It borrows GeoGuessr’s visual deduction loop, but the answer is a county- or precinct-level election margin—not a place name. A street scene can offer clues; it is not a representative survey of the people who live there.
How BallotGuessr works
The current landing page features a 2024 US presidential election mode. In each round, you analyze a Google Street View image and guess how residents voted. The game presents five rounds, allows 30 seconds per round, and awards up to 1,000 points in total. The landing page also lists a Heads-Up Match and a Daily Challenge. BallotGuessr’s landing page
In the launch-era version described by Engadget on March 12, 2026, players used contextual details in Street View to infer a county’s result, then moved a slider to estimate whether the Democratic or Republican ticket won and by how many points. Engadget described five 30-second rounds in the Daily Challenge. That article captures an early version; the official site’s current dataset and mode listings have since expanded. Which elections and places can you play?
BallotGuessr’s current About page lists ten datasets across five countries. Six are US datasets; the remaining four cover Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France. US options vary by election year and geographic unit:

The About page attributes some US presidential precinct results to The New York Times, 2022 House data to MEDSL/Harvard Dataverse, county presidential data to tonmc on GitHub, and county shapefiles to US Census TIGER/Line. These are the sources the game identifies for its underlying data, not an independent assessment of every dataset’s quality. BallotGuessr About page
The official development log dates the public launch to March 10, 2026, and records the subsequent addition of US 2024 precinct play, 2020 and 2016 precinct datasets, 2022 House results, and datasets for Canada, the UK, Germany, and France. It later records a county-level 2024 US mode. The current About page is the clearest source for what is listed now. BallotGuessr development log

How locations are selected—and what that does not prove
The developer says locations are selected with population-weighted algorithms, deduplication, and verified Google Street View coverage. The About page also says margins above 50 points or below −50 points are excluded from gameplay, and credits Google Maps Platform for the Street View imagery. Those are the developer’s descriptions; the page does not provide a full methodology audit or error analysis. BallotGuessr About page
Population weighting and deduplication may shape which places appear, but they do not make a particular scene representative of everyone in its county or precinct. A storefront, yard sign, road, or building can suggest context; it cannot establish the political preferences of all residents. Treat the image as a clue in a game, not as polling evidence or a reliable method for predicting an area’s vote.

How the scoring works
Each round is worth up to 200 points. The About page gives the scoring function as score = 200 × e−(error / 32)², where the error is the difference between your estimate and the actual margin. It says a guess that is 10 points off earns about 180 points, and that every guess earns at least 10 points. Five rounds therefore add up to a maximum of 1,000 points. BallotGuessr About page
The practical goal is to estimate the margin, not merely pick the winning party: a correct winner with a far-off margin can score worse than a closer estimate. The game’s listed formula rewards proximity to the result.

BallotGuessr versus GeoGuessr
Both games use visual deduction, but they ask for different answers. GeoGuessr’s core task is to deduce a location from a Street View panorama; BallotGuessr uses a Street View scene as context for estimating an election result. GeoGuessr’s official site
| Question | GeoGuessr | BallotGuessr |
|---|---|---|
| What do you guess? | The location shown in a Street View panorama | The election result and margin for a county or precinct |
| What evidence is central? | The panorama and its geographic clues | A Street View scene, interpreted alongside the selected election dataset |
| What is a round about? | Identifying a place | Estimating a local election margin |
| Current scope described by the sources | Location-guessing game; the official site also lists organization play and collaboration offerings | Ten listed datasets across five countries, with US elections at multiple years and geographic levels |
GeoGuessr’s listed education and collaboration offerings do not establish a partnership with BallotGuessr. The two games share a recognizable format, but BallotGuessr’s political inference is its own task.

What the game can—and cannot—teach
BallotGuessr gives players a compact way to engage with election geography: notice local visual details, make a hypothesis, and compare a margin estimate with a recorded result. But the available product information does not establish that playing improves political knowledge or predictive ability. More importantly, visual impressions can invite stereotyping. The result belongs to an electoral unit and its dataset; the street scene is only a selectively sampled view of that place.
