Keep Cazador in magical sunlight, free Astarion with the Help action if the ritual captures him, and use party members or summons to occupy the glowing ritual circles. The ritual completes at the start of combat’s fourth turn if Astarion remains trapped, but rescuing him or killing one sacrificial spawn interrupts it.
What matters most in the Cazador fight
- Rescue Astarion quickly: If he is in the ritual circle, use Help to free him. The ritual completes at the start of turn four if it has not been interrupted, permanently killing him.
- Use magical sunlight: Daylight deals 20 radiant damage when Cazador starts his turn in sunlight, gives him disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks, and prevents him from entering or remaining in Mist Form. Larian’s Patch 3 notes confirm the Mist Form interaction: official Patch 3 notes.
- Occupy the ritual circles: The seven sources strengthen Cazador. Standing a party member or summon on a circle removes its benefit while that unit remains there.
- Choose the story outcome after the battle: Defeating Cazador does not automatically decide whether Astarion ascends. You make that choice in the scene at the coffin.
For the specific turn rules and enemy mechanics, see the Cazador combat reference.
Prepare before you engage
- Bring a character or item that can cast Daylight. Be ready to reposition its source if Cazador moves out of the light.
- Spread the party rather than clustering everyone around the platform. Cazador uses upcast Call Lightning, and his allies include bats, werewolves, and fallen Gur hunters.
- If you want to set up the circles, the combat reference describes sneaking in under Invisibility and placing characters on ritual sources before combat. This is an optional tactic, not a requirement.
How to fight Cazador, step by step
1. Free Astarion if the scene captures him
When Astarion is in your active party, the encounter can begin with Cazador binding him in a ritual circle. Use the Help action on Astarion as soon as you can. Leaving him bound through three combat turns lets the ritual resolve at the beginning of the fourth; Astarion then dies permanently. Freeing him interrupts that countdown and returns him to the fight.
You can also start the encounter at range and keep Astarion behind the stairs to avoid the capture scene. If he later approaches while Cazador is alive, however, the scene can still trigger. The quest reference describes this approach.

2. Keep Cazador in Daylight
Cast Daylight so Cazador is in its area, then watch his position as the fight moves. While in sunlight, he takes 20 radiant damage at the start of his turn and suffers disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks. Magical sunlight also forces him out of Mist Form and prevents him from changing into or remaining in it, as Larian states in its Patch 3 notes.
3. Deny his ritual benefits
Have party members or summons stand on the glowing ritual circles. This removes the benefit linked to each occupied source, freeing your main attackers to focus on Cazador and the other enemies. Three notable sources provide these benefits:

| Ritual source | Benefit to Cazador |
|---|---|
| Astarion’s circle | Extra bonus action |
| Violet’s circle | +5 AC |
| Yousen’s circle | 3d8 healing per turn |
The combat reference lists the sources and their effects. A summon can be useful here because it can occupy a circle without pulling a core party member away from attacking or supporting the group.
4. Interrupt the ritual if you need another route
Killing any one sacrificial spawn interrupts the ritual and prevents its completion. This also means Cazador can no longer complete the ascension ritual after the battle, so use this option only if you accept that consequence for Astarion’s story.

5. Control the other enemies
Cazador is not alone: expect bats, werewolves, and fallen Gur hunters, alongside his own attacks. Area spells such as Wall of Fire, Moonbeam, and Spirit Guardians are suggested for dealing with groups. The combat reference also describes using the stairs as a chokepoint and persistent area spells to limit how freely enemies can reach your party. Avoid placing everyone where one Call Lightning attack can hit several characters.

| Approach | What you do | Effect and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Direct rescue | Use Help on Astarion, then attack Cazador and his allies. | Returns Astarion to combat and interrupts the countdown without sacrificing a spawn. |
| Source control | Place party members or summons on ritual circles. | Removes the benefits of occupied circles; units holding them are not freely available for other tasks. |
| Sunlight control | Cast Daylight and adjust its position as needed. | Deals radiant damage at the start of Cazador’s turn in sunlight, weakens his attacks and checks, and suppresses Mist Form. |
| Spawn kill | Kill one sacrificial spawn during combat. | Interrupts the ritual, but makes Astarion’s ascension impossible. |
What happens after Cazador is defeated?
Interact with Cazador’s coffin to continue the scene. Astarion’s response determines whether he ascends or abandons the ritual; refusing his request can also cause him to leave the party. Killing a sacrificial spawn during the fight prevents the ascension ritual from being completed. These outcomes are separate from the choice about the imprisoned spawn, whose fate you also decide. The outcome reference and quest reference describe the branches.
There is no need to treat one outcome as the only correct one: decide based on what you want for Astarion and the imprisoned spawn, and choose accordingly when the scene presents the options.
