Hotfix #36, dated March 26, 2026, was released to address it. The notes do not say that performance declined for every player or during gameplay generally.
What performance issue did Larian report?
Larian said a small update intended to address lingering corrupted savegames seemingly introduced performance issues that triggered crashes for some players. The specific fix listed in Hotfix #36 is: “Fixed a framerate drop and eventual crash when loading a savegame.” This describes a problem during save loading, not a confirmed general drop in framerate throughout play.
The announcement does not quantify how many players were affected, measure the framerate loss, or report a recovery rate. It also does not promise that every performance problem is resolved.
What Hotfix #36 fixes, and when was it released?
Larian dated Hotfix #36 to March 26, 2026, and identified the build as version 4.1.1.7209685. It said the fix was rolling out for all platforms. The notes also cover other crashes and blockers, including separate platform-specific issues:

- Xbox: Tooltips in Inventory and Trade windows were not displaying correctly.
- Mac: Some players could not progress beyond Character Creation after starting a character introduction cinematic in Honour Mode.
Those are distinct issues from the save-loading framerate drop, and the notes do not break out the performance fix by platform.
Is Hotfix #36 Baldur’s Gate 3’s latest patch?
Patch 8, released April 15, 2025, was described by Larian as the game’s final major update. Smaller maintenance updates continued afterward. Hotfix #36 is the latest hotfix in the official news listing located for this article; that listing showed Hotfix #35 dated November 20, 2025, before it. This is a maintenance hotfix, not a new major content patch.

What to try if the problem continues
First distinguish the reported symptom from other issues: note whether the slowdown happens specifically while loading a save, whether the game then crashes, and which platform you are using. For ongoing problems, use Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 support hub and its bug-report process; its technical guidance includes startup and gameplay crashes, mods, system requirements, and the Vulkan/DX11 difference.

PC checks
- Test without mods to see whether the issue persists.
- Temporarily disable non-essential background programs and overlays, then check whether the symptom changes.
- If you use Vulkan, consider testing DX11, or vice versa. Larian says Vulkan may provide a performance increase in most cases but can be slightly less stable, so neither option is a universal fix. See Larian’s Vulkan and DX11 FAQ.
These are diagnostic options for PC, not confirmed remedies for every save-loading crash. Troubleshooting differs by platform and symptom; the available official notes do not establish that buying new hardware resolves this regression.

Hotfix #34 added a native Steam Deck build and described model-streaming improvements that Larian said should reduce framerate spikes in busy areas such as the Lower City in Act 3. That earlier work is separate: it does not show that Hotfix #36 caused a Steam Deck-specific problem or that the save-loading fix addresses every Act 3 performance issue.
