Harper Yonas’s story in Baldur’s Gate 3 is an Act Two encounter, not a separate formal quest. On the route into the Shadow-Cursed Lands via the Grymforge lift, a Shadow takes Yonas and the party must fight him after he is transformed. The encounter leads toward Last Light Inn, where you can return his Harper Blade to Meygan.
Where to find Harper Yonas
Yonas appears in Act Two on the Grymforge-side approach to the Shadow-Cursed Lands. The sequence is associated with the wider Seek Protection from the Shadow Curse progression, rather than a standalone Yonas quest. The exact order of Act Two events can vary with your route and choices, so this is not necessarily the first encounter every party will have in the region.
As the party approaches a group of Harper scouts led by Lassandra, a Shadow takes Yonas. He cries, “I can’t see anything. Something’s wrong. Who’s there? Meg? Is that – argh!” The curse transforms him into shadow-cursed undead, and a fight begins against him and the other Shadows.
What happens after the fight
After the Shadows are defeated, Lassandra speaks with the party and points them toward Last Light Inn as a safe location. This is the Grymforge-side sequence described in the broader Infiltrate Moonrise Towers progression; it connects Yonas’s encounter to the party’s next steps in the Shadow-Cursed Lands.

At Last Light Inn, Meygan mourns Yonas. If you have recovered his Harper Blade, you can return it to her; the Yonas entry says she gives gold in return. The blade handover is the encounter’s personal aftermath, rather than the completion of a separate Yonas questline.
Can you save Yonas?
A community-wiki note describes an experimental exploit, reported as working from Patch 6 onward: cast Polymorph on Yonas, then use non-lethal attacks in an attempt to free him from the curse. It is not a reliable story route. The attempt may kill him, and even a reported rescue can leave him without dialogue or interaction. Current behavior is not confirmed by official Larian patch documentation, so treat it as an uncertain exploit rather than a supported way to resolve the encounter.

Why it is called a “secret quest”
The “secret quest” phrasing is useful for finding Yonas’s story, but the available quest references do not establish a formal quest dedicated to him. His story consists of the ambush and transformation, Lassandra’s direction to Last Light Inn, and the opportunity to return his blade to Meygan. For the broader objective of surviving the curse and reaching shelter, see Seek Protection from the Shadow Curse.
