Reach the Grand Mausoleum on the northern edge of Reithwin Town in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, solve the mausoleum’s painting puzzle, then pass the Gauntlet’s first chamber by extinguishing its lights and following the gaps in the floor glyphs. This is not the separate Ancient Temple at Grymforge in Act One.
Where is the Gauntlet of Shar?
The Gauntlet is beneath the Grand Mausoleum at the northern edge of Reithwin Town, in the Shadow-Cursed Lands during Act Two. At the mausoleum, solve the painting puzzle to reveal the entrance. The location may be called an “Ancient Shar Temple” in searches or player descriptions, but the in-game destination is the Gauntlet of Shar.
Do not confuse it with the Ancient Temple at Grymforge, which is a separate Act One location. The route to the Gauntlet is through Reithwin’s Grand Mausoleum, not Grymforge. Baldur’s Gate 3 location guide
How to pass the first Gauntlet chamber
Inside, a statue’s repulsion field blocks a direct approach to the pedestal. The intended solution is to make the room dark so the gaps in the glyph rings become visible.

- Use the side alcoves’ levers to lower the Mystic Thuribles.
- Extinguish the lowered Thuribles and remove or deactivate other light sources in the room.
- Look for the gaps in the floor’s glyph rings. Carefully follow the gaps around the statue rather than walking into its repulsion field.
- Touch the pedestal to open the passage onward.
If the puzzle is obstructing progress, teleportation can provide an alternate bypass into the inner area or past the door; a lever beyond it can let the party through. This is an optional workaround, not the normal solution. Gauntlet chamber puzzle walkthrough
What to know before continuing to the Nightsong
The Gauntlet’s trials are part of the route toward the Nightsong in the Shadowfell. You need four Umbral Gems to reach it: three are obtained from the Trials of Shar, and the fourth is associated with Yurgir. Use one gem to activate the lift; the other three open the lower door. The in-game book The Gauntlet of Shar, attributed to the Church of Shar, describes the trials this way: “Each trial shall yield an umbral gem. Each gem shall bring the victor closer to the Nightsinger.”

If Shadowheart is with you, the Spear of Night from the Silent Library is relevant to the Nightsong sequence. Reaching the Shadowfell is also a consequential Act Two progression step: a walkthrough warns that other quests may expire once you enter.
