For a straightforward combat Rogue, Thief is the strongest all-round pick; Assassin suits players who plan stealthy openings, while Arcane Trickster is best for magic and utility. This ranking covers the three original Rogue subclasses. Patch 8 later added Swashbuckler, so these are not every Rogue option in the current game. The order is a practical recommendation for a pure Rogue, not a measured damage or win-rate ranking.

These comparisons describe how the subclasses’ documented features tend to serve different playstyles; they are not experimentally measured outcomes. BG3 changes some tabletop rules, so use the game’s mechanics rather than assuming a tabletop Rogue feature works the same way.
1. Thief: the most dependable combat pick
Thief’s defining feature is Fast Hands, which grants an additional bonus action each round in BG3. It can enable another off-hand attack for a dual-wielding Rogue or give the character more room to use another bonus-action option. Because it is available throughout combat rather than hinging on a particular opening, it is the simplest subclass benefit to build around.
Who should choose Thief?
- Choose Thief if you want a repeatable combat advantage without having to engineer an ambush.
- It is especially attractive when your build regularly has useful bonus actions, including off-hand attacks.
- Its advantage depends on having a worthwhile way to use the extra action; it does not improve every build equally.
Thief also gets Second-Story Work, which grants resistance to falling damage in BG3, and Supreme Sneak, an invisibility effect usable once per Short Rest. Those add mobility and stealth options, while Fast Hands remains the main reason for its top position in this combat-oriented ranking.

2. Assassin: strongest when you control the opening
Assassin rewards scouting and initiating combat on favorable terms. Assassin’s Alacrity restores the Assassin’s action and bonus action at the start of combat, and other subclass features reward attacking enemies before they have acted or striking surprised targets. Larian’s Patch 5 notes, published November 30, 2023, specifically record a fix so Assassins get their action back on the first turn of combat.
When Assassin makes sense
- Pick Assassin if you enjoy scouting, positioning, and deliberately starting fights.
- Its opening-round payoff can be strong when the encounter supports those features.
- Do not count on surprise in every encounter: its relative value falls when combat begins without preparation or the conditions its features reward.
That setup dependence puts Assassin behind Thief as a general recommendation, but it can be the better fit for a player who consistently plans the first strike.

3. Arcane Trickster: Rogue utility with spellcasting
Arcane Trickster adds Wizard spellcasting and Mage Hand Legerdemain. In BG3, the Mage Hand is invisible and lasts until the caster’s next Long Rest; the spell can be cast once per Short Rest. The subclass also receives additional first-level spell slots at Rogue level 10. These tools offer more ways to approach problems than weapon attacks alone, though their value depends on spell selection and the situation.
Who should choose Arcane Trickster?
- Choose it if you want a magical theme, spell options, and creative utility on your Rogue.
- It suits players who value flexible problem-solving more than the most direct, repeatable weapon-combat benefit.
- Its limited spell resources and additional choices may feel less straightforward than Thief’s extra bonus action.
What about Swashbuckler?
Patch 8 added Swashbuckler to BG3, expanding the Rogue roster beyond the three original subclasses ranked here. Larian’s Community Update #30, published November 27, 2024, announced new subclasses as part of the update; the BG3-specific Swashbuckler implementation includes Dirty Tricks. It is excluded from this ranking because the comparison is limited to the original trio, not because it is unavailable.

Why this ranking is specific to BG3
Baldur’s Gate 3 adapts tabletop Dungeons & Dragons rules and does not use every tabletop feature progression unchanged. In particular, Thief’s Fast Hands in BG3 grants an additional bonus action each round, while Assassin’s Alacrity has a game-specific first-turn effect. Tabletop Rogue rules—including the updated rules in the 2024 Player’s Handbook—are not a reliable substitute for checking how a feature works in BG3.
No comparable subclass damage, win-rate, or player-preference statistics are established here. The ranking is therefore a feature-based recommendation: Thief for consistent combat flexibility, Assassin for planned openings, and Arcane Trickster for magic and utility.
