A common optimization route pairs it with Thief Rogue and the Tavern Brawler feat, but that build assumes you are willing to support Strength and make tradeoffs in ability scores or defenses. Shadow, Four Elements, and Drunken Master are better fits for different playstyles, not automatically inferior choices.
Which Monk subclass should you choose?
Pick based on how you want the Monk to fight. Open Hand is the straightforward recommendation for unarmed damage; the other subclasses offer stealth and mobility, elemental attacks, or a drunken-brawler theme.

Open Hand is a build recommendation, not an official Larian ranking. The subclass roster grew to four with Patch 8, released April 15, 2025, which added a subclass for each of the game’s 12 classes and was described as the final major patch. How to build an unarmed Open Hand Monk
Choose Tavern Brawler if you are building around Strength
Tavern Brawler is the feat to consider for a Strength-supported unarmed build. That means committing to Strength through your ability scores or relying on strength elixirs, an approach described in current build guides. The tradeoff is that Monk also has other ability-score and survivability demands. If you do not want an elixir-dependent setup, prioritize ability scores and defense rather than treating Tavern Brawler as mandatory. Pick the multiclass split for the feature tradeoff
Two published routes are Open Hand Monk 9 / Thief Rogue 3 and Monk 8 / Thief 4. The 9/3 split is a current high-damage option; the 8/4 version is an alternative when an additional feat matters more. Taking more Rogue levels means stopping Monk progression earlier, while taking more Monk levels changes which Rogue features you gain. Compare those priorities before choosing: neither split is a universal best for every character or playthrough. The routes are described in GameSpot’s guide and PC Gamer’s guide.
Treat gear as optional upgrades
Build guides identify the Graceful Cloth, Gloves of Soul Catching, and Boots of Uninhibited Kushigo as useful equipment examples for an unarmed Monk. They are in-game items, not requirements for the subclass or build. See PC Gamer’s Monk build guide for its equipment recommendations.

When another subclass is the better fit
- Choose Shadow if stealth and shadow-based repositioning matter more to you than specializing in Open Hand’s unarmed options.
- Choose Four Elements if you want elemental, spell-like attacks as part of your Monk’s combat style.
- Choose Drunken Master if its theme and Patch 8 mechanics appeal to you, including its described interaction with being drunk and Ki recovery after drinking alcohol.
Larian says it rebalanced Monk and increased its Ki to help the class feel powerful alongside other classes: “We also did a lot of work house-ruling this class, re-balancing Monks and giving them more Ki to ensure they feel powerful next to our other classes.” The statement appears in Community Update #20; it describes class-wide adjustments rather than a ranking of subclasses.
