The Blighted Village—also called Moonhaven—is an optional Act One stop between the Druid Grove and the Goblin Camp. Sweep its houses and cellar, then choose whether to rescue Barcus, bargain with the ogres, investigate the Necromancy of Thay, or brave the Whispering Depths. Most importantly: at the windmill, use the Brake lever before untying Barcus Wroot.
Where the Blighted Village fits in Act One
The village sits in the Wilderness between the Druid Grove and Goblin Camp, with routes leading toward the Risen Road, Sunlit Wetlands, and Whispering Depths. Start at the Blighted Village waypoint and use the sweep below as an optional-content checklist; none of these stops is required to continue the main journey. A recent Act One guide recommends levels 3–4 for its Blighted Village section, but that is the guide’s advice, not a game-imposed level requirement (TheGamer’s Act One guide, June 28, 2026).
Apothecary’s House: start Search the Cellar
In the Apothecary’s House south of the waypoint, read the Apothecary’s Ledger on the counter to start Search the Cellar. The wooden hatch behind the counter leads down to shelves with healing potions and alchemical ingredients.
- In the cellar, move the crates along the northern wall to expose a lever.
- Pull the lever to open the concealed passage to an underground cemetery. Some coffins may contain skeletons that rise if disturbed.
- At the cemetery’s southern end, examine the Dark Journal in a casket if you want context for the Ornate Mirror, then interact with the mirror to reach the hidden laboratory.
- Manage the cellar’s traps and the gate on the way through; the location reference lists lockpicking, a key, or mobility spells as ways past the gate. Disarm traps or find another way around them.
The laboratory contains the Necromancy of Thay. The book can lead to either Unlock the Ancient Tome or Destroy the Ancient Tome; these are distinct quest paths, not mandatory steps for every player.

Choose what to do with the Necromancy of Thay
- Unlock it: Find the Dark Amethyst in the Whispering Depths and use it as the tome’s keygem. Reading the opened book calls for Wisdom saving throws and can grant Speak with Dead and Forbidden Knowledge; the full consequences depend on your choices.
- Destroy it: The quest reference says the tome must be hit with radiant damage, which triggers a hostile encounter.
For the cellar route, mirror interaction, and tome quest details, see the Blighted Village location reference and Necromancy of Thay quest reference.
Blacksmith’s House: begin Finish the Masterwork Weapon
Search the Blacksmith’s House for Highcliff’s Blueprints in a trapped chest. Reading the plans starts Finish the Masterwork Weapon and points you toward Sussur Tree Bark in the Underdark. At the forge, combine the bark with a dagger, greatsword, or sickle to finish the weapon (quest reference).

The house’s basement is also an alternate way into the Whispering Depths. Break the cracked wall on the north side with force damage; the well is the other entrance.
Windmill: rescue Barcus without launching him
The windmill is north of the waypoint. Approach by the regular route to trigger the conversation with Fezzerk and his goblins. If you enter through the wall breach, the group becomes hostile without the usual conversation. Resolve the goblins through dialogue or combat, then go inside.

- Find the two levers on the windmill’s lower level.

- Only after the blades have stopped, untie Barcus Wroot.
Do not activate Release Brake: it speeds up the windmill and launches Barcus. You can find his backpack through a hatch in the mill cellar. See the Rescue the Gnome quest reference for the encounter details.
Schoolhouse: negotiate with Lump’s ogres or fight
The ruined schoolhouse is southwest of the waypoint. Lump the Enlightened, Chock, and Fank are inside. Dialogue can persuade them to leave peacefully or secure their help through a bargain. If recruited, they give you Lump’s bonehorn, which can summon them during Act One. The bargain’s terms depend on dialogue choices and payment.

Combat is another option, but nearby goblins may join on the ogres’ side. A cracked support beam provides another way to initiate a fight. Afterward, search the old classroom, including the bookshelf and supply barrels. Encounter details are in the Lump the Enlightened reference.

The well north of the waypoint and the Blacksmith’s basement both lead to the Whispering Depths. The cave holds Phase Spiders, Ettercaps, an Apprentice’s Pack with a journal hint, and the Phase Spider Matriarch’s den. The Dark Amethyst is near the Matriarch and may be retrieved without defeating the spiders if you can sneak to it (Whispering Depths location reference).

Stealth or combat
The Matriarch can hatch nearby egg clutches into spiderlings when combat begins. Scout the web-covered area before committing to a fight; stealth or destroying eggs can reduce the danger of them hatching. Wyll’s warning on descending through the well is apt: “Those webs are huge. Tread lightly, or become dinner.”
Use Feather Fall before the Underdark drop
A green-glowing pit in the center of the spider cave leads to the Underdark. Cast Feather Fall before jumping down; the drop is otherwise lethal. For the gem, you can instead sneak into the Matriarch’s area and leave by your entrance.
Which village options should you take?
| Stop | Lower-combat route | Combat or risk | Potential reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windmill | Resolve the goblins through dialogue where possible; use Brake before freeing Barcus. | Fight the goblins if dialogue fails or you prefer combat. Release Brake launches Barcus. | Rescue Barcus and collect his backpack from the cellar hatch. |
| Schoolhouse | Use dialogue to avoid a fight or bargain for the ogres’ help. | Attack the ogres or trigger combat via the cracked support beam; nearby goblins may join them. | Lump’s bonehorn can summon the ogres during Act One if recruited. |
| Necromancy of Thay | Leave the tome alone if you do not want to pursue its quest. | Getting the gem means reaching the spider cave; reading entails Wisdom saving throws. Destroying the tome requires radiant damage and triggers a hostile encounter. | Unlocking and reading it can grant Speak with Dead and Forbidden Knowledge; results depend on choices. |
| Whispering Depths | Try stealth to reach the Dark Amethyst near the Matriarch without defeating the spiders. | Fight the spiders and manage the egg clutches that may hatch spiderlings. | The Dark Amethyst unlocks the Necromancy of Thay; Feather Fall enables the central pit’s Underdark route. |
For a quick sweep, prioritize the Apothecary’s Ledger and cellar if you want the tome quest, the blueprints if you want the masterwork weapon, and the windmill if you want to rescue Barcus. The well, ogres, and tome’s eventual fate are optional branches.
