Doing so opens the concealed chamber.
Where to find the Riddle of the Night
The puzzle is in the Silent Library, inside the Gauntlet of Shar and south of the Faith-Step Trial. The pedestal is in the chamber beyond the library’s western portcullis. [bg3.wiki]
How to get through the Silent Library
The Librarian maintains a Silence effect over the room. Defeat it to end the effect; undead Justiciars also patrol the library. Take care around the bookcases while fighting: they are trapped, and area attacks can destroy the book you need.
Find and retrieve the Nightsinger book
- Search the northeastern bookcases for Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger.
- Approach the relevant trapped bookcase carefully. A guide reports a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check for the bookshelf; disarm its trap where practical. [bg3.wiki]
- Take the book without using area attacks near the shelves, which could destroy it. [Game8]
Open the western portcullis
Press the correct button on the column to open the western portcullis. If you miss it, the guide describes two alternatives:
#1 Best Overall
- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
| Option | When it helps |
|---|---|
| Find and press the column button | Use this direct route if you can locate the correct button. |
| Lockpick the gate | An alternative if your character can pass the relevant lockpicking check. |
| Hit the far-side lever through the grate | Useful if you have a ranged attack that can reach the lever. |
The lockpicking and lever alternatives are described by Game8.
Place the book on the pedestal
- Go through the western portcullis to the chamber containing the pedestal.
- Interact with the pedestal labelled The Riddle of the Night.
- Combine it with Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger. The concealed chamber opens. [bg3.wiki]
The plaque’s question is reported as “What can silence a Nightsong?” [Game8] The game’s practical solution is to use the Nightsinger book on the pedestal; the thematic connection to Shar is interpretation, not a separate answer you need to select.
