If the Owlbear Cub is missing from the Goblin Camp in Baldur’s Gate 3, first confirm it survived the Owlbear Cave encounter, then take a Long Rest and check the camp again. The chicken chase is optional: it does not recruit the cub by itself. Finding it at the Goblin Camp, freeing it, and inviting it to your camp are separate steps.

Check the Owlbear Cave sequence

The cub must survive the encounter in the Owlbear Nest in the Forest near the Blighted Village. The mother does not have to survive. In the walkthrough’s described paths, the cub can appear at the Goblin Camp after a Long Rest if it was spared.

If you met the mother in the scene

You can retreat from the encounter and leave the cub alive. The walkthrough says the cub can be found later after a Long Rest.

If you killed the mother

A follow-up scene gives you the opportunity to spare the cub. Make sure it survives that sequence.

If you attacked from stealth

Skipping the initial scene can leave the cub hostile. If it is still alive, flee rather than killing it so it has a chance to appear later.

Take a Long Rest, then check the Goblin Camp

After sparing the cub, take a Long Rest before checking the Goblin Camp. The walkthrough describes this rest as the transition after which the cub reappears there. If you have not rested since the cave encounter, do that first.

Do not treat the chicken chase as a recruitment requirement

Krolla may invite your party to play the chicken chase at the Goblin Camp, but winning—or playing at all—is not required to recruit the cub. Its appearance at the camp is separate from freeing it and inviting it to join your camp.

Separate finding the cub from making it a camp follower

The Goblin Camp events are progression steps, not one automatic recruitment moment. The camp-events reference lists finding the cub, freeing it from the goblins, and inviting it to your camp before its first camp visit. It lists offering food as the trigger for the next appearance; a successful healing check can then establish the permanent camp-follower state. So if you have already found the cub at the Goblin Camp, focus on freeing and inviting it rather than repeating the cave sequence.

Could a bug be involved?

Yes, related Owlbear Cub and Goblin Camp quest-state bugs have appeared in Larian’s historical patch notes. Patch 1 fixed a dialogue-choice issue that could stop the cub from becoming a camp follower when it should. Community Update 14 fixed a case where it spawned and disappeared after all Goblin leaders were killed. Patch 6 addressed a case involving the cub remaining at the Goblin Camp after the goblins left with Minthara, after the cub had been kidnapped following its mother’s death. Patch 7 fixed the cub sometimes disappearing from camp when killing goblins at the Goblin Camp.

These notes document past fixes, not the cause of any particular missing-cub save, and they do not establish a guaranteed recovery step. If the cub survived, you rested, and it still never appeared, the listed quest steps do not identify a definite fix for that save.

Quick checklist

  • The cub survived the Owlbear Cave encounter.
  • You took a Long Rest after sparing it.
  • You checked the Goblin Camp; the chicken chase is not required.
  • If the cub appeared there, you freed it and invited it to your camp.
  • If it remains absent despite those steps, historical bug reports are relevant context, but they do not diagnose your save.
