A character can potentially gain a permanent +2 to one ability score, up to 24, by passing a prayer check and offering a memory. The +2 is not guaranteed on the normal route. The mirror’s recognition check unlocks it for the party, but each character makes their own reward attempt.
Where to find the Mirror of Loss
Go to the House of Grief in Act 3 and enter the Cloister of Sombre Embrace. The Mirror of Loss is there. Do not confuse it with the separate Magic Mirror used at camp to change a character’s appearance; Larian’s Patch #3 notes refer to that camp feature, not the Mirror of Loss.
How to unlock and use the mirror
- Identify the mirror. Have a party member pass a DC 20 Religion check or a DC 25 Arcana check. Alternatively, finding the note in the Night Orchid Cave bypasses this recognition check. One successful identification opens access for the party.
- Make an individual prayer attempt. Each eligible character who wants the main reward must interact with the mirror and attempt a DC 25 Religion check to pray to Shar. Each character gets one prayer check; failing it normally ends that character’s chance to obtain the +2 through the regular route.
- Offer a memory. If the character can proceed, the mirror asks for a memory. A sacrifice causes Stolen Vigour, a temporary -2 to the chosen ability. The penalty lasts until a long rest or until removed with Remove Curse or Greater Restoration.
- Choose an ability if offered the reward. The possible permanent bonus is +2 to one ability score, and can raise the score to 24. The temporary Stolen Vigour penalty can be removed without losing the permanent bonus.
The DC 25 prayer matters, but passing it improves the chance of receiving the +2 rather than guaranteeing it. These mechanics are documented by the community-maintained BG3 Wiki’s Mirror of Loss entry; they are not confirmed here by gameplay testing or official developer documentation.
Which route should you choose?
Normal route: prayer and memories
The normal approach requires a successful prayer and a favorable outcome from the mirror’s hidden reward mechanics. A separate possible outcome is Patriar’s Memory, which grants +1 Charisma. If a character is pursuing both Patriar’s Memory and the +2 ability bonus, the BG3 Wiki models offering three memories before attempting the prayer as a strategy with a 55.5% chance of both rewards and a 93.6% chance of at least the +2. These are probabilities calculated and reported by wiki contributors from the described in-game mechanics, not measured player-outcome statistics.

Alternative: surrender Forbidden Knowledge
A character with Forbidden Knowledge can surrender it to receive a guaranteed +2 without the prayer check or Stolen Vigour. This trades away the knowledge rather than simply bypassing a temporary penalty: if the character learned Danse Macabre from the book, surrendering Forbidden Knowledge also relinquishes that spell, and the book may refuse to open afterward. Consider the book’s value to that character before choosing this route.

Shadowheart’s eligibility depends on her story choices. The BG3 Wiki reports that a Shadowheart who is no longer loyal to Shar is denied the mirror’s benefits. A Shadowheart who becomes Shar’s Chosen through the relevant Dark Justiciar choices instead automatically receives a +2 bonus without a curse, but cannot receive Patriar’s Memory. These are conditional outcomes, not default instructions for every playthrough.

Plan the attempt before interacting
- Use the recognition check or the Night Orchid Cave note once to unlock the mirror for the party.
- Decide which eligible characters should attempt the prayer; each has only one check.
- For the normal route, account for the temporary -2 from Stolen Vigour and plan to take a long rest or use Remove Curse or Greater Restoration afterward.
- If using Forbidden Knowledge, weigh the guaranteed +2 against losing the knowledge and, where applicable, Danse Macabre.
