The merchants easiest to miss in Baldur’s Gate 3 are often tucked into optional areas, hidden behind story choices, or found somewhere different later. Use this act-by-act checklist to find them. Moving into a new act does not automatically lock you out of every earlier trader, but some access and stock can change with your choices.
Act One: Check the side areas, not just the Grove
The Wilderness has familiar stops such as Arron and Dammon in the Emerald Grove, but the act’s other traders are spread across optional locations. If you are already exploring these areas, check their traders before moving on.
- Emerald Grove: Arron and Dammon. Auntie Ethel is also listed as a trader here before relocating to the Riverside Teahouse.
- Risen Road: Brem is near the Risen Road.
- Goblin Camp: Grat and Roah Moonglow are traders here. Volo also moves here from the Grove before a later quest state.
- Underdark: Blurg and Derryth Bonecloak are easy to overlook if you skip this optional area.
- Grymforge: Look for Corsair Greymon and Stonemason Kith.
- Mountain Pass and Rosymorn Monastery Trail: A’jak’nir Jeera and Lady Esther are around the Crèche and Mountain Pass area.
Track traders who move
Auntie Ethel’s move from the Grove to the Riverside Teahouse, and Volo’s move from the Goblin Camp to your camp after rescue, are relocations or quest states rather than simple permanent disappearances. If you cannot find one where expected, check the next location associated with their story.
What the Act One transition means
Many Act One traders remain accessible during Act Two, so entering the next act is not a universal cutoff. Still, checking optional locations before advancing is useful if you want to shop while nearby or avoid missing stock and access that may depend on story choices.

Act Two: Sweep Moonrise and Last Light
Act Two’s traders are split between its main hubs and optional locations. At Moonrise Towers, look for Araj Oblodra, Lann Tarv, and Roah Moonglow. At Last Light Inn, check Dammon, Barcus, Mattis, and Quartermaster Talli. Other listed trader locations include the House of Healing and the Gauntlet of Shar.
Account for access and relocation
Quartermaster Talli relocates from Last Light Inn to Moonrise Towers at the end of the act. Her location can therefore change as the story progresses. Access to traders in this act can also depend on progression and choices, so a location listing does not guarantee that every character will remain available in every playthrough.

Two unusual trade interfaces
Balthazar and He Who Was are described as pseudo-traders rather than ordinary merchants marked on the map. Balthazar may still have useful items, so do not rely only on the usual trader icon when checking an optional location.
Act Three: Search Rivington and the Lower City
Act Three has its own sweep of shops, optional interiors, and less obvious trade interfaces. In Rivington, Mattis trades outside the Requisitioned Barn; Bumpnagel is in Angleiron’s Cellar; and vendors can be found around the Circus of the Last Days. The Lower City’s traders include locations such as Felogyr’s Fireworks, Bonecloak’s Apothecary, the Lodge, shops, and taverns.

Check dialogue as well as the map
Some characters with a trade interface are not marked with the usual trader map icon. When you enter an optional interior, inspect character dialogue for a trade option rather than assuming that an unmarked location has no merchant.
Mattis: a choice-sensitive example
Mattis can offer the Tower-Shaped Key, which is used in the Selûnite Resistance investigation. Confronting him about Silfy removes dialogue-based trade access; in Act Three, he trades outside the Requisitioned Barn in Rivington. If you want to trade with him, avoid that confrontation before doing so.

How trader stock refreshes
Trader inventories can combine guaranteed items, including unique magic items, with items drawn from tables. Some table-selected stock depends on the level of the first party member to trade with or pickpocket that merchant after a refresh. The general inventory reference says stock refreshes after a long rest or character level-up, while previously sold or traded items usually remain available. These are general mechanics, not a guarantee that every merchant’s inventory behaves identically.
A practical merchant checklist
- Before leaving a major hub, check its nearby traders, including characters whose dialogue may include a trade option.
- When exploring an optional area, check the named traders there before moving on.
- If a trader is missing, consider whether they relocate or whether a quest state has changed their location.
- Before making a choice that affects a trader, trade first if you want to preserve access; Mattis is one explicit example.
- For a particular item, check the merchant’s stock after a refresh rather than assuming every listed item is always present.
The trader locations and inventory mechanics described here come from community-maintained BG3 Wiki references rather than official developer documentation. Patch-sensitive quest conditions and stock details may change with the game version.
