The 60-second answer
bandtest.dll is a 32-bit Westwood Studios BandTest game DLL associated primarily with Command & Conquer: Renegade. It is normally stored in the Renegade installation folder beside the game executable, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The safest fix is to repair or verify the Renegade installation through the EA App or Steam. If you use an older retail or standalone installation, reinstall the game from its original media or a legitimate installer, then apply only patches and mods intended for that edition.

Do not download a random copy of bandtest.dll and place it in a Windows folder. An isolated DLL may be malicious, incomplete, the wrong version, or incompatible with the executable that loads it.
What is bandtest.dll
bandtest.dll has the internal description BandTest and is identified in available file records as a Westwood Studios component. The commonly catalogued file is 32-bit, version 1.0.0.0, and approximately 0.14 MB in size.
It is an application file for an older game environment. It is not:
- A Windows system component
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX system DLL
- A .NET component
- A device driver
- A file that every Command & Conquer game necessarily uses
Its strongest association is with Command & Conquer: Renegade and related Renegade installations. Different editions, patches, Core Patch releases, server tools, and mods may expect different files, so do not assume that every Renegade installation should contain exactly the same build.
Where should the file be located
The legitimate copy should normally be in the game’s own installation directory, such as the folder containing the Renegade executable. The exact path depends on how the game was installed.
To confirm the folder being used:
- Start the EA App or Steam.
- Open the game’s properties or management menu.
- Use the option to browse to the installation folder, if available.
- Locate the main Renegade executable.
- Check whether
BandTest.dllorbandtest.dllis beside it.
Windows file names are not normally case-sensitive, so BandTest.dll and bandtest.dll refer to the same file on a standard Windows installation.
If you have more than one Renegade installation, repair the folder used by the shortcut or launcher that actually starts the game. Repairing a different copy will not resolve the error.

Why the error occurs
The most common causes are:
| Cause | What it usually means | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Missing file | The DLL was deleted, quarantined, or never installed | Repair or reinstall the game |
| Corrupt file | The DLL is truncated or damaged | Verify or reinstall the matching game build |
| Wrong version | The executable and DLL came from different releases | Restore the complete build, then reinstall compatible patches |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed the file | Review Protection history and restore only a verified game file |
| Wrong folder | The launcher is using another installation | Confirm the executable and DLL paths |
| Windows corruption | Broader Windows components are damaged | Run DISM and SFC only when other Windows problems exist |
Fix 1: Repair the installation in the EA App
Use this first if Renegade was installed through the EA App.
- Open the EA App.
- Select Library.
- Find Command & Conquer: Renegade or the relevant Command & Conquer collection.
- Select the game’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Repair.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Start the game from the EA App rather than an old desktop shortcut.
The repair process should restore missing or damaged files from the installed game package. If the game starts afterward, do not manually replace bandtest.dll.
EA repairs can overwrite unofficial modifications or custom files. Back up important mods and configuration files before repairing, then reinstall only versions supported by your Renegade edition.
If Repair reports an error:
- Close the EA App.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the EA App again and repeat Library, the game menu, and Repair.
- If it still fails, uninstall and reinstall the game from the official EA source.
- Test the unmodified installation before adding patches or mods.
Fix 2: Verify the files through Steam
Use Steam’s file verification process if your installation is managed by Steam.
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the relevant game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the check.
- Launch the game from Steam.
Steam should download or replace files that do not match its installation data. Test the game before reinstalling any community patch or mod.
Steam may report that some files failed verification because they are local configuration files. That can be normal. The important result is whether the game’s required files are restored and the error disappears.
If verification does not help, confirm that Steam is launching the same Renegade installation you inspected manually. Multiple copies of the game are a common source of confusion.
Fix 3: Reinstall an older or retail copy
For a retail disc, standalone installer, or older copy that is not managed by EA App or Steam:

- Uninstall the game from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall from the original installation media or a legitimate installer.
- Start the unmodified game once.
- Apply the official or trusted patch intended for that exact edition.
- Start the game again before adding community files.
- Add mods one at a time, testing after each change.
A clean installation is especially important when the problem began after a failed update, Core Patch, Tiberian Technologies patch, or mod installation.
Do not copy only one DLL from another Renegade computer unless both installations are known to be the same edition and build. Replacing one file can create a new mismatch between the executable, libraries, and patch files.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a game DLL after an installation, update, or scan.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
bandtest.dllor the Renegade installation folder. - Check the detected file path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if it came from your legitimate game installation and you have confirmed that the detection is a false positive.
- Run the game repair or verification process afterward.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. Do not disable antivirus merely to download a DLL from an unknown website.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, a system directory, or an unrelated application folder, do not restore it simply because its name is familiar. Scan the computer and reinstall the game from a legitimate source instead.
Fix 5: Resolve a missing-entry-point error
A missing-entry-point error is different from a simple missing-file error. It usually means Windows found a DLL, but the executable expected a function that this particular DLL does not provide.
With Renegade, an error involving Detect_Bandwidth... can indicate that the executable and BandTest.dll came from incompatible patch levels. A severely truncated or corrupt DLL can produce similar symptoms.
Use this recovery sequence:
- Remove or back up recently installed patches, Core Patches, server tools, and mods.
- Repair or verify the base game.
- Start the clean game installation.
- Confirm that the original game launches.
- Install one compatible patch from its supported source.
- Test the game again.
- Reinstall mods one at a time.
Do not solve an entry-point error by downloading a different standalone DLL. The correct repair is to restore the complete matching game build.

