To complete The Chosen of Shar in Act Two, collect four Umbral Gems in the Gauntlet of Shar, retrieve the Spear of Night from the Silent Library if Shadowheart is with you, and take Shadowheart into the Shadowfell. There, she decides whether to spare or kill the Nightsong, Dame Aylin—a choice that shapes her companion story and has major consequences for Last Light Inn.
How to complete The Chosen of Shar
1. Enter the Gauntlet of Shar
In Act Two, follow the route from the Grand Mausoleum into the Gauntlet of Shar. The trials and the decisions at their end are part of Shadowheart’s companion and Origin story.
2. Complete the trials and collect four Umbral Gems
You need four Umbral Gems to reach the Nightsong. Three come from the Trials of Shar; the fourth comes from Yurgir. Make sure you have all four before proceeding to the Shadowfell.
3. Retrieve the Spear of Night
If Shadowheart is in your party, get the Spear of Night from the Silent Library before dealing with the Nightsong. The spear is relevant to the encounter and to the rewards available afterward.

- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
4. Take Shadowheart into the Shadowfell
Keep Shadowheart with the party and bring her into the Shadowfell. She is required there to complete this quest. If you return without her, she confronts the party and permanently leaves.
5. Make the Nightsong decision
The Nightsong is Dame Aylin, an aasimar held captive by Balthazar’s necromancy for Ketheric Thorm. Shadowheart’s decision about Aylin determines whether she rejects Shar’s demand or becomes a Dark Justiciar. Either way, the party still proceeds toward a confrontation with Ketheric Thorm.

Should Shadowheart spare or kill the Nightsong?
Neither route is universally right: choose according to your roleplay goals, the Shadowheart outcome you want, and whether you are willing to accept the consequences for Last Light Inn.
| Choice | Shadowheart’s path | Aylin and Last Light Inn | Spear and reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spare Aylin | Shadowheart rejects Shar’s demand and loses Shar’s favor. | Aylin survives and flies to face Ketheric. Last Light Inn’s protection is not lost as a result of killing Aylin. | After the Ketheric fight and a camp conversation, Aylin gives Shadowheart Selûne’s Spear of Night. |
| Kill Aylin | Shadowheart becomes a Dark Justiciar. | Aylin is lost. Isobel’s protection over Last Light Inn fails, leaving its inhabitants exposed to the Shadow Curse. | Shadowheart receives Shar’s Spear of Evening. |
Can earlier choices change Shadowheart’s dialogue?
Yes. The game tracks six Nightsong Points across the first two acts. Reaching four or more causes Shadowheart to begin doubting her devotion to Shar and unlocks otherwise hidden dialogue with the Nightsong. Earlier companion interactions can therefore affect which conversation options are available at the decision point.

Larian’s Patch 7 notes document fixes for Shadowheart failing to receive the Spear of Night when speaking with the Nightsong alone, and for her continuing to request the spear after it had already been acquired. If your sequence or journal does not match a guide, check your game version and quest journal before assuming the quest is irrecoverably broken.

Where does Shadowheart’s story go next?
The Chosen of Shar is part of the larger Daughter of Darkness companion story, which continues in Act Three. That later story includes further consequential decisions, so this Act Two choice is an important step rather than the end of Shadowheart’s arc.
