If Sneak Attack is unavailable or does not trigger in Baldur’s Gate 3, check the weapon first, then confirm you meet the target and attack-roll conditions. Next, check the reaction setting and whether you already used the feature this round. Most failures come down to one of those conditions; Larian has also documented a specific projectile-action bug fixed in Patch 8.
Check whether your weapon qualifies
Sneak Attack requires a finesse weapon. For a melee attack, confirm the weapon you have equipped has the Finesse property; an unarmed strike does not qualify as a main-hand finesse weapon attack. A finesse weapon can still use Strength for its attack if your Strength is higher than your Dexterity. The BG3 community wiki’s Sneak Attack entry documents these rules.
Thrown finesse weapons can also trigger Sneak Attack, but that does not make every thrown weapon eligible. Check the weapon’s property rather than assuming any melee or thrown attack will work.
Meet one of the target conditions
For the ordinary Sneak Attack rule, you need either Advantage against the target or an ally within 1.5 m (5 ft) of that target. The ally-near-target route also requires that you do not have Disadvantage on the attack. In other words, an ally’s position is measured relative to the enemy, not relative to you.

Being hidden is not itself the rule for Sneak Attack. Hiding may help you gain Advantage, but if you do not have Advantage, check whether an ally is close enough to the target and whether your attack is disadvantaged. The wiki describes these eligibility conditions in its Sneak Attack rules.
Resolve Disadvantage
If you are relying on an ally standing near the target, Disadvantage blocks that route. Check the attack preview or other combat indicators for Disadvantage and address its cause, or gain Advantage so the attack is no longer disadvantaged. Stealth alone does not override Disadvantage.

A Patch 8 Rogue subclass feature is described as an exception: it can allow Sneak Attack without Advantage when the Rogue is within 1.5 m (5 ft) of the target and has no Disadvantage. This is subclass-specific, not a replacement for the baseline rule for every Rogue; see the community wiki’s Patch 8 summary.
Choose direct use or configure the reaction
Sneak Attack can be selected as its own melee or ranged action. It can also be offered as a reaction after a qualifying weapon attack hits. If you expected a prompt, or expected the extra damage to happen automatically, check the Reactions tab and set Sneak Attack to the behavior you want. The wiki documents both the melee and ranged options: Sneak Attack (Melee) and Sneak Attack (Ranged).

Using the direct action and using the post-hit reaction are different ways to apply the same feature; the reaction setting affects whether and how the game offers that post-hit use. Also check that the attack itself is of the appropriate type: a ranged Sneak Attack reaction follows another ranged weapon attack, while the melee option follows a qualifying melee weapon attack.
Check whether you already used Sneak Attack
Sneak Attack is limited to once per round/turn and refreshes after the Rogue’s turn ends, according to the BG3 community wiki. If it worked earlier in the turn cycle, its direct action may no longer be available. Reaction timing can also affect availability on your next turn, so consider whether a reaction-triggered Sneak Attack was already spent.

Update if the attack spawns extra projectiles
If the problem occurs with an action that creates additional projectiles, check that the game is updated. Larian’s official Patch 8 notes say: “Fixed Sneak Attack not activating for actions that spawn additional projectiles, like Curving Shot.” That is a documented fix for a specific kind of attack, not evidence that every unavailable Sneak Attack is a current bug.
Quick troubleshooting order
- Confirm that your attack uses a finesse weapon; for melee, check the equipped weapon’s Finesse property.
- Check that you have Advantage, or that an ally is within 1.5 m (5 ft) of the target and you have no Disadvantage.
- Decide whether to select Sneak Attack directly or use it as a post-hit reaction; review the Reactions tab if the prompt or automatic behavior is unexpected.
- Check whether you already used Sneak Attack during the current turn cycle.
- If the attack spawns additional projectiles, verify that Patch 8 or a later update is installed.
If none of these checks explains the failure, the available rules do not establish a general current bug or a platform-specific fix. The useful details for narrowing down an unexplained case are your platform, game version, weapon, action used, and reaction configuration.
