Choose Berserker for aggressive attacks and throwing, Giant for size-based throwing, Wildheart for a role you can tune, or Wild Magic for unpredictable effects and support. Your subclass arrives at Barbarian level 3; feats or ability-score improvements arrive at class levels 4, 8, and 12.
Which Barbarian subclass is best?
The current game reference lists four Barbarian subclasses: Berserker, Giant, Wild Magic, and Wildheart. Giant was added in Patch 8, which Larian described as the game’s last major patch when it launched on April 15, 2025. The game reference lists Hotfix 36 as the latest hotfix after that patch; check the in-game version if you need to confirm the latest hotfix status.

No cited source establishes a controlled comparison proving one subclass deals the most damage or wins most often. A useful choice depends on the role you want, how you use your actions and Bonus Actions, and whether you prefer predictable or variable abilities.
| Subclass | What it offers | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Berserker | Frenzy at level 3 grants Frenzied Strike and Enraged Throw. | Aggressive melee attacks or a throwing-focused character. Pay attention to Bonus Action demands when combining it with other classes. |
| Giant | Path of the Giants emphasizes increased size and physical strength. Its progression includes Giant’s Rage, Vaprak’s Greed, Elemental Cleaver, Boot of the Giants, and Mighty Impel. | A size- and throwing-centered style, including throwing enemies or companions. |
| Wild Magic | Features include Rage: Wild Magic, Magic Awareness, Bolstering Magic features, and Unstable Backlash. | Players who want variable magical effects and party-support utility rather than fully predictable output. |
| Wildheart | At level 3, choose one of five Bestial Hearts: Bear, Eagle, Elk, Tiger, or Wolf. Wildheart also grants Speak with Animals. | A flexible animal-themed Rage suited to durability, mobility, attacks, or helping nearby allies. |
What does each Wildheart choice do?
Wildheart is not one fixed package: its Bestial Heart determines the emphasis of its features. The BG3 Wiki’s Wildheart reference describes the choices as follows.

- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes

- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. - Bear: Emphasizes resistance and durability.
- Eagle: Favors mobility and Diving Strike.
- Elk: Provides movement and a charge.
- Tiger: Offers a multi-target attack and increased jump distance.
- Wolf: Supports nearby allies by granting melee attack advantage.
Pick for the job you want your Rage to do: withstand pressure, reposition, close distance, attack multiple targets, or improve allies’ melee attacks.
Barbarian level milestones and feats
For a pure Barbarian, the class’s main decision points are subclass selection at level 3, Extra Attack at level 5, subclass features at levels 6 and 10, and feat or ability-score improvement selections at levels 4, 8, and 12.

| Barbarian class level | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 3 | Choose a subclass. |
| 4 | Choose a feat or ability-score improvement. |
| 5 | Gain Extra Attack. |
| 6 | Gain a subclass feature. |
| 8 | Choose a feat or ability-score improvement. |
| 10 | Gain a subclass feature. |
| 12 | Choose a feat or ability-score improvement. |
Choose feats in light of your weapon style, desired Strength score, attack accuracy, and any specific build requirements. A pure Barbarian gets three feat or ability-score improvement selections across 12 class levels. Multiclassing changes which class milestones you reach, so plan the full level split before treating a feat sequence as guaranteed.
A throwing-focused multiclass example
For players who specifically want to throw, PC Gamer recommends a Berserker Barbarian 5 / Thief Rogue 4 / Champion Fighter 3 build. It is a specialized example, not proof that this is the best Barbarian build for every role.

- Contains Enhanced Editions of Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, & Siege of Dragonspear
- Baldur's Gate - Since its original release in 1998, Baldur's Gate has set the standard for Dungeons & Dragons computer roleplaying games.
- Baldur's Gate II - Continue a journey started in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition or create an entirely new character in this isometric Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game.
- Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear - Adds a new chapter to the Bhaalspawn saga. The events occurring between Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II are at last revealed in this 25-hour adventure.
- Reach Barbarian 4 and take Tavern Brawler. The feat provides +1 Strength in the cited build.
- Continue Barbarian to level 5. This reaches Extra Attack and the build’s Berserker foundation.
- Take Rogue to level 4 and choose Thief. PC Gamer explains the synergy as Berserker bonus-action throws while raging combined with the Thief’s extra Bonus Action.
- Take Fighter to level 3 and choose Champion.
- At Rogue 4, choose Strength +2 or Alert, as in PC Gamer’s example.
PC Gamer’s equipment list for this build includes Returning Pike, Ring of Flinging, Gloves of Uninhibited Kushigo, and Lightning Jabber. These are in-game items. The key tradeoff is that multiclass levels are committed to Rogue and Fighter rather than Barbarian, changing which Barbarian-level features and feat milestones you reach.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a build without chasing a false ranking
- Start with your role. Choose between a durable frontline, mobile melee attacker, ally-supporting Wildheart, or throwing-oriented character.
- Check action economy. Berserker’s Frenzy options and a multiclass’s Bonus Action features can compete for the same turn. A combination is useful only if its actions fit together in play.
- Protect key milestones. Barbarian level 5 brings Extra Attack; multiclassing before that delays it. A multiclass also changes access to Barbarian’s level-6 and level-10 subclass features and its class-level feat milestones.
- Match feats to the plan. Tavern Brawler belongs to the cited throwing build example, not automatically to every Barbarian. For other styles, make feat choices around weapons, accuracy, and Strength goals.
- Choose how much variability you enjoy. Wild Magic’s effects are variable; Wildheart lets you choose a specific Bestial Heart, while Berserker and Giant focus on distinct aggressive or throwing-oriented mechanics.
The available feature summaries and build example do not provide named, dated comparative damage, win-rate, or completion-time statistics. Treat “best” as a fit for your preferred role and progression, not a measured universal ranking.
