Patch 8 expanded Baldur’s Gate 3’s official Modding Toolkit so creators can add or override certain template types inside existing levels, including NPCs and interactive objects. It is not a full level editor: the Toolkit still cannot add dialogue or alter static scenery such as buildings and terrain.
What Patch 8 lets modders change
Larian describes the update as “partial level editing.” With the official Toolkit, mod authors can add or override certain supported template types in existing levels. Larian gives NPCs and interactive objects as examples, opening up ways to place or customize some elements within an area without rebuilding the area itself. What the Toolkit still cannot edit
Partial level editing does not provide unrestricted control over an area. Larian says the official Toolkit cannot add dialogue or change static world elements such as buildings, scenery, or terrain. The practical distinction is between supported templates that can be added or overridden and the fixed environment and dialogue content around them.
So the update is meaningful for creators who want to populate existing locations with supported objects or NPCs, but it does not turn the Toolkit into a campaign editor or a way to redesign every part of a level.

Who can use the official Toolkit
The Modding Toolkit is a separate, free download from Steam for Windows PC. Larian says it is not available on Mac or consoles; players on those platforms may be able to install supported mods, but they cannot use the official creation tools there. The Toolkit requires a 64-bit processor and operating system and 160 GB of available storage. These are Larian’s published requirements, not independent performance testing. How official mod distribution and multiplayer fit in
Larian’s supported mod pipeline uses mod.io for functions including downloading mods, managing uploads, hosting guides, and content moderation. Mods installed outside that supported system may not include update checks or multiplayer syncing, and Larian says it cannot provide full technical support for crashes caused by unsupported systems. Its earlier modding support announcement explained that direct level editing and core game changes were initially outside cross-platform support; Patch 8 later introduced this narrower, supported form of level editing.
For modded cross-play, Larian says every player in a lobby must have the same mod versions. Console players cannot use third-party mods, and Larian’s announcement states a 100-mod limit for console users. These multiplayer and platform rules are separate from the Toolkit’s editing scope: they affect how supported mods are installed and used, not what templates a creator can edit.

Patch 8’s place in the game’s update history
Larian described Patch 8 as the last game patch planned to introduce new content, while allowing for minor bug fixes. That was the studio’s statement at the time, rather than a claim that no maintenance update could follow.
