For most balanced-party campaigns, Light is the strongest all-around Cleric domain, with Tempest close behind for players who want armored thunder-and-lightning offense. Life is the clearest choice for dedicated healing, while Trickery’s value rises in stealth-focused parties. This is an editorial ranking of the eight domains available after Patch 8—not a head-to-head performance test. It assumes a standard single-player campaign, a balanced party, and no specialized multiclass build.
Clerics choose a domain at level 1, and its features add to the class’s base toolkit. Since domain spells and abilities arrive at different levels, an early strength may not tell the whole story of a campaign. Your preferred difficulty, party, gear, tactics, and role-play priorities can all change which domain is best for you.
How the ranking works
The order weighs combat impact, action economy, defense, spell flexibility, and usefulness across different encounters. The available feature references support some domains in more detail than others, so placements for Death, War, Knowledge, and Nature are more provisional than those for Light, Tempest, Life, and Trickery. No win rates, player consensus, or controlled subclass comparison are established here.

Light
Light is the strongest general-purpose pick in this ranking because it pairs offense with protection. Its domain spell list includes Fireball, and its Channel Divinity deals radiant damage while dispelling magical darkness. Warding Flare adds a defensive reaction, giving the domain ways to influence a fight even when it is not using its biggest spell. Choose Light if you want a Cleric who can contribute meaningful area damage without giving up a defensive tool.

Tempest
Tempest is the clearest fit for a Cleric built around thunder and lightning damage. It brings heavy armor and martial weapons, reactive damage, and Destructive Wrath, which maximizes rolled thunder or lightning damage. That combination gives the domain a forceful offensive identity and the durability to stand nearer the fight. It is especially appealing if you expect to use its damage features consistently.

Life
Life is the dedicated healing and party-sustain choice. Disciple of Life adds healing to spells, while Preserve Life restores hit points to nearby allies—3 × character level in hit points. Its value is clearest when keeping several allies on their feet changes the outcome of an encounter. Healing is not automatically the best use of a turn, however: preventing damage or ending a threat can be more valuable than restoring health after the fact.

Death
Death is one of the eight domains added to the roster in Patch 8, which Larian described as the game’s final major patch. Its inclusion is confirmed, but the feature detail available for this comparison is not sufficient to make a confident fine-grained judgment against the better-documented domains. Treat this middle placement as provisional rather than proof that Death is a middle-of-the-pack choice; players drawn to its theme should assess its current in-game features before deciding.

War
War suits a weapon-focused Cleric, with a martial leaning and bonus-action attack utility. Its relative strength depends on how often your build can make those attacks worthwhile alongside the rest of the Cleric’s actions. It ranks below the more clearly evidenced options here because the available feature detail does not support a complete comparison of its full progression.

Knowledge
Knowledge is the utility-oriented option in this comparison. Trickery
Trickery is the most specialized pick in this all-purpose combat ranking, not a domain without a use. It supports stealth and illusion play: its features include granting an ally advantage on Stealth checks and Invoke Duplicity, which gives allies near the illusion advantage on attacks. Its spells also support stealth and illusion. In a party that plans around infiltration and tactical setup, those strengths may matter more than direct, broadly useful damage.
Choose by the kind of Cleric you want to play
- For an all-around campaign: Light combines offensive reach with a defensive reaction.
- For thunder-and-lightning offense in armor: Tempest has the most direct identity.
- For dedicated party healing: Life is built around healing and sustain.
- For stealth and illusion: Trickery becomes more attractive when the party uses those tools deliberately.
- For a weapon-focused approach: War is worth considering if you plan to make use of its bonus-action attack utility.
- For a thematic or utility-first choice: Knowledge and Nature may fit the character even when this ranking cannot establish their precise combat standing.
What Patch 8 changed for Clerics
Patch 8 brought the roster to eight domains by adding Death. The other domains are Knowledge, Life, Light, Nature, Tempest, Trickery, and War. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement identifies Death Domain Cleric among the additions and calls Patch 8 the final major patch. Clerics select their domain at level 1; the domain then supplements the base class with features and spells as the character levels.
