There is no universally best encounter: the right choice depends on which eligible fights remain in your run and whether the battlefield is safe for a chaotic summon.
What Lump’s War Horn does
The item commonly called the ogre horn is Lump’s War Horn. After the party persuades Lump to work for them in the Blighted Village, he gives them the horn. Sounding it calls Lump, Chock, and Fank into the current conflict as neutral combatants who fight for the party.
The ogres are not treated as party allies once combat begins. Ally-only spells and effects therefore do not work on them, so plan around their presence as independent combatants rather than assuming you can support them like a companion.
Where the horn works
The horn is restricted to Act One areas. It works in the Underdark, but not on the Rosymorn Monastery Trail. The reference also says it can work if the party returns to Act One after leaving, so the boundary is based on the area rather than simply whether the party has progressed beyond Act One once.

Choose a fight with safe targets
Use the horn when the added fighters could meaningfully help and the ogres have clear hostile targets. Do not summon them in an area with no other creatures: the horn’s reference page warns that they turn on the party in that situation. If the only nearby creatures are non-hostile to the party, the ogres may attack them and pull those creatures into combat.
Before calling, check the battlefield for friendly or neutral characters as well as enemies. A fight that is difficult but crowded with bystanders can be a worse choice than a somewhat easier encounter with clearly hostile targets and room for the ogres to engage safely.

How many calls you can make
The character reference says the horn can be used three times. After a fight, Lump requires a new or better incentive before answering another call, and that incentive must be accepted. If the party promised gold, he collects after the first fight; if the horn is never used, he may later come to camp to collect. The page describes paying him or intimidating him as ways to handle that demand.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the fight in range? Confirm that it is in an eligible Act One area, including the Underdark but excluding the Rosymorn Monastery Trail.
- Would three extra combatants matter? Save the call for a fight where the extra pressure is valuable rather than spending it casually.
- Are there safe targets? Make sure hostile enemies are present and nearby allies or neutral creatures are unlikely to be attacked.
- Do you want to preserve another call? Account for the horn’s three-use limit and the need to negotiate a new or better incentive after a fight.
The available reference information documents these constraints but does not establish a single optimal named encounter or compare fights through testing. Treat any suggested battle as an example for your own run, not a guaranteed best use.

Where to get the horn
Lump and his two companions are found in the ruined schoolhouse in the Blighted Village. The party can persuade them to work for money or promise them the flesh of fallen enemies; once Lump agrees, he hands over the horn. The community-maintained Blighted Village and Lump references provide the encounter and character details.
