Baldur’s Gate 3: The Character Portrait Glitch Was Fixed After Patch 8

The Baldur’s Gate 3 portrait glitch was listed as fixed in Hotfix #33—not Patch 8. Here’s what Larian’s notes say and what they don’t prove.

Patch 8 did not list a fix for Baldur’s Gate 3’s weird character portraits. Larian included the issue in its later Hotfix #33 notes, published July 31, 2025, where it said the “weird character portraits” were fixed. The studio’s joking, hedged wording is not independent confirmation that every instance disappeared.

When was the portrait glitch fixed?

Larian listed the portrait issue in Hotfix #33, released July 31, 2025, as version 4.1.1.6897358. The entry appears under “UI and Tooltips”: “Fixed, probably this time really maybe, the weird character portraits.”

The joke matters: it communicates Larian’s stated fix, not a guarantee that all players’ portrait problems were resolved. The studio’s news index described the outcome with the recognizable line, “Shadowheart will no longer look like she’s on a Zoom call.” That is colorful shorthand, not a formal bug name or a measure of how widespread the issue was.

What Patch 8 changed—and what it did not

Larian announced Patch 8 as Baldur’s Gate 3’s final major update on April 15, 2025. Its headline additions included cross-play, Photo Mode, 12 new subclasses, Xbox Series S split-screen, and an update to the Modding Toolkit, alongside bug fixes and improvements. But the character-portrait fix was not listed in Patch 8’s notes; it appears in Hotfix #33 instead. Read the Patch 8 announcement for the update’s features.

Was this officially the game’s “most annoying” glitch?

No ranking or statistic in the reviewed official notes establishes that. “Most annoying” is a subjective description, and Larian did not publish a player-count or prevalence figure for the portrait issue. The notes also list other, distinct problems around this period: Hotfix #33 mentions controller radial-menu lag, while the studio separately used “kaleidoscope of colours” language for an issue associated with Hotfix #31. Those should not be conflated with the character portraits.

Did a later update revisit the portrait problem?

Larian’s Hotfix #36, dated March 26, 2026, is later than Hotfix #33. Its notes identify fixes for a save-loading frame-rate drop that could lead to a crash, other crashes, Xbox inventory and trade tooltips, and a Mac Honour Mode character-creation progression issue. They do not announce another portrait fix. Hotfix #36 is version 4.1.1.7209685; see Larian’s Hotfix #36 notes.

What players should take away

  • If you saw headlines tying the portrait fix to Patch 8, the timeline is off: Larian listed it in Hotfix #33, released July 31, 2025.
  • Larian said it fixed the weird portraits, but the playful qualification in the note is not proof that every case was eliminated.
  • The official notes reviewed here do not give a prevalence figure or establish an objective “most annoying” ranking.
