If Baldur’s Gate 3 gets stuck on a loading screen on PC, there is no single confirmed cause based on that symptom alone. Note exactly where it stops, then test one change at a time: launch without mods, switch between Vulkan and DirectX 11, verify the game files if you use Steam, and check the graphics configuration. These are troubleshooting checks, not guaranteed fixes; Larian’s guidance covers related startup, gameplay-crash, graphics, and mod issues.
First, identify which loading screen is stuck
The point of failure helps narrow down what to test. Record whether the game stops during startup, after the title screen while loading a save, or while joining multiplayer. Also note your storefront, whether you have mods installed or used them previously, and any error message. Larian’s bug-report guidance asks for context that helps describe and investigate a problem.
- During startup: begin with the startup-crash checks below.
- When loading a save: test mods and graphics settings, but do not assume that the installation is the cause. Larian notes that corrupt files can cause problems, usually while saving or loading.
- In multiplayer: record that detail and whether the issue happens before or after joining. Avoid treating a startup fix as a confirmed solution for a multiplayer-specific failure.

Try these fixes one at a time
1. Test the game without mods
Disable mods using the game’s supported mod workflow, then retry the same loading step. If you have used mods before, removing them from a list may not be enough to isolate the problem: old mod files can remain in the local AppData folder. Check Larian’s current mod-issues instructions for the relevant local-data location and steps. The local game-data area identified in current guidance is %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3; exact details can vary with game version and mod setup. Avoid deleting saves or profile folders as an initial test.

Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
Retry after changing the mod state before moving to another step. That makes it easier to tell whether the test changed the result.
2. Switch between Vulkan and DirectX 11
Use the launcher to try the other graphics API: switch to DirectX 11 if the game was using Vulkan, or test Vulkan if it was using DirectX 11. Larian recommends this as a troubleshooting check for related crashes. It tests the rendering path; it is not a universal performance recommendation or a guaranteed loading-screen fix. Retry the same action after switching.

3. Verify the game files in Steam
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Baldur’s Gate 3 and choose Properties.
- Open Local Files and select Verify Integrity of Game Files…. The wording or location may vary with the Steam client version.
- When the check finishes, try loading the game again.
This checks the local installation. It does not test whether a mod is incompatible or establish that a particular save is intact. If you use another storefront, the Steam steps do not apply; consult Larian’s gameplay-crash guidance for its troubleshooting options.
4. Check the graphics configuration and selected adapter
Larian’s graphics troubleshooting guidance includes recreating graphics settings by renaming or deleting graphicSettings.lsx in the local game folder. Before changing the file, preserve a copy and follow the instructions that match your installed version.

Also check that the game is using your dedicated NVIDIA or AMD graphics adapter rather than integrated graphics or Microsoft Basic Renderer, where applicable. This is a different check from switching Vulkan and DirectX 11: the API test changes the rendering path, while adapter selection checks which graphics hardware the game uses.

- Where loading stops and what action triggers it
- Whether mods are installed or were used previously
- Which graphics API you tested and what happened
- Whether Steam file verification found or replaced files, if applicable
- Any error text, relevant logs, or system diagnostics requested by Larian
