If you can’t join or host a Baldur’s Gate 3 multiplayer game, first check whether the group is using cross-play, same-platform PC play, or mods. Cross-play uses a separate lobby and Larian Friends List; an existing campaign also needs cross-play enabled on its save. Then test without mods and isolate the host, player, join method, and network before changing router settings.
Start by checking how your group is trying to play
The right joining route depends on the platforms involved. Larian lists PC, Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation 5 as supported for cross-play in its Patch 8 announcement. Cross-play is distinct from same-platform multiplayer: a cross-platform group should use the Cross-Play lobby, not assume that a same-platform direct-connection option applies.
For cross-play between platforms
- Each player should link their platform account to a Larian account and enable cross-play in the game’s Options under Gameplay.
- Add one another through the Larian Friends List using Larian account names.
- Open Multiplayer and use the Cross-Play tab to create or join the session.
- If you are continuing an existing campaign, enable cross-play on that save before loading it. Larian’s May 20, 2025 Hotfix 32 notes clarify that the save itself needs this setting. Direct Connection is not available within cross-play settings.
Larian’s cross-play support instructions cover account linking, the Cross-Play lobby, and save settings.
For same-storefront PC play
Larian’s general multiplayer FAQ describes invitations, the online lobby, and Direct Connection using the host’s Server ID or IP address for groups where everyone uses Steam or everyone uses GOG. Try those options only for the relevant same-storefront PC setup; they are not a substitute for the Cross-Play lobby. The FAQ is marked for PC, Mac, and GOG, so do not assume every PC-specific instruction applies to console players.

Rule out mod mismatches
Try hosting or joining with mods disabled. If the unmodded session works, mods or mod versions may be the cause. For cross-play with mods, Larian says all players need the exact same mods and versions. When launching a cross-play game, the Mod Verification window can help identify missing or mismatched mods.
Larian’s Patch 8 announcement says consoles have a limit of 100 mods and cannot use third-party mods. If a PC-hosted modded session includes console or Mac players, check each mod’s compatibility tags rather than assuming it works across platforms.

Find out whether the problem follows a player, host, or join route
Change one variable at a time. Testing in pairs can reveal whether one player or a particular system combination is involved; switching hosts can show whether the issue follows the host. Larian’s multiplayer troubleshooting FAQ also suggests comparing lobby and invitation routes.
- Create a lobby, return to the main menu, and try joining again.
- Compare an invitation with joining through the lobby. For the same-storefront Steam or GOG PC case, also test Direct Connection.
- Try again at a different time or, if possible, on another network.
- Compare Wi-Fi with a wired Ethernet connection. This is a diagnostic test: it can help identify whether the connection path is involved, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
- Verify the game files through Steam or GOG Galaxy.
- Temporarily check whether non-essential software, such as antivirus, firewall, overlays, or chat programs, is interfering.
If the group still cannot connect, record which players can join which host, the platforms and storefronts involved, the join method, and whether mods are enabled. That information helps distinguish a player-specific issue from a host or network problem.

Change router settings only as an advanced check
Larian’s FAQ mentions checking UPnP, DMZ, and port-forwarding settings on an existing router. These are advanced network checks, not guaranteed fixes; avoid changing settings unless you understand their effect on your network. The FAQ also requests diagnostic details, including a DxDiag report and log files, for persistent problems on an affected PC. If troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, contact Larian Support with the error and the connection details you recorded.
Fix the specific “You’re already connected” error
Use this branch only if the message reads “Joining failed – You’re already connected.” Larian says that on PC, the player manifest in AppData can contain another person’s UUID, which may happen when a PC, account, or saves are shared. Its listed remedy involves resetting the BG3 folder, so preserve your saves before removing anything.
Rank #4
- Disable cloud saves.
- Back up your saves to a safe location.
- Delete the BG3 folder in AppData as described in Larian’s error-specific instructions.
- Relaunch the game so it creates a fresh folder, then restore the save files you want to keep.
This is a PC-specific remedy for that exact error, not a general first step for multiplayer connection failures.
