You can get a Mimic to follow your party in unmodded Baldur’s Gate 3, but it is a temporary workaround—not a permanent pet or recruitable companion. The method described in a published guide is to defeat the Mimic hidden in a chest at Moonrise Towers, carry its corpse to Glut at the Myconid colony, and have him reanimate it. The animated creature is limited to Glut’s time in your party and the Underdark area boundary.
How to get the temporary Mimic
- Reach Act II and search Moonrise Towers. Go to the upper floor and look in a bedroom for a chest that is actually a Mimic. The guide describing this workaround says to attack the chest to reveal the creature.
- Defeat the Mimic. Once it transforms, kill it. Have the character with the greatest carrying capacity pick up the corpse; the guide suggests using a Hill Giant Strength potion if you need more carrying capacity.
- Bring the corpse to Glut. Return to the Myconid colony in the Underdark and use Glut’s reanimation ability on the Mimic’s corpse.
- Keep the limits in mind. The guide says the animated Mimic is available only while Glut remains in your party and your party stays within the Underdark boundaries. This is a temporary animated corpse, not a lasting camp pet. The method is described in a published guide and has not been independently verified here: guide to the Mimic workaround.
What the vanilla workaround does—and does not do
The workaround gives you a temporary animated Mimic by using Glut’s ability on a corpse. It does not establish a permanent recruitable Mimic companion, and it does not turn the creature into a pet that can accompany you throughout the game. If you leave the Underdark boundaries or Glut is no longer in the party, the guide says the Mimic is no longer available.
Can a mod add Mimics?
The More Mimics mod listing describes a mod that makes chests potential Mimics and marks the mod compatible with Patch 8. It adds possible Mimic encounters; the listing does not establish a permanent pet or recruitable companion. The listed requirements are Norbyte’s Script Extender and Mod Configuration Menu, and the author recommends BG3 Mod Manager. Check the current listing for updated compatibility and installation details.
Larian introduced an in-game Mod Manager and Toolkit in Patch 7. Its mod-support FAQ warns that modded saves may not be compatible across platforms when game versions differ. Patch 8 added partial level editing to the Toolkit, but Larian says it cannot add dialogue or alter static world elements such as buildings, scenery, and terrain: Patch 8 announcement. Neither feature is a documented way to create a permanent Mimic companion.

- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
Should you install a mod for a pet Mimic?
If you want more Mimic encounters, More Mimics is the option described in its listing. If your goal is a permanent companion, the listed mod information does not promise one. For a no-mod playthrough, Glut’s reanimation workaround is the documented route, with its party and area restrictions.
Larian called Patch 8 the game’s final major patch while noting that minor bug-fixing may continue: Patch 8 announcement. Mod compatibility can still depend on the game version, so check the mod listing and Larian’s support guidance before installing or moving a modded save between platforms.
