The most reliable way to approach it is to inspect what each dangerous enemy can do, plan for the opening turns, and save defensive or control tools for moments that could cost your party multiple turns. Tactician is challenging, but it is not Honour Mode: it does not add Honour’s Legendary Actions or its restriction on reloading earlier saves.
What changes on Tactician?
Tactician adjusts several parts of combat. The BG3 Wiki’s Custom Mode descriptions summarize the settings: enemies attack ruthlessly and efficiently, hostile characters are stronger and harder to kill, and enemies use advanced spells and items. That means fights can change because of enemy decisions and abilities as well as durability. BG3 Wiki: Difficulty
One Act 1 example on the wiki is a fourth-level enemy listed with 87 HP and an additional +2 Tactician bonus to attack rolls. Treat that as an example for that named enemy, not a formula for every enemy: the exact changes vary by encounter.
Is Tactician harder than Balanced?
Yes. Compared with Balanced, Tactician’s enemy behavior, strength and available spells or items can make mistakes more costly. Simply adding damage is not always the answer: an enemy that can disable a character, protect itself or threaten several party members may be a more urgent target than the opponent with the most hit points.

How is Tactician different from Honour Mode?
Honour Mode is a separate, tougher ruleset, not another name for Tactician. Larian describes it as increasing difficulty in and out of combat, adding over 30 boss-fight tweaks and a Legendary Action system. It also disables loading previous saves; if the party dies, continuing the adventure ends Honour Mode. Tactician does not include those Honour-specific Legendary Actions or save restrictions, and it retains the normal save structure for the selected standard difficulty. How do I prepare for a Tactician fight?
Inspect threats before committing
Check enemy abilities and defenses when you can, especially before a boss encounter or a fight with several spellcasters. Look for abilities that can disable a party member, protect an enemy, punish close positioning or threaten multiple characters. This is a practical response to Tactician’s stronger enemy loadouts, not a guarantee that any one tactic will work.

Choose targets by impact
Prioritize enemies according to what they can do on their next turn, not only how close they are or how much health they have. Removing a dangerous caster or controller early may prevent lost turns; in another encounter, a durable frontline threat may be the immediate danger. Reassess as enemies fall or change tactics.
Plan positioning and turn order
Avoid beginning a dangerous group fight without a plan for where the party will stand and which character acts first. Use range and terrain when they offer protection or a better angle, and coordinate party turns so that attacks, control effects and movement support one another. These are flexible tactical principles, not a universally optimal party composition.

Keep resources for dangerous turns
Do not spend every healing, control or escape option as soon as it becomes available. Holding some resources can help recover when a character is disabled, a boss reaches a dangerous phase or several enemies threaten the party at once. The right reserve depends on the encounter and your party.

- Balthazar: can cast Shield in Tactician.
- Kar’niss: Sanctuary is a level 5 spell in Tactician.
- Malus Thorm: uses Multiattack at 70% HP rather than 40% in both Tactician and Honour Mode.
When a boss has a defensive spell or a phase-linked attack, take its timing into account. Avoid assuming a familiar fight will unfold exactly as it did on a lower difficulty.

What should I know before starting a Tactician run?
- Expect enemies to behave more ruthlessly and use stronger abilities, not merely to survive more damage.
- Inspect unfamiliar enemies and adapt your target priority and positioning to the encounter.
- Plan to preserve some defensive, control or escape resources for turns that threaten multiple actions.
- Tactician is not Honour Mode: it does not impose Honour’s save restrictions or Legendary Action system.
- Custom Mode exposes separate controls for enemy aggression, character power and enemy loadouts. The BG3 Wiki notes that two Custom Mode options cannot be changed after a campaign begins, so review the setup before starting if you want to customize it. BG3 Wiki: Difficulty
