To beat Viconia DeVir in Baldur’s Gate 3, reduce the Sharrans’ control of the battlefield first: target the six enemies who can cast Darkness, then use the stairs and doorway to funnel the rest into area attacks. Avoid hitting Viconia with radiant damage while Radiant Retort is active, and keep fighting after she falls—the remaining Sharrans do not automatically surrender.
Where to find Viconia and what starts the fight
Viconia is in the Cloister of Sombre Embrace beneath the House of Grief in Baldur’s Gate’s Lower City. The encounter is part of Shadowheart’s Act Three story. The House is the route into the cloister, where Shadowheart or your player character can undergo the Mapping of the Heart before Viconia appears. Viconia seeks the artefact and demands that Shadowheart be handed over. In the negotiation, a successful DC 20 Persuasion or Intimidation check can make her relent on the artefact, but not on Shadowheart. Refusing that demand begins combat.
If you completed the Mapping of the Heart
Viconia can use abilities tied to the mapped character’s fears. The encounter reference says you can avoid this by leaving that character at camp or by passing a DC 20 Investigation check to uncover the hidden entrance. If the Mapping has not happened, Viconia cannot use Castigate Heartform or Mapped Terror.

Which enemies to prioritize
The main challenge is the Sharran group’s combination of Darkness and attacks that can disrupt healing. Viconia begins protected by Sanctuary and Radiant Retort; her allies use Darkness, while Fidelians can also use Bone Chill. The encounter reference identifies five Sharran Fidelians and Sentry Fredrichk as the six enemies capable of casting Darkness. - First priority: the five Fidelians and Fredrichk. Focus fire to eliminate them, or use crowd control to stop them casting.
- Next: enemies who are threatening injured characters or using Bone Chill to interfere with healing.
- Viconia: account for Sanctuary and Radiant Retort before committing attacks to her.
Choose a battlefield plan
Two approaches work with the encounter’s layout. Holding the entrance suits a party with area spells and enough defenses to withstand attacks while enemies approach. Working inward from the edges suits a party that can pick off casters and control enemies without relying on a single chokepoint.

Holding the chokepoint
Retreating through the doorway can concentrate the Sharrans. The encounter reference lists Wall of Fire, Wall of Ice, Spike Growth, Fireball, Cone of Cold, Sunbeam, and Blade Barrier as possible tools. Use what your party actually has; push enemies back onto damaging surfaces when practical.
Working inward
If your party is better at picking targets than holding a position, keep the six Darkness casters as the priority and eliminate them as opportunities arise. Avoid spreading damage across the retinue while the casters remain able to obscure the fight. Crowd control can buy time when a caster cannot be killed immediately.

How to handle Darkness and healing pressure
Bring ways to deal damage or control enemies without relying on clear sight, and consider protection from incoming damage or temporary hit points. The encounter reference names immunity to Blinded as a counter, including the Eversight Ring and Shar’s Spear of Evening. Daylight can remove Darkness, but Sharrans may cast it again, so it is not a permanent solution by itself.
Bone Chill can make healing harder to use when you need it most. Prioritize the Fidelians applying it, and do not assume a healing-focused plan will work normally while they remain active.

When to attack Viconia—and why radiant damage is risky
Radiant Retort makes radiant damage against Viconia dangerous: the retaliation can seriously punish the character who hits her. Avoid radiant area attacks that may catch her unless you are deliberately prepared for that consequence.
There is a risk-versus-reward interaction with Sanctuary. The encounter reference notes that radiant damage can trigger an opening, potentially letting the party target Viconia earlier. A small, controlled hit may be a deliberate tactic, but a large radiant attack or Divine Intervention can likely kill the caster when Viconia is hit. Do not use this as a default approach; only attempt it if you can manage the retaliation and accept the risk.
What to do after Viconia falls
Keep controlling the field and deal with the surviving Sharrans. Larian Studios’ Patch 4 notes state: “Viconia’s minions will no longer stop fighting when she is defeated.” Her defeat is not the end of the encounter.
Story choices after the battle
If Shadowheart is a Dark Justiciar, she can persuade some cultists to join her and take over the cloister after Viconia’s defeat. If a post-combat conversation with Viconia is available, you can choose whether to spare or kill her. These are story outcomes, not requirements for winning the fight.