Fix 6: Do not place the file in System32 or SysWOW64
Copying bandtest.dll to either of these folders is usually wrong:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Despite its name, System32 is also used for 64-bit system components on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains Windows-on-Windows compatibility components. Neither folder is the normal home for a private Renegade game DLL.
The game normally loads its own copy from its installation directory. Placing another copy in a Windows directory can:
Rank #2
- Video Link to instructions and Free support VIA Amazon
- Great Support fast responce
- 15 plus years of experiance
- Key is included
- Leave the game using the wrong version
- Hide the real installation problem
- Create conflicts with another program
- Make future repairs harder
- Increase the risk of loading an untrusted file
If you have a verified replacement from the same legitimate installation media or a known-good backup, place it beside the game executable, not in a Windows system folder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this game DLL
regsvr32 is designed for self-registering COM and OLE libraries. A game-private runtime DLL such as BandTest.dll normally does not need registration.
Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 bandtest.dll
It may produce an error such as “the specified module could not be found” or “the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found.” That does not indicate that the DLL belongs in System32, and registering it will not repair a missing Renegade dependency.
Use the game’s repair, verification, or reinstallation process instead.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 8: Run DISM and SFC only for broader Windows problems
System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party Renegade DLL.
Use them when the bandtest.dll error is accompanied by wider Windows symptoms, such as broken built-in applications, damaged Windows features, or repeated system-file errors.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Renegade again.
DISM should generally be run before SFC because it repairs the component store that SFC uses. If both commands complete successfully but bandtest.dll is still missing, repair the game installation. SFC and DISM are not substitutes for reinstalling Renegade.
Repeating these commands without knowing what changed is rarely useful. If manually checking Windows components becomes difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues and the full version performs the repair; it is optional, and reinstalling Renegade remains the definitive fix for this game DLL.
Fix 9: Check Windows Features only when the error names one
Do not enable random Windows Features because bandtest.dll is missing. This file is not identified as a .NET, DirectX, or Visual C++ runtime component.
Check the exact error message:
- If it names
MSVCP*.dllorVCRUNTIME*.dll, investigate the appropriate Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. - If it names a DirectX component, install the required Microsoft-supported runtime for the game.
- If it names a .NET component, use Settings > Apps > Optional features or Turn Windows features on or off as appropriate.
- If it mentions only
bandtest.dll, repair Renegade instead.
Installing Microsoft runtimes solely because a third-party game DLL is missing is unlikely to restore that DLL.
Fix 10: Check drivers only when another error points to them
A graphics or audio driver problem can prevent a game from launching, but it does not normally create or restore bandtest.dll.
If Device Manager shows a related warning:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or the category named in the error.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test the game again.
Do not remove a working driver just because the DLL is missing. If driver hunting across multiple hardware vendors is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can show reported outdated drivers and the full version installs updates; it is optional, and repairing the Renegade installation remains the correct fix for bandtest.dll.
Fix 11: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the problem began immediately after a patch, driver installation, software change, or failed update, System Restore may return Windows and installed programs to an earlier restore point.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore process.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
System Restore can roll back installed programs, drivers, registry settings, and system state without removing personal files. It may not restore a deleted game DLL reliably, so use game repair or reinstallation if the file remains absent.
Is a 32-bit DLL normal on 64-bit Windows
Yes. An older 32-bit game can use 32-bit DLLs while running on 64-bit Windows. You do not need a 64-bit replacement simply because your version of Windows is 64-bit.
The correct file must match the game build and be located beside the executable that loads it. Architecture alone is not enough. A 32-bit DLL from another Renegade edition can still be the wrong file.

What not to do
Avoid these common but unsafe responses:
- Downloading
bandtest.dllfrom a random DLL website - Replacing the file with an unverified 64-bit copy
- Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64
- Running registry cleaners
- Using
regsvr32repeatedly - Disabling antivirus without checking the detection
- Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET without an error naming that component
- Mixing retail, EA App, Steam, and community-patch files
- Repairing one installation while launching another
A DLL download can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, use the wrong version, or fail to include the other files that the game needs.
FAQ
Is bandtest.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Westwood Studios BandTest and Command & Conquer: Renegade installations. It is not a standard Windows component.
Which game installed bandtest.dll?
The strongest association is Command & Conquer: Renegade. Do not assume that every Command & Conquer title or every Renegade edition uses the same build.
Can I download a replacement DLL?
Do not use an unverified DLL mirror. Repair or verify the game, reinstall it from the official EA App or Steam installation, or use legitimate original media.
Why does Renegade say the entry point is missing?
The executable and DLL are probably incompatible, often after a patch, Core Patch, mod, or failed update. Restore the complete base installation, then apply compatible updates one at a time.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not solely for this error. Install a runtime only when the message specifically names a Microsoft runtime or DirectX component.
Should I run SFC?
Only when broader Windows corruption is suspected. SFC does not normally restore a third-party Renegade DLL.
Why did repair remove my mod?
EA or Steam repair can replace unofficial or modified files. Back up custom files first, then reinstall compatible mods after confirming the clean game works.
