Which Ranger subclass is best in BG3?
Gloom Stalker is the best default pick if you want a Ranger built around stealth, ambushes, and making the most of the opening turn. A third-party ranking updated June 2, 2026, also puts it first, but that ranking is editorial analysis—not an official Larian tier list or a quantified comparison of damage. Choose based on the kind of combat you enjoy, rather than treating one subclass as objectively best for every party.

When comparing the four, consider whether you care most about opening-turn impact, steady or multi-target weapon damage, a companion, or battlefield control—and how much tactical setup you want. Available comparisons do not establish a complete, quantified damage ranking across all four subclasses.
What changed with Patch 8?
Patch 8 added Swarmkeeper, bringing the Ranger subclass choice to four. Larian’s Patch 8 notes identify Swarmkeeper as new and state that Rangers choose their subclass at level 3. The patch was the last planned game patch to introduce new content, though Larian said minor bug fixing could still occur; that does not rule out later hotfixes. See Larian’s Patch 8 notes.

The earlier announcement described Patch 8 as adding one subclass to each of the game’s 12 classes, alongside new abilities, animations, visual effects, summons, and cantrips. That is why pre-Patch 8 Ranger guides do not include Swarmkeeper: Larian’s Community Update #30.
Which feats should a Ranger take?
There is no verified, current, universally optimal feat order established by the available sources. GameSpot’s August 2023 guide lists Ability Improvement and Sharpshooter as options for a ranged Ranger, and Dual Wielder for a melee build. Treat these as older candidate options, not a Patch 8-validated prescription: the guide predates Swarmkeeper and does not establish a current definitive sequence. GameSpot’s Ranger guide

The current material supports choosing a subclass by playstyle and identifying older feat candidates, but it does not establish a complete level-by-level build. It does not verify an ability-score spread, equipment list, feat progression, spell progression, or multiclass route as optimal in the current implementation. Avoid treating a single detailed sequence as proven best without current in-game validation.

For a practical starting point, decide first whether you want Gloom Stalker’s stealth-and-ambush identity, Hunter’s direct weapon focus, Beast Master’s companion, or Swarmkeeper’s creature-themed control. Then choose ranged or melee play and treat the older feat examples as candidates rather than rules. The cited sources do not provide enough current evidence to prescribe more.
