphics and a dedicated NVIDIA or AMD GPU, check that Baldur’s Gate 3 is assigned to the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics or Microsoft Basic Renderer. Larian also recommends restoring NVIDIA or AMD 3D settings to their defaults when troubleshooting. These are checks to try, not evidence that a paid hardware upgrade is needed. 8. Send Larian useful diagnostic details if it still fails
If the screen remains black, report the issue with enough detail to distinguish a launch failure from a problem that begins during play. Larian asks players to describe whether the issue happens consistently, what they tried, what happened, what they expected to happen, and the steps needed to reproduce it. Include a DxDiag report and relevant logs or crash dumps when available. For startup failures, Windows Event Viewer’s Application log may identify a faulting module. What the old black-screen patch note does—and does not—mean
Larian’s Patch 9 troubleshooting thread said the first hotfix included a “Potential fix for the issue where the screen could be randomly filled in black (or more rarely white) on some systems.” Its update said that the issue had not been reported again by the second hotfix and that the fix appeared confirmed. That is historical patch-era context, not proof that a current black screen has the same cause or that this old hotfix is the right remedy today. See the Patch 9 troubleshooting thread.
